Arms are folded and her back is pressed to the wall of the elevator as it makes its ascent towards the parking garage. So many levels. So deep underground. It always kind of weirded Mizuki out- Iris was convinced that it was mole people that originally started the construction or something ridiculous like that. Well… it definitely took something to make this place so deep down! Just not. Mole people.

“They didn’t give you a loaner? What the heck! Well it shouldn’t take too long if they’re adding the stuff they added to my baby. Wait do you have a car or a bike? Doesn’t matter- shouldn’t be a problem for you to ride with me. I’ve got the cutest scooter you’ve ever seen.”

[Mizuki, it is not acceptable for two people to be riding the vespa at once. I would not recommend this decision.] ‘Oh it’ll be fiiiine. We’re only going a few blocks and it’s not like either of us would want to take a bus or taxi if we got another option! We got this. You should be supporting me.’ [You are fortunate Boss is currently occupied…] ‘Date would let me do it.’

“Aiba says we have to be careful. Which we will. So no racing, promise.” Ding! The elevator opens up and the pair step out, and man if that light cream blue doesn’t stand out against the rest of the vehicles gathered. As if the Adorabbit decal and bright yellow helmet weren’t eye-catching enough.

Hm, this elevator is taking a while. On previous occasions she was being first shown around by Boss or was on her way to get her eyeball replaced by Pewter, so her perception of time was a little wonky back then. Here is where it finally sinks into her how far underground ABIS actually is. How much taxpayer money went into just digging a hole that deep??

“Oh sure, I have a car. I drive a Mazda! I had a couple months between graduating and getting enlisted, so I had time to get my license before joining up here. What about you? Do you plan on getting yours?”

She follows Mizuki out of the elevator and over to her scooter. Immediately her eyes shimmer as she catches the decals on it.

“Oh wow! Adorabbit! I didn’t know you liked that line too! I, uh... I like Adorabear better, but... They’re cute, aren’t they!?” [Hardly appropriate for an officer’s vehicle though, considering she uses it for work.] ‘Oh, don’t be such a stick in the mud, Kindle!’

“Isn’t it a bad look for a law official to be drinking on a work night? We tend to work late hours with all of the cases we get, and it won’t do for our captain to be drunk at Marble when Mizuki needs to request a Psync.”

“Yeah, that’s me.” pause to look up and down at the young lady in front of him. “ … (almost taller than Mizuki) …–er, uh, morning. Welcome aboard,  Miss Iino. I hope you like it around here. True that we have …hmm…quite the eccentric fellows around but they all on the good side. I think.”

At the mention of eccentricities, Iino suddenly shuddered, thinking back to the time she attempted to Wink Psync Boss.

“Um... So I’ve noticed... Ha... Ha...”

[Don’t let Boss catch you saying that, Miko. She is all about office banter until she’s the one being made fun of.] ‘Well what about if she heard that then!?’

“But I have complete faith in their moral integrity! No corrupt evildoers would let me join their ranks, after all! I was in the Public Morals Committee back in high school, you know?”

With X-Ray scan, Iino glances at the trap door in the floor to her left. Her eyes narrow.

‘Kindle, Wink Psync him.’ [Understood.]

Iino holds her palm outwards before pressing it against her face, leveling her cybernetic eye between her thumb and the rest of her hand. Upon her request, Kindle executes the Wink Psync, broadcasting the scientist’s thoughts to her mind like a television.

‘Hey, doesn’t this Miko girl have really good assistant energy? Props for the enthusiasm. I kinda like this.’ [Mizuki, remember you are helping to train her as an agent, not to use her as your secretary. You do realize her diligence means that what you do is just as likely to be reported?] ‘Hey there were no plans on taking advantage of that. Just recognizing potential. I’m gonna be a proper teacher here. Not… that I wasn’t going to do it anyway. Of course.’ [Of course.]

A little extra spring in her step, a proper serious sheen painted over her features. Yeah they were pretty much the same age and in the same situation, but as a ‘senpai’ Mizuki could do better to put up a proper persona. She’s not the head boss around ABIS, so her usual casual demeanor wouldn’t cut it. Not that she’s ever able to manage all the time around Boss, come to think of it. This may be difficult for someone so used to working solo. For other reasons.

“Orchard Ginza? That’s just a few blocks away from here. Okay! So here’s what we’re gonna do. You and I are gonna ride over there and start talking to the crime scene investigators. Find out what they know and see if they have witnesses. We’ll work from there. You got a ride?” They were at the elevator at this point, Mizuki smacking the ‘up’ button a few times before turning to regard the other with crossed arms.

Iino steps inside the elevator, arms behind her back as she quietly hums, raising her eyebrow at Mizuki as she taps the up button more times than necessary. She raises her finger to speak up, but puts it back down and shakes her head instead.

[Have patience with those with different temperaments than you, Miko.] ‘Yes, I know. I already stopped myself.’

“I do have my own vehicle, but Pewter asked me to turn it into the tech department so they could make ‘modifications’ to it. Something about adding an AI interface? So... It’s unavailable for the time being. I’ve been having to take the train here until they’re finished with it.” [I’ve been checking in with Pewter regularly for updates. It should be ready after the weekend.] ‘Ok...’

“S-So it’s not too much trouble to ride with you, right? What do you have?”

[Both of them are interns at this time. If they both get into their heads that they’re full fledged agents it may prove to be an issue at a later time.]

Aiba responds privately to the other ai-ball before she relays the message to Mizuki, for what good it will do. Most advice tends to fall on deaf ears or get misconstrued in unfortunate ways. Date had rubbed off on the girl in some unfortunate ways. Whether it was a penchant for nonsensical ideas or other … well. Suffice to say that for all the effort Mizuki will not make for an easy partner if that undaunted grin means anything in the face of attempted temper.

“Yeah, now that’s the energy you should have. Or enthusiasm anyway. Lot of the officers don’t like it when you break into song and dance on a crime scene. Even humming can throw some of them off. Ptch.” A dismissive handwave. You sing Invincible Rainbow Arrow one time and it’s like you’re some high schooler out of your ele–hm. Anyway.

[It is not their fault that they lack culture and class.] Yeah, they could stand to lose some sticks from their asses. And maybe allow a boombox.

“So, Miko!” Attention is commanded as the two girls proudly make their way through ABIS headquarters. “Did you have the file for this one or do we gotta pull it off the network?”

Your first real case as an agent of ABIS! You should be excited, Iino! So why is it that Kindle has to force your enthusiasm for your job out of you? Do you still have second-guesses even though it’s far too late for that? You already had your left eye plucked after all. If you wanna back out now you better be ready to live the rest of your life with no depth perception. Iino’s confident smile wavered somewhat, as she swallowed her throat and trotted through the hallway after the senior officer.

“Um... Yes, ma’am! At 11:22 PM last night, a Mr. Kanji Furutani was shot and killed outside of a bar called, called um...” A small pause as she struggles to recite the information given, before Kindle throws her a line by bringing up the case file in her left eye.

“Orchard Ginza! Yeah, and then... who we assume to be the perpetrator stole his vehicle and fled into the streets as the staff inside called the police. They found the vehicle crashed into a high-mast lightpole on the highway with the driver nowhere to be found! So, uh... We’re trying to track down the vehicle thief and probable murderer... right?”

[Well done. You’re halfway to earning yourself a cookie from the break room vending machine.]
