i’m thinking about torturing angels today. but not in a pulling their feathers out of their wings kind of way, not choking them with their halos or beating them bloody.

when i was little, i thought saints and martyrs became angels. it didn’t click for me until a few years in catholic school that angels were an entirely different species of beings. and while i know that’s the canonical view, sometimes i still like to think that people can become angels.

because when you think about it like that, torturing angels becomes something different. because people who could become angels are of course, your saints and martyrs, who are frequently one in the same. and the thing about saints is their martyrdom and sacrifice.

torturing someone who has practice in pain and suffering and sacrifice doesn’t work the same way, because they can make it noble. they can make it purposeful and specific, and there’s a solace in that kind of sacrifice.

and torturing an angel would have to be something there’s no sacrifice in. you have to take that nobility away and give them nothing to revel in except for the knowledge that you’re doing this to them simply for fun.

which is why the torture isn’t pain, of course. it’s forced pleasure. forced acknowledgement of their body for play and sensuality and meaningless pleasure.

it’s not plucking their feathers or shattering their wings. it’s not broken halos digging into the sides of their throats until the skin tears and bleeds.

it’s stroking their wings, licking the bony ridge where it connects to their skin. it’s the halo so gently wrapped around their throats like a security blanket, a leash tethering them to you not as a master, but as an equal. as a choice that was never really there.

it’s the halo bent and dented beneath your hands before being so lovingly placed back upon their head, a clear declaration of depravity, of disrespect, not your disrespect of them of course, but their own disrespect of their status and position and expectations.

the torture of angels revolves around the sinking corruption into a full connection between their brains and their bodies. it’s the forced understanding that they can be made human, reduced to sweet whining tears of pleasure, just like any mortal.

the torture of angels means the slow, intentional removal of all that haughtiness, the idea that they’re above such things.

and you might think the way to break them is simple degradation, humiliation so vast that it breaks them into pieces. but that’s not it. because that too, can be rationalized as a suffering that they’re simply enduring.

so you have to keep them so sweetly basking in physical pleasure, the kind of pleasure they always thought the other humans were vile for seeking, the kind of pleasure that they disregarded in their mortal lives in favor of their morals and their sainthood.

you have to keep them lost in pleasure they never understood and never meant to feel, the kind of sensuality they viewed as hedonistic and distracting and unnecessary.

and then?

torturing angels is about making them feel it while telling them about their disgrace, about the way they fall for you so easily, about the fact that you’ve only ever been the one who really knew how to cause them irreparable damage.

the way to break an angel is to make sure they know that you know just how much they love their fall, and make them live in that shame and that pleasure, whining under your hands while you tell them, “that’s it, angel. that’s what your body was built for. for feeling exactly this, the agony of shame and the unrelenting knowledge that you’re loving every single moment. and you know what, my sweet angel? i’ll never, ever let you forget what you’ve given up just to let me make you feel like this.”
