I’ve spent like hundreds and hundreds of hours building settlements in Fallout 4, and you’d think I’d be all about turning it into The Sims™️ 4 Nuclear Wasteland Expansion Pack and giving all the settlers names and little backstories.

But in my experience that starts out sincere, and then three named settlers later it’s like “this barkeep is named Handsome Chad, and he wears a tux. =] Isn’t he a cool ghoul!” but that turns into “here’s the doctor for Tenpines Bluff. She lives in a trailer full of materials for making drugs. She also wears Pastor’s Vestments. Her name is Father Macaroni. What’s her story? Who knows! Just go ahead and follow her to The Shed if you could, please.” or “this guy is named John Leghoulzamo, sure, ok, whatever.” Hold on post cancelled, this is fine actually.

You know what gets me about Hancock’s strongroom?

There’s not much actually in there.

Obviously there’s the odd assortment of randomly generated guns & ammo, plus the caps you get from Bobbi. that’s to be expected.

But Hancock practically says that’s not even where he keeps most of his caps anyway when he calls the 1000 caps he asks back for chump change.

The non-generated stuff is two fusion cores, two stealth boys….

But what’s mostly in there are some waters and what amounts to a random assortment of snack foods like Fancy Lads and Sugar bombs. Those are always there.

Right next to a sleeping bag that’s got a few wooden blocks next to it.

Conclusion?

We broke into Hancock’s hangover room that he goes to whenever he just wants some damn peace and quiet.

Wagies of the Wasteland

Welcome to Working The Wasteland with Sam. I am Sam. Sam I am. Welcome! (FO4)

Our first lesson is about vendors all over the Commonwealth and how YOU can exploit them to make your OWN Common-wealth! Let's go over the basic necessities you'll need to get this show on the road!

A home settlement

A vendor (traveling or otherwise; any will work!)

If you have a travelling vendor, you need to locate the vendors travel path. Hopefully you got one of the good ones who'll come around your settlement every once in a while, such as sanctuary, covenant, or any others. Now assuming you're not a big boss man and are simply a settler working for some random minuteman guy, you're gonna want to make sure you've got a good place set up where the head honcho won't try and steal (or destroy) everything you've worked so hard on! However, if you happen to be the head honcho of a settlement, please ignore this broadcast. We don't teach narcs.

Now once you've got your vendor information set, go ahead and find a nice spot to build up whatever you wanna make. You're going to have to scrounge up a few pieces of scrap (or steal them, those idiots never notice anyhow) and start your emporium! There are a few good options for getting started, such as Water, Mac and Cheese, and (provided your settlement has a Brahmin and you aren't afraid to get your hands dirty) Jet. I'll go over all three of these in a separate broadcast, but lets keep this one simple. Build a couple water pumps or make a couple things of Jet or whatever.

Once your vendor heads your way, go ahead and sell off all of the water or whatever else you've got to them, and take your caps. In the next broadcast, I'll teach you what you should do with those caps instead of purchasing food and guns.
