Prevent Search Engine Indexing Your WordPress Site Or At Least Discourage Indexing | WP Learning Lab
There’s only one reason you would want to discourage indexing of your website and that is because it’s in development.
If you have content that you want to keep private, simply discouraging search engines from finding it won’t do. For that sort of content you’ll want to put it behind a login.
Another common myth is that if you don’t generate a sitemap for your website then it won’t be indexed.
Not so.
I’ve acquired well over 200 domain names over the past few years and I can tell you when I check the logs, search engines are there almost immediately looking for content to index.
It’s true.
Domain name registrars notify search engines a domain name has been bought and that a website should be there soon. So the search engines come sniffing.
Again, the only reason to discourage search engines from indexing your is during development.
This does not include major website updates. Once your site goes live you could turn on maintenance mode to roll out updates, but never discourage indexing for updates.
If you go the Reading Settings you will find the last option on that page is Search Engine Visibility. If you check the box beside that option and click save you will be discouraging the indexing of your site.
The reason I say discourage is because it’s up to search engines to honor your request.
It’s true.
Even though you tell them you don’t want your site indexed sometimes it finds its way into the index.
The only true way to block search engines is the require a login to access the site.

How To Check The Google Search Results For Potential WordPress SEO Issues | WP Learning Lab
A lot of SEO is running SEO campaigns, analyzing results and figuring out why something went well so you can repeat it or troubleshooting why it didn’t work so you don’t repeat it.
But, before you even run an SEO campaign, you have to make sure your site is set up properly.
Over the years many clients have come to us for help with their SEO. Often we find that one or more things on their WordPress site aren’t done right and are hurting their SEO.
One of the ways to troubleshoot issues like this is Google Search Results or Google Search Results Pages (SERPs for short).
All you have to do is go to Google and type in site: (that’s the word site and then a colon) followed by your domain name with out any spaces.
For examples, searching for my domain I would type in site:wplearninglab.com.
This will show all of the pages on my domain that Google has in the index.
The pages Google returns for you is ALL the pages they have indexed, not just the ones that are ranking well.
What you are looking for is large deviations in the number of pages in the index from what you would expect.
For example, if you know your site has a combined 100 posts and pages but Google is only showing 15 of them in the index, there’s something wrong.
On the other hand, if you know your site has a combined 100 posts and pages, but there are thousands of pages from you site in the index you also have a problem.
In regards to how many pages Google should have indexed for you, a good rule of thumb is 60-90% of the posts and pages you have. So if you have 100 posts and pages then 60 to 90 of them should be in the index.
Anything far outside that range points to a potential problem.
Having too few pages in the index implies that there is something going on that is preventing Google from indexing your site.
If you have too many pages then there is chance that you have a plugin that is generating large numbers of unwanted pages.
Both scenarios are harmful to your SEO.
I hope this information helps you! If you have any questions leave a comment below or ping me @WPLearningLab on Twitter.

Summary of this Tutorial:
The first one we’ll look at is the page builder by site origin.
This is one of the most popular page builder plugins, largely because it is free.
Site Origin if fairly easy to use and lets you add any widget you need.
There is also a history tool that lets you revert back to previous changes you had.
The next builder is the beaver builder which is a premium plugin and in our opinion is the best option on the market right now.
Beaver is very fast to use and comes with an on boarding tour to familiarize you with their interface quickly.
There is a live drag and drop interface where you get to see all you changes as you make them.
The next is Velocity page.
It’s also has a live preview and comes with several built in modules.
The next one is Themify builder.
If you already have a theme by Themeify then you already have this functionality, but if you are using a different WordPress theme, you can purchase the Themify builder plugin for 39.
Finally let’s look at Headway Themes.
This is one of the most beginner friendly drag and drop themes and it’s an actual theme as well.
It allows you to build any layout and design you want and comes with built in ready to use blocks that you can add to any page on your site.
Looking at the 5 drag and drop plugins and themes, beaver builder and velocity page are our top 2 choices if you don’t mind spending a little money to create the site you want.

