SUMMARY: May and Rubin shared a once-in-a-lifetime love—the kind of love that makes you feel as though you couldn’t live without the other person. It was the kind of all-consuming, soul-deep connection that everyone dreams of. Together, they were perfect, until Rubin’s brother passed away. With a father who was often drunk and angry, Rubin found himself without any family to turn to. Fearing he might become like his father, he pushed May away and ended their relationship.

Now, nearly a year later, Rubin is back in May’s life, but he’s torn. He doesn’t want to burden her, but he can’t shake the feeling that he can’t live without her. With no one else to turn to, he has to be wary of May’s boundaries while trying to get closer to her again. The only problem is, the closer he gets, the more likely he is to hurt her.

“ RUBIN SAT IN a worn hospital chair, his gaze fixed on his brother. Tears blurred his vision as he took in the sight of Brian, once so full of life, now reduced to this frail, almost lifeless form.

He glanced at his father, silently willing him to do something—anything. But Rubin knew better. This day had been looming over their heads for months, yet nothing could have prepared them for it.

When the doctor delivered the diagnosis, Rubin’s world had blurred. The only words that broke through the fog were “terminal” and “months or years.” They could give Brian a life-altering diagnosis, but not a clear timeline. The unfairness of it all made Rubin’s head spin.

He knew it wasn’t anyone’s fault—not the doctor’s, not Brian’s, not his own. But blaming the universe for this cruel joke was easier than accepting the truth.

Through all of Brian’s final months, Rubin hadn’t seen his father shed a single tear. The man’s face remained cold and detached, just as it was now. Rubin wondered if he’d ever show emotion—if even this would break through that icy exterior. But now, even as Brian lay dying, their father was the same distant, indifferent man.

NOTE— ok so it’s gonna be a little while before i start posting this series, as i want to finish writing the whole thing before putting any of it out. i just wanted to give a little taste of what’s to come cause i’m really excited and ive put a lot of work into it. that being said i still have a long way to go as far as finishing it goes and i’m really taking my time and allowing myself to write it as it comes to me as opposed to rushing to get it done.
