Artha Elizabeth Marston, born 1901. Nicknamed Beth, she was conceived by accident at a time when no children should be born. Her first 6 years of life were defined by instability and constant trouble that her father could not help but find.

Breaking my heart

Sometimes I sit here and I reimagine Abigail and Jack riding back to Beecher's Hope and finding John dead. Abigail's reaction in RDR1 doesnt smash my heart enough, I guess and I just see her like. Collapsing into the dirt and just like, grabbing the blood soaked vest and pulling his upper body so she's half cradling his body in her arms while she wails.

Theres so much blood and Jack doesnt think it will ever wash out. It's gotten inside of him and all he wants to do is grab his Pa and shake him. Beg him to wake up, get up, Pa. He's terrified and feels so small, so young and not at all ready to face the world without John there to step between him and anything that so much as looks twice at him.

I think about the fact that Abiail had to clean John, dress him. See the bullet holes and maybe she realizes that he never fired once. If he had, he wouldnt be as riddled with bullets himself. She'd known it was a sacrifice, but seeing the grisly evidence of it drives that point home.

Jack has to lay John in the grave, but his Pa is so heavy and stiff. Jack wants to be sick, but he cant. Theres no room or space for weakness or kid stuff now. So he grabs his Pa by the shoulders - maybe he remembers being younger and when John seemd like a giant to him. A man who held up the sky with his bare hands? Jack pulls and grunts and can hardly shift him.

"I cant do it, sir. I cant, I'm not strong enough. How do I--what do I do, Pa?" Theres no answer, of course there isnt. All there is is blood-soaked soil and red beneath his fingertips that Jack will spend the rest of his life trying to scrub out.