Keyword Density Is Still Relevant For SEO – Find Out How To Easily Calculate It | WP Learning Lab
Keyword Density is one of the most abused aspects of SEO. Marketers used to add their keyword over and over on the page in order to help rank the page.
This is called keyword stuffing and it used to work REALLY well.
Google soon realized the manipulation and change their algorithm to penalize keyword stuffing instead of reward it.
That change was made many years ago, but some people are still advising keyword stuffing.
I advise keeping your keyword density below 4%. That means of all the words in your content less than 4% of those words are your keywords.
There are people who advise the other extreme and say you shouldn’t optimize for keywords at all and Google will still rank you. Which isn’t really true.
Within including your keyword Google and other search engines won’t know what you’re content is about. If it can’t determine the purpose of your content Google won’t be able to rank you for anything in its search results.
I advise you add your keyword or key phrase to: 1. The page title 2. The URL 3. The first paragraph 4. A heading (preferably an H2)
And throughout your content, but keeping the keyword density below 4%.
That’s all there is to it.
I hope this information helps you! If you have any questions leave a comment below or ping me @WPLearningLab on Twitter.

Summary of this Tutorial:
link cloaking allows you to make a link appear different when pointing to an affiliate.
There are a few plugins you can use for this.
First is ThirstyAffiliates and it’s what we use on WPBeginner.
You can add your affiliate link with a button, you can also add keywords and if those keywords are on the site, then ThirstyAffiliate will create a link from that automatically so you don’t have to always remember to do that yourself.
The next plugin is pretty link lite which lets you manage your affiliate links on your site. they also give you analytics for your links.
Third is easy affiliate links which lets you add and manage links from a single dashboard.
WP Wizard cloak is another one you can use. it provides url shortening and link cloaking.
Then there is links auto replacer, with this, you add the words and the link to use if those words are found on your site.
WooCommerce cloak affiliate links is for the ecommerce sites and build on WooCommerce platform.
And lastly we have affiliate link manager which cloaks links based on a keyword.

Why Contextual Links Matter For SEO | WP Learning Lab
A contextual link is a link that is within your article. It usually has anchor text instead of a plain URL.
These links can be used to interlink content on your website or link out to other websites.
As far as SEO goes, Google links to see you interlink to related content on your site and it likes to see you link to related authority sites.
You can add a nofollow tag these contextual links. There’s a big debate in SEO is about whether to use nofollow or not. Here’s the skinny on the debate.
For every page that Google encounters it calculates a Page Rank. The higher the Page Rank the more ranking power that page has.
If you can get a ‘follow’ link from a high PR page you can rank almost any page on your website on the first page very quickly. However, if that same link is set to ‘nofollow’ then it has very little effect on your rankings.
What happens is that using ‘follow’ shares your page’s Page Rank with the page you’re linking to. If you use ‘nofollow’ then no Page Rank is shared.
The debate is about which one is better: horde your Page Rank or share it.
Google wants it to the be shared, so they like to see all your links WITHOUT the nofollow attribute.
Also, the majority of websites have a Page Rank of zero, so they’re not sharing any Page Rank when they link out.
Which one you use is up to you, but at the moment I choose to use only ‘follow’ links. I may change my mind if the google algorithm changes.
I hope this information helps you! If you have any questions leave a comment below or ping me @WPLearningLab on Twitter.

Change WordPress Font-Size Using Theme Options or CSS | WP Learning Lab
Changing WordPress Font-size is done in the theme options panel or with CSS. Once you know where to make the changes in your theme it is easy to do.
As with a lot of things in WordPress, where you do things depends on the theme you’re using and the plugins you’re running.
First, always check to see if your theme has theme options. If it does then you should be able to find a typography tab to edit font sizes. Sometimes font sizes will be found in the general settings of the theme options.
The theme options will be found either under the Appearance menu in the left hand side admin menu or there will be special menu item that the them itself added.
If your theme doesn’t have theme options, then you’re next stop should be the customizer.
Some themes have a lot of WordPress Customizer support. Go to Appearance then Customizer to see if you can edit font sizes there.
If both of those are a no-go then you’re left with going to directly to the stylesheet to change font sizes.
This is method is great if you have some CSS knowledge.
To find your stylesheet go to Appearance then Editor. The stylesheet will be the first thing to appear in the editor. If, for some reason, it’s not there, then find the style.css file in the list of theme files on the right and click it to open it in the editor.
NOTE: You should be edit stylesheet of a child theme only. If you edit the parent theme stylesheet directly then your edits could be overwritten when you update the them. Here’s a tutorial on how to create a child theme if you need it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z8n1h-85SMQ
Now that you have the CSS stylesheet open in the editor you will need to find the font styles.
The easiest way to do this is go to your main site and find the fonts that you want to edit. If you’re using Google Chrome or Firefox right click on the text and choose the “inspector” or “inspect” from the context menu.
If you’re not using Google Chrome or Firefox then start using them.
In the inspector that opens at the bottom of the page you should see the text highlighted in the main area and the class of the element on the right.
You can type styles right into the element on the right hand side to quickly test to see how big you want the font to be.
This doesn’t save it permanently. What you see is only in your browser and as soon as you refresh the page you’ll lose it.
So, find the class for the text, find the right size and move that CSS rule in to the stylesheet for the child theme.
Sometimes you’ll have to fight with the existing CSS to make your font changes take effect. That’s where a command link !important comes in very handy.
If you type .h2 font-size:10px !important;. Having !important forces that style to take precedent over all others.
It’s a lazy way to code CSS, but unless you have time to find the conflicting styles, it’s a fast and easy trick.
I hope this information helps you! If you have any questions leave a comment below or ping me @WPLearningLab on Twitter.

