well, I was…very wrong lmao but episode 6 was a banger!
thoughts on pomni before episode 6 drops
I’ve seen a good number of people get understandably confused about pomni’s chaotic behavior in the trailer for episode 6. it’s reminiscent of evil pomni, her anti-personality, which raises some questions about how she gets to this point.

I’ve seen the claim pop up that it’s not uncharacteristic of pomni to be this way because she sought out “mild thrills”, like exploring abandoned buildings. I agree that it’s not uncharacteristic, but the problem with this argument is that pomni specifies mild thrills, which suggests that high-stakes activities aren’t really her jam. I mean, you’re not going to get a lot of action while exploring an abandoned building. sure, it might be a bit eerie, which can create tension, but you ultimately have control over where your curiosity takes you. it’s important to remember that pomni was trying to fight off her boredom more than anything else.
pomni has had a pretty rough introduction to the circus, with her first exposure to one of caine’s adventures being interrupted by kaufmo’s abstraction. so, with this and her past in mind, it makes sense that pomni has a preference for the lighter adventures, which she voices.

what’s interesting to me is how jax is the complete opposite. he’s always been a fan of taking adventures to the extreme, and he says as much to pomni. I think their reactions to being fast food workers in episode 4 highlight their different approaches pretty well.

jax decides he’s had enough of this and abandons his post early. he doesn’t care about his “job” because he doesn’t take it seriously. he just wants to get out of there.

pomni, on the other hand, kindly offers to close up so that gangle can leave. she doesn’t mind being the last one there to finish her “job”, which she treats as real for the sake of the adventure.

she says in episode 5 that she liked having a down-to-earth activity, so the pattern is cemented by this point.
I don’t necessarily have an answer for why pomni’s chaotic side is revealed in episode 6, but there are a few hints in the trailer that give us an idea of how jax pulls it out of her.

we see pomni fumbling with the gun, presumably because jax threw it at her and told her she needs to practice her aim if “team bad guys” (a name I’m sure jax chose) wants to win. she’s most likely apprehensive due to her preference for the mundane adventures.

jax is persistent, and demonstrates for her in the hallway.

I don’t know why the skeleton is there lol, but these frames seem to depict their shooting lesson.

pomni eventually gets the hang of things, and her confidence spikes—which makes her more comfortable with the high-stakes adventure, and therefore her role on “team bad guys.” jax is unabashedly himself, and I think that rubs off onto pomni. if they’re developing a friendship, and their name designates them as the antagonistic duo, then…why not have a little fun? unclench and let loose? try something new? expand her thrill seeking?
she finds jax’s antics amusing despite reminding him earlier in episode 5 that he threw her out of a moving truck, so what we see in the trailer isn’t an unbelievable development for her.

I’m excited to see where pomni’s character goes in episode 6. her investment in an adventure involving guns seems to go against everything that’s been previously established about her feelings for them, so her character will be fleshed out even more! I could’ve made some wrong assumptions, but this is what I’ve gathered so far.

do you guys ever think about how fucked up it is that generational trauma has caused so much tragedy in the fey family and this crescendos with none other than the master herself getting skewered by the founder's statue. you guys ever think about that

I feel like no one takes about these tragic sisters man. I feel like both mimi and iris have to deal with looking like their dead sisters for the rest if their lives and absolutely no one talks about it

i gotta say i really do love a character who is both profoundly haunted by guilt over their past actions to the point of considering themself irredeemable and deserving of punishment for them and at the same time is completely incognisant of some of the worst things they've done or just considers them nbd, especially when they can't even comprehend why theyve drawn the lines the way theyve done so.

arrrrrggggg I have an additional thought
edgeworth’s soft spot for the steel samurai offers a pretty compelling look into his psyche. when he was a child, he dreamed about following in his father’s footsteps and defending those who couldn’t defend themselves. his zeal was powered by an ardent conviction that it was his duty to fight injustice. obviously, we all know what happened next. gregory was murdered, and his entire worldview plummeted into cynicism. I find his attachment to the steel samurai in spite of this disillusionment to be really fascinating, because it’s a vestige of his childhood idealism. edgeworth watched the steel samurai, warrior of neo old tokyo, serve as a figure of justice in his fictional society. edgeworth’s a warrior too, though who he pointed his proverbial sword at changed over the course of his arc.
which brings me to my next point. it’s very personal, but to put it bluntly, I actually relate to edgeworth’s particular grief and trauma. I’ve experienced witnessing my dad pass away. so I understand where this attachment stems from on a very intimate level. you can’t return to the person you were before going through such a tremendous loss, but it’s cathartic to find a piece of media aimed at a younger audience because it transports you back to that sense of comfort and safety when your dad was still alive. children’s shows are like a blanket for my feelings. even though he had severely lost himself, I think the steel samurai plays a significant role in shaping edgeworth’s character, even if it’s subtle.
the trilogy doesn’t explore edgeworth’s steel samurai interest much, but takumi did cite suekane’s comic about edgeworth loving the show as the catalyst to a shift in his writing. after all, his “perfect image started to crumble down” once takumi realized that giving edgeworth weaknesses was the way to go. besides him openly admitting to powers that he’s a fan, the steel samurai figure in edgeworth’s office gives you enough to fill-in-the-blanks on your own.
so, with all this said, I feel represented by edgeworth’s love for the steel samurai, even if it’s simply a quirk of his. I just don’t want it to blunt the sharpness of his character by making it all cutesy either lol.
my opinion on edgeworth’s steel samurai interest has actually shifted over the years. where I stand now is that even though it’s one of my favorite traits of his to explore (I’m the ceo of powersworth because of it), it’s NOT because his fanboyism means he’s this dorky, nerdy loser. those kind of labels undersell what an imposing presence he is on the regular. it dulls his edge, especially considering the sword motif embedded in his character. I’d say that his enjoyment of the steel samurai is simply a unique quirk to me. it doesn’t dictate his personality, or somehow make him lame. enjoying a children’s show is on brand for him in the same way that listening to trot over classical music is. it’s the kind of trivia that fleshes him out and avoids archetypal characterization. I enjoy the idiosyncratic nature of edgeworth’s character, but that doesn’t mean I have to soften his bite.

#💬#I know some of my most popular posts are about edgeworth being a fanboy#but I also don’t want to reduce him to that#I’m being deadass my perspective on powersworth hardly even features steel samurai#it’s more of an entry point#it’s still very important! but it’s not why I’m invested in their relationship
