Kaz Brekker is such an anomaly. Is he a well-written, well-rounded character? Yes. Did he learn his lesson in the end? No. Did he become either better or worse? No. Did he grow as a person? You could say that. Do we have even a remote understanding what he will do next? Absolutely not.

thinking about this moment again:

particularly in regards to this conversation:

thinking about inej, who is actively dying, asking kaz for an apology. inej, whose native tongue leaves no room for triviality here. this isn’t “you were mean to me and you need to make nice,” it’s so much deeper.

this is “promise me you won’t treat me like a piece in your chess game again. promise me you won’t keep acting like i’m replaceable. promise me i’m not just another one of your investments.”

this is the first time we see inej holding kaz accountable, the first time we see her ask him to be more, to do better. this is the precursor to the “without armor” conversation. and i think it’s fitting that we never hear whether or not kaz did apologize. because at this point, i don’t think he’s ready to give inej what she’s really asking for here, and in a way, it’s best that she doesn’t hear him say the words. he’s not ready to mean them yet.

i keep seeing the whole “they hard launched already why are you all hyped” thing going on for some people and i have to say they like kinda haven’t tho?? like they have but they also like haven’t. there’s a lot of vagueness around they way they both talk and while it’s painfully obvious to literally anyone with eyes everything they’ve said so far can still be explained away if you really try hard enough.

a proper hard launch is literally them going “hey we’re dating” but all we have is that they’re 1000 year old turtles or whatever shit dan feels like saying

He subtly sassed Haskell all the time, but Haskell never picked up on it

He snarled at people like a dog

When in prison he would be really violent at the beginning to show inmates that they shouldn't mess with him (because he was 10 the first few times and suffering from malnutrition)

He smashed people over the heads with bottles

He put on disguises to try and sneak back into gambling dens he had been banned from

He would try make people feel sorry for him and then robbed them blind

He didn't talk a lot and just stared creepily

kaz brekker is the best book boyfriend to ever be written. like he wants inej to stay with him but he also wants her to be happy, so he buys her a boat so that she can leave him, knowing that it will make her happy. like you just can't beat that.
