Legally adult, mentally...is that Olaf singing in the background?
I'm Lena, and yesterday I came to realize that I wasn't ready to adult. Here's the story, my little cousin was playing outside and wanted to play with his water gun, but his parents weren't around so I was like "maybe we shouldn't without adult supervision". He stared at me dead in the eyes and I realized, I am 18, I’m the adult supervision. NO WAY.
One day you fall asleep on the couch and wake up on your bed (be true, we all experienced this magical thing at least once in our life), and the other day you need to find a job, leave your dear house to Have your own flat and you don't know how to deal with it. Mom, Dad, Love me. Please.
Funny fact, most of us used to play "mom&dad" in our childhood. Remember how we were dying to grow up and have our own life?
Serious talk, is there ONE school in the world that teach us how to drive a car and how to put some gas on it? I agree, numbers are still numbers, but a second degree equation won't help me to pay and first of all, understand my bills. The magical thing don't work this time, sorry. Are we supposed to know when we turn 18 or 21 that we need to change our tooth brush every 1-3 month? Our mattress every 7 years? (Bed is friendly, as long as it let you wake up in the middle of the da- it's not an adult thing ?!). Are we even supposed to survive this long alone in the wild adult life?
Interesting question: what shall we defined as being 'ready to adult’? Is it the birthday or the paycheck? I personally think that it's when you let your needs trumps your want. Or when you can embrace your limits. It takes maturity to know your own weakness. (Control yourself. Don't eat too much toast while grown up adults are around.). And finally and probably the most important one, you come to realize important things and forgive. You (yes mom) understand your parents for the first Time in your young life.
But then, take a step back. Keep some Space to grow up. I still need to watch Hannah Montana on my Olaf pajamas, be amazed on Christmas Eve, prank parents with my little cousins, and watch tutorials on YouTube to deal with my everyday Life. Just because I like, I want and I need to do it. Act childish, sometimes, helps to keep your feet on our dear earth.
