women’s
while the flapper movement is most closely connected with fashion from the ‘20s, tons of other clothing styles were equally as popular during the decade. despite the variety of clothing, women’s fashion in the ‘20s broke free of the physical & social constraints.

conservative workouts

bobbed hairstyles
an overall boyish ‘garçon’ look
these fashion trends provided freedom of movement & characterized the free-spirited, modernist era of the ‘20s & the jazz age while women gained independence.

just like the women of the time, men began to gain a laid back look & flashier wardrobe.

yet some men didn’t like the more casual look & went for a more conservative attire.

the boyish look of the 20s quickly became soft & graceful for the 30s.

men’s fashion had no remarkable change during the turn of the decade, besides suits being tailored for the illusion of a larger torso. many men being put out of work during the depression were unable to afford suits, wore more traditional & nondescript work clothes

women’s
WWII had placed new restrictions on clothing & production. clothing became influenced after the utility clothes that were produced during war rationing.

“do it yourself” home fashion

after WWII a “new look” began to replace the utility fashion. this new style embraced femininity like in the early ’30s.

teen girls wore sweaters, knee-length skirts & ankle socks. these trends continued into the 1950s.
men’s
WWII caused significant changes in men’s suits, the shape had little change yet items were removed to save materials.
hair became longer & greased back
teen boys wore zoot suits, being baggy cut pants & wide shoulders. they also wore high waisted pants, penny loafers & collared shirts.
