How Blogging Can Sharpen Your Writing Skills
Tumblr media
The best way to improve your writing skill is to write and write as often as you can. It is like the famous quote use to say, “Practice makes perfect”. You will get better if you keep doing what you are doing until your muscle memorizes it. I even do it myself. Oftentimes, people would see me type my paper in a different way than the original version.
There are a lot of activities an aspiring writer can put their writing skill to drive test. They could participate on some writing competitions, do some freelance jobs or better yet build your own blog. Personally, I would go for blogging since it is what I have been doing aside from writing novels and scriptwriting.
Why blogging you ask? With blogging, you are free to use any types of approach in writing. You can go freestyle like be emotional, nonsensical, angry or just plain conversational. There are a lot of topics you can tackle with blogging. You can go one niche at a time or go all out if you are feeling generous with ideas.
There are things good about blogging and I will list some of the best things you could ever get from blogging to improve your writing.
Creativity Boost
With all the freedom that you are getting from writing on your own blog, there is a big chance that your creativity will improve. As far as you are concern, it is your blog and there is no such thing as limit, restrictions or boundaries to what you want to write about. Your blog is going to be your domain so write with all you heart’s content.
You can write about the latest tech and gadgets available in the market right now. You can even write about national or worldwide politics, if that is what you are into. There are those about travel and food blogs, you can try those too. If you are into wildlife stuff and outdoor adventures, there will be a lot of subjects to choose from. Even matters of the heart like love stories and friendships can be your ground for trying out different styles and different point of views for your writing practices.
Choose to Write Everyday
Because blogging does not require you to write long and epic tales of topics about anything and everything under the sun, you can be active in a daily basis. You can write short articles about the things that you noticed this morning. You can try to talk about the latest news that you just heard from the radio or TV. It does not have to be a thousand to five thousand words. Some blogs are catered with posts that consist usually of around 300-800 words. That perhaps depends on the mood of the blogger. You just have to keep it interesting and offer a lot of useful insights that could be of interest to your readers.
Your Readers are Your Fans
Not to sound egotistic, but you could consider your readers as your fans. Well, I think basically they are your fan—though some consider their readers as friends. Those who give value to your thoughts and eagerly wait for every article you post could be of help with your motivation issues. Knowing that someone loves your ideas and waits for it is good enough reason to sit down and squeeze whatever ideas you have at the moment.
Instant Feedback
I read somewhere way back that a written piece cannot exist until it is being read by another person. I cannot recall the author of such quote but after reading that I started to realize that I should stop hiding all my written materials (at least those that are less personal and intimate, of course). That was when I got myself involved with writing for competitions and our school’s monthly publications.
In blogging, not only that you get to be published instantly, you get feedback and reactions at the same day too. From those reactions, you can learn a thing or two to the way how your work is affecting your readers. You can check out which ticks and which does not for your audiences. With it, you can start adjusting your style or improve the depth of your technique faster than any medium of writing out there.
Getting Paid
Blogging can be more than just a hobby; it can also be a source of your income too. Spending enough time and posting more quality content can invite readers that could potentially become subscribers that are willing to pay a couple of bucks just to read anything from you. If you happen to not know yet, a lot of bloggers of today earn full time with just their blogs. They even use their blog sites as a medium for selling their merchandise. Now that is what we call “marketing”.
Imagine such privilege; to do something you like and then get paid for it. That is what everybody calls a perfect job. A lot of people search for years and spend more years just to find something they want to do and then get compensated at the same time. There are even some that end up not finding it at all. That is why I made this article to help other aspiring writers to realize that by using their blogs as their training ground, they could also gain more than just a better skill but also a way to earn extra cash as well. That, of course depends on their priorities.
I am not saying that all of you young writers out there should go for blogging. If internet life is not accessible for you then I suppose you can try other stuff too. There are more medium out there for which you can improve your writing skill. It is just a matter of will and passion. Like the old saying goes, “If you want something, then do everything to get it”. I like to think that all my dreams are mine for the taking and that I am not about to settle for something that I am not contented with.
