Summary: Maomao has known from a young age that her life doesn't belong solely to her. As a lowly servant, she could have been executed for the slightest misstep and as a courtesan, her very body was quite literally owned by the Verdigris House. But now, as the eldest daughter of the noble La clan, the petty freedoms afforded to her are dwindling before her eyes. When the Moon Prince finally takes a Princess Consort shortly after returning from the Western Capital, the courts are ready to devour her alive. Rumors swirl around the elusive La princess; rumors laced with jealousy, that deadliest of poisons. Kan Luozhi hardly stands a chance. It doesn't help that she wants nothing to do with any of it – not the prince, not the crown, and certainly not her own uncertain feelings – which are slowly becoming harder for her to ignore.

Or The Moon Prince finds a stray cat in a wild patch of mushrooms on his way back from his office late at night and they are both less than pleased with each other’s sleeping schedules.

Summary: Maybe it was the shock, or maybe because she was already numb to it, but her hands were steady as she brushed the last stroke of the last word she’d ever write, and stamped her and Jinshi’s insignia at the bottom. She looked back at him, her husband, who had lost… so much, in the past few days. He looked tired.
