Rosa Bonheur was a French animal painter who was born in 1822 and deceased in 1899. While young she would visit stockyards and butcher shops to examine the anatomy of animals, a common training for male artists but forbidden for women. She attained permission from the police to wear trousers during her visits, arguing that it was more practical.
Rosa remained unmarried during her life, living as an openly queer woman and having long-lasting relationships with other women artists. She wore a short haircut and smoked cigarettes but maintained traditional femininity in photographs and public spaces. Her successful career granted her economical independence, several exhibitions, awards and praise from the press and noble society.
