“The papers say that I’m some kind of sadist that enjoys taking men’s lives,” Frank said. “The truth is that I take no pleasure in it at all. I just do it because there’s trash and it’s not going to take itself out, if you know what I mean.”

badmusesdoitwell:
📰 – She nodded and wrote down everything he said, looking at him when he compared Nam and WWII. She frowned. “This war was as traumatizing for our youth, as far as I know.” She said softly, she didn’t like the idea of people diminishing what vets went through. Even vets themselves.
“You’re not the first veteran I meet, Frank. If I can be honest, VA’s psychologists should be trained for this. There should be resources to deal with PTSD and disabilities of any kind. But from what I’ve seen, they left you all hanging dry. They sent you to war, the least they could do is help you all recover in the best circumstances.”
Frank nodded. It was good to talk to someone who understood what it was like to come back and find that you were left high and dry. Most of the guys he had served with could say the same thing. Some of them had had it better than others, of course, but the story was always the same. When they needed help, it just wasn’t there.
“I don’t think people really understand what war does to a man’s mind,” he said after a long pause. “Unless someone has actually been there, they wouldn’t understand. There are guys that have written books about what happened to them in ‘Nam, but it all feels so second hand. That’s another thing that’s hard about coming back. Nobody gets it.”

agecfmiracles:
Carefully watching Frank’s face for his reaction, Amy barely restrains herself from letting a fist-pump fly. For a guy who thinks he looks friendly enough, he has a serious case of chronic bitch-face when no one’s speaking directly to him, and she makes it her personal mission to get that facade to crack. “I have my connections,” she smoothly replies. “Gotta keep a leg up on you or you’ll never hang out with me.”
A rare smile slowly crept across Frank’s face as he took a piece of capicola and chewed it slowly. When he was out there fighting his war, he sometimes forgot the little things that made life worth living - the smile of a child, the slightly tangy taste of salami that had been cured to perfection, the sound of a guitar playing some sad Neapolitant song.
“You’re good,” he said pointing at Amy. “If you keep not revealing your sources to me, you could become an operative for the CIA.”

What are some character qualities that have you continue writing your muses?
Munday Meme
// One of the things that I’ve learned after writing on this site for seven years is that I can’t write muses well who aren’t three dimensional. If a character is one note or extremely minor, it is extremely difficult for me to write them because it means that I would have to come up with information that might not always be accurate. On the other hand, I can’t write a character who is only a villain or only a good guy because that’s unrealistic. Even the best characters have done some awful things.
I suppose, a character’s humanity is probably the main reason why I keep coming back to ones like Jessica or Frank. They’re real people who are going through real things and trying to make sense of what happens around them. They might not be the most pleasant people you have ever met or even the nicest, but they’re just people who are trying to make it and that’s why I ultimately write them.

// If I were to make a show about Frank, it would be similar to The Sopranos and Ray Donovan. It would have that same gritty aesthetic, but it would also have some of the cultural and religious background that makes Frank who he is.

// Frank is a huge news junkie. He reads all of the New York papers every day as well as some of the major West Coast ones as well. He also has CNN and one of the local stations on in the background for breaking news, but they’re on mute so that he can concentrate on other things that are going on.

“FRAAANK,” he draws out, smirk stretching across his mouth. “I’ll remember that.”
Lamar is relentless with his speed; he’d been somewhat of a getaway driver in his youth and only punched it now and then as of late. His current job was much more managerial, nothing prestigious yet but none the less a step above bouncer or store clerk.
They aren’t far off from their destination when a flurry of flashing lights catch his eye. The cops. “Morris,” he answers, finally. “Lamar Morris, but you can just call me Morris. Everyone else does…I don’t suppose you’re gonna want me to pull over?”
“Please to meet you, Lamar,” Frank replied with a tight smile.
The sound of the sirens was nothing new. At the speed they were going, it was something of an inevitability. However, Frank had always had a good relationship with them. He supposed that the cops in Los Angeles were any different than those in New York.
“Yeah, pull over,” he said. “Let me do the talking, all right?”

// Over the years, there have been many movies and TV series that have been made about The Punisher. Frank has seen quite a few of them. He always finds something to criticize. Most of the time, it’s how none of the numb skulls in Hollywood seem to get the skull or the vest right. Some of them make the skull too big and others make it too pale, so that the bad guys can’t even see the thing.
He doesn’t have any criticisms for the guys who play him. For the most part, they’re whoever is big in action movies at the time. Some of them look like him and others don’t. Most of The Punishers that he’s seen on the screen can’t even be bothered to have a proper South Brooklyn accent, which isn’t something that he cares about.
Of course, the action sequences are probably his favorite parts of the movies, although many of them are extremely unrealistic. For example, they are far more chaotic than they are in reality and the methods Frank uses to kill people are much more extreme than anything he’s ever come up with. However, it doesn’t really matter to him in the end. If it sells tickets and makes money, he doesn’t care.
Frank has a collection of Punisher films that he’s liked over the years and he watches them sometimes when he wants a good laugh, but that’s really about it.

// Frank has a system when it comes to killing members of crime families. Usually, he starts at the bottom with the soldiers and the associates. After that, he works his way to the captains and the capos. Finally, he assassinates the underbosses, the consigliere, and the boss himself.
The system doesn’t always work like clockwork. If a boss sends out an entire crew after The Punisher, Frank has to kill that crew. If he somehow manages to assassinate a boss, he has to do the whole thing backwards to take care of the other members of the family unless they’re homicidal enough to kill each other themselves.
Frank’s system requires time in order for it to work and that’s a luxury that he doesn’t always have. Sometimes, it might be weeks, months, or years before he goes back and continues going up the chain of command. There have also been rare instances where enough guys have been assassinated that the family dissolves itself and they never bother him again.

You have a right to come out of trauma uglier and meaner and angrier and less forgiving. And being a “bad survivor” does not impinge upon your validity as a survivor or how deserving you are of care, healing and recovery. Grow claws and fangs, hate the people who hurt you, hold on to your grudges ‘til your grave, never forgive and never forget if that’s what you need. And don’t let anyone judge or shame you for what gives you that scrap of safety, or security, or healing, that the cruelty of others had denied you.