Contact Form 7 File Upload Field Tutorial 📗 | Contact Form 7 Tutorials Part 10
youtube
Tutorial updated for 2017/2018: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-RtBrUCSkBk&t=151s&index=20&list=PLlgSvQqMfii5Q05RFNFaZhTbPomLfZssV
Contact Form 7 File Upload Field Tutorial 📗 | WP Learning Lab
The Contact Form 7 file upload feature is a great addition that a lot webmasters will find useful. There is one trick to setting it up that many people get wrong, this tutorial will cover it all.
Uploading files via the Contact Form 7 plugin is very useful for any companies that have clients send them design files (web designers, sign printers, architecture firms and so on). It can also be useful for real estate surveyors and even government agencies that ask for non-sensitive documents to be uploaded.
So it has a lot of potential uses and it’s really easy to set up.
This tutorial assumes you have to have a functional Contact Form 7 to add this functionality to. If you don’t yet, check out this tutorial to build your first contact form using Contact Form 7: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wy70WGCjMY4
Adding The Upload Feature
Click the spot in your form where you want the upload feature to be available. The click on the “File” button in the Contact Form 7 editor feature list above the editor box.
This open the file upload dialogue box where you fill in information about your upload.
1. You can choose to make the upload required. 2. You can set the name of the field to any string of characters you wish. I recommend you give it a descriptive name, not the default that CF7 will create for you. 3. You can (and should) set the file size limit. More on this in a minute. 4. You can (and should) set the file types. More on this in a minute too. 5. You can set an ID and class for that upload input which is option. You would do this if you want to custom style to input more easily using CSS.
Now that you know all the things you can set, let’s talk about two tricks you need to be aware of.
Setting File Size Limit (in bytes)
It is smart to set a file size limit to protect your server resources and to make sure that the email with the file attachment is sent. Too large of a file will mean that the email won’t make into your inbox.
The trick here is that you need to set the file size in bytes. These days we’re used to file sizes in the megabyte and gigabyte range, few people still talk about bytes. So you need a converter.
Simple go to Google and search for “bytes to megabytes converter”. The one I use in the video is this one: http://www.whatsabyte.com/P1/byteconverter.htm
Then enter the max file size you want into the megabyte field. I don’t recommend you go over 10 megabytes because many email servers won’t allow attachments larger than that.
If you need your clients to send you files larger than 10 megabytes then you’ll need to look into something like Dropbox, WeTransfer or Google Drive to send and receive those files.
After you’ve entered the megabyte size into the converter click the double arrow button below the field. That will show the equivalent values in bytes, kilobytes, gigabytes and terabytes.
Copy the value from the byte field and paste that into the File Size Limit box in the Contact Form 7 file upload dialogue box.
Setting Acceptable File Types
The next important field is choosing allowed file types. This is important so that people who want to do you harm can’t send executable files or hacks through the upload feature. Although, this may be rare, it does happen and protecting yourself is relatively easy.
In the acceptable file types field enter the file types you accept separated by a “pipe” character. Here’s an example for accepting various image file types:
jpg | jpeg | gif | png
The values you want to enter are the extensions of the files. So if you want to accept Microsoft Word files you would use
doc | docx
If you want to accept Excel files you would choose
xls | xlsx | csv
You get the idea.
Once you’ve set your file upload options click on Insert Tag and then save your form.
Now, the most important step. Test the file upload feature with file types you’ve added and the file size limit you’ve set.
Make sure to check that you always receive the emails that are being generated by the form.
