We want to appear only in the flesh, which leads us to value and enhance at the maximum, by any means necessary, face-to-face meetings, physical participation, and the sharing of a place. Not just some generic “space”: a place, with its history, meaning, emotional significance, and importance to people. If someone recognizes us on the street, it is not because they’ve seen us in effigy through electronic mediation; it means they’ve shared one of those concrete and tangible moments with us, and they did so with their body alongside other bodies.»

To Call Genocide a Genocide

We were editing this article when, on June 13, the Israeli armed forces launched Operation ‘Rising Lion,’ striking numerous targets in Iranian territory. 

The escalation in Western Asia – ‘Middle East,’ after all, is a Eurocentric expression of colonial origin – and the direct confrontation between the Likud regime and that of the Ayatollahs, along with the IDF’s destruction of Gaza’s last Internet connection, have temporarily overshadowed the ongoing genocide in the Strip, but the situation remains as described by Girolamo De Michele. 

The latest developments not only do not undermine the analyses and reflections that follow, but strengthen them.

«Fiume o morte!» In Igor Bezinović’s extraordinary film, the decolonizing tale of an invaded city

Fiume o morte! [Rijeka or Death!] by Igor Bezinović, fresh winner of the Rotterdam Film Festival, is an extra-ordinary work in every respect. The film reconstructs the so-called «Impresa di Fiume» [Rijeka Enterprise] of 1919-1920, at long last from a non-Italocentric perspective, surprisingly enacting the talking back of anticolonial and decolonial literature: the reversal of the point of view, the counter-narrative. Here such a narrative is entrusted to the memories –family, archival, urban, architectural memories– of the city itself, the Fiume/Rijeka that was then invaded. Gabriele D’Annunzio and his legionnaires acted in advance of Italian imperialism in the Balkans, they were its spearheads. The blitz was intended to make up for the so-called “mutilated victory” in the First World War. “Mutilated,” because at the Paris negotiations the Kingdom of Italy had failed to get all the former Austro-Hungarian lands it was aiming for. Missing from the list were Fiume and Quarnaro (or Carnaro, as it used to be called), as well as the much-coveted Dalmatia. Since the 1990s it has been in vogue to reevaluate the occupation of Fiume “from the left” or in a “libertarian” sense. In the timely review we publish today, the Nicoletta Bourbaki collective remarks on the unfoundedness and narrow italocentrism of such interpretations. Ignorance of non-Italian sources is one with indifference to the Croatian-, Hungarian-, German-, and even Italian-speaking inhabitants of Fiume/Rijeka who were opposed to annexation. They really do not come to mind, they are subjectivities excluded a priori, tacitly declared non-existent. What they experienced and suffered does not matter. What remains out of the picture is the imperialist and especially racist aspect of that invasion.

La República Libre de Venaus

«Desde hace más de treinta años, la comunidad del Valle de Susa, entre Turín y la frontera suroriental francesa, lucha contra un megaproyecto que prevé la construcción de una línea ferroviaria de alta velocidad (TAV) entre la capital piamontesa y Lyon. Una lucha desde abajo y multiforme que ha conseguido frenar las inútiles y dañinas obras con las que se pretende excavar un largo túnel bajo la montaña, así como construir una serie de grandes infraestructuras en el valle. La respuesta del Estado italiano ante esa oposición —con leves variaciones entre los muchos gobiernos que han pasado a lo largo de los años— ha consistido en una creciente militarización del valle, junto con un ensañamiento judicial sin precedentes contra una colectividad que, a día de hoy, continúa defendiendo el territorio valsusino.

En el otoño de 2016, la editorial Einaudi publicaba el libro Un viaje que no prometemos breve. Veinticinco años de lucha No TAV de Wu Ming 1 (inédito en castellano). En este "objeto narrativo no identificado", el autor realiza un auténtico viaje al interior de una comunidad en lucha que resiste ahora y siempre al invasor. Traducimos hoy una serie de fragmentos del libro sobre la historia de la República Libre de Venaus, uno de los puntos álgidos del movimiento No TAV que, en 2005, consiguió —aun sin obtener una victoria definitiva— torcerle el brazo al poder. No lo hacemos con ánimo nostálgico, sino para recordar hasta dónde puede llegar la potencia colectiva cuando se trata de defender el territorio y la vida comunes.»

Dans une interview il évoque la nécessité de réintroduire de l’« énergie masculine » dans des réseaux sociaux menacés d’ « émasculation ». To the best of our knowledge Paolo Demuru, an Italian semiologist teaching at Universidade McKenzie, Brazil, is the first academic (absit iniuria!) to take up our suggestion about replacing «conspiracy theories» with «conspiracy fantasies». Apparently in his newly released book Políticas do Encanto: Extrema Direita e Fantasias de Conspiração (Elefante) Demuru adopts several concepts from Wu Ming 1's La Q di Qomplotto. We'll certainly read it. Demuru was recently interviewed by BBC News Brazil. Here:

Ces ufologues de tous les camps politiques cherchant à percer le mystère de la multiplication des objets volant non identifiables dans le contexte historique du rapt d’Aldo Moro (Ancien président du conseil des ministres en Italie) ? À quoi bon nous demander si les extraterrestres sont plutôt communistes ou capitalistes, ou encore toute autre chose, de furtif, d’indiscernable, de non-identifiable ? Noticias de Francia, México, Cataluña y Francia de nuevo: Lo invisibile en todas partes y Ufo 78, o mejor dicho: ¡Ovni 78, como debe ser!

Hoy se publica en Métailié L’invisible partout, la edición francesa de nuestro L’invisibile ovunque (2015), traducida por Serge Quadruppani.

Para nuestra novela-en-cuatro-relatos, que dedicamos al centenario de la Gran Guerra, esta es la tercera traducción. En 2017 fue publicada en catalán por Ediciones Godall, bajo el título L’invisible arreu, con traducción de Oriol Fuster Cabrera. Hace unos meses salió la edición mexicana -distribuida en la mayor parte de la América hispanohablante- Lo invisible en todas partes, para tipos del FCE, en la traducción de Federico Mastrogiovanni. Quien, junto al periodista Andrés Ruiz, habla del libro en este episodio del podcast “La autentica banda librera”. En los dos últimos años, el FCE ha publicado otros dos libros de nuestro taller, Stella del mattino y Altai.

También en Francia, el 17 de mayo llegará a las librerías Ovni 78, la edición transalpina de nuestra novela Ufo 78 (2022), también traducida por Serge Quadruppani, publicada por Libertalia.

Mientras tanto, ha salido la edición en catalán, publicada por Manifest y titulada también Ovni 78. Traducción de Pau Vidal.

El cambio de título no es sorprendente: Italia es el único país de habla romance donde -aunque se utiliza la expresión “oggetto volante non identificato”, que daría el acrónimo OVNI- se adopta el acrónimo inglés UFO.

Estas nuevas ediciones extranjeras de Ufo 78 se unen a las ya publicadas, a saber, la alemana, editada por Assoziation A, y la griega, publicada por Οι Εκδόσεις των Συναδέλφων. Ambas editoriales tienen ahora varios de nuestros títulos en su catálogo: Assoziation A ha publicado siete, Οι Εκδόσεις των Συναδέλφων cinco.
