I have a story for you all.

So this morning my dad was out of the house, and so was everyone else. So I was alone, and I turned on the living room TV to watch YouTube on the comfy couch downstairs. Most of my playlist was games I haven’t watched Mark and Jack play yet, DDLC and Joy Of Creation, stuff like that. 

But then I added Jack’s segment on the Late Late Show broadcast to my queue because I felt like seeing it again.

So that video started around the time my dad came home from the store. I paused it so I could help bring in groceries, and once we were done my dad was like:

“What are you watching? You can keep going if you want.”

So I push play…and he sits down to watch it with me. He wasn’t just sitting in the same room, he was watching it. He knows I watch @therealjacksepticeye and he knows I was excited about his interview. So he sat down and watched, knowing what it was. And you know what he did?

My dad paused it three times to tell me why he agreed with things that Jack was saying.

The fact that Jack avoided the subject of money? Approval. Because my dad works in a field where he works with/for the wealthy, both those who are humble about it and those who aren’t. He has seen the difference between those who have good money but you would never know it because they don’t act “rich”, and those who brag about it and flaunt it and make it obvious how rich they are. And my dad, he gestures to Jack on the TV screen, and he goes:

“This guy is doing it right.”

The part where Jack was talking about how he interacts with fans? My dad started talking about staying down to earth. That celebrities should do what Jack is doing, that we need more of that. I mean, the first thing he said when he saw Jack on screen and I told him who it was, he said “This is so funny, I’ve seen you watch his stuff before. But here, he just looks like a normal guy.” Because that’s what he is.

And the part where Jack brought the girl on stage and told her to:

“Keep it in the day.”

…my father, he opened up his notes on his phone. This is where he keeps important quotes he looks at on a daily basis. Quotes that inspire him, quotes that keep him thinking positively. Things like “Glass half empty or glass half full, it doesn’t matter which way you look at. What matters is how you chose to fill that glass.”

So he opens that note. He types the quote in, then tells me to type in Jack’s real name and his YouTube name under the quote. Then after it’s all over…

…he tells me that he’s figured it out.

Now, my father, he listens to this Christian preacher on the radio sometimes when he needs inspiration or uplifting words, this guy named Joel Olsteen. Because I come from a rather open minded Christian family, and while I’m not as religious as my parents, that’s where my dad finds his peace and his hope. And my dad, he looks at me and says the most amazing thing I’ve ever heard come out of his mouth.

“This guy, Jack. He’s your version of Joel Olsteen, isn’t he? He’s your inspiration and your motivator. He seems like a really decent guy.”

I swear I almost cried. It’s not many words and it might seem insignificant but…knowing that my dad understands the main reason I watch Jack, and knowing he approves of my YouTube hobby….it means so much. See, it’s hard to get him to understand the nerdy half of my life, the part of my life I spend being a part of internet communities. My mom gets it because she’s pretty nerdy too, but my dad is….a little more distant from it.

So getting that moment of connection….that drawing of a parallel that meant he understood….it means so, so much to me.
