Please don’t put anything too political on your back patches— especially about your own marginalized experiences.

This has been a long standing rule in punk communities, passed down for generations. People do get jumped and experience violence as a result of this. You can’t see who is behind you, you can’t tell if they’re far right, and you can’t prepare yourself for sudden violence from behind.

So many people are new to the scene, introduced via social media, and don’t know the weight of walking with something on your back (literally and metaphorically) that immediately outs you as marginalized. If you’re able to defend yourself, or out with friends who can watch your back, by all means go for it and wear whatever you want on your back patches but if you walk alone at all ever, please be safe.

Also this is why punks wear spikes and studs on our shoulders especially. Makes it harder for someone to grab you and works as self defense (but also never wear spikes at a small show or if you plan to mosh— people can get hurt!).

i feel like the disabled community hears a lot from abled people about how we must all be so sad and we need a cure, so we reversed that and said no, we actually are all very happy with our disabilities and no one wishes they were abled. when often, most of us lie in the middle, and our opinion changes as we do. so heres your reminder youre allowed to be in the middle. its your body, and your life. you get to dictate how you feel about it

id say this is a common thing in EVERY marginalized community! ive at least noticed it in every community ive been in. it causes the notion there are only two opposing ideas, and forgets the middle room where most people are. life is complex and so are humans, its rarely black-and-white like this

You know, an interesting tumblr transformation that's happened gradually, and which I've seen no one talk about: ask-culture has essentially dropped off to nothing.

By which I mean, asks used to be WAY more of the tumblr economy. They used to be more common to send, and receive, and see. They were integral to the collaborative, forum-like behavior of old tumblr communities, not even to speak on the HUGE number of ask-blogs that used to exist to only be interacted with in ask-form.

I'm not saying this in a vying-for-attention way but instead in an observational way: I used to get way way more asks in like 2015, even with a fraction of my follower count. I wonder if it's due to the homogenization of social media sites? There's a lot more of this divide between "content creator" and "consumer" instead of just a bunch of peer blogs who would talk to each other. "Asks" aren't really a thing on twitter, are they? And as I understand it, the closest thing to an "ask" on instagram or tiktok would be a creator screenshotting some comment and responding to it in a new reel or video or whatever those content mediums are. Are asks just too tumblr-specific? Is that aspect of the site culture dying out as more and more people converge to using all their social media sites in the same way?

I think a lot of queer and autistic people I know deeply resonating with animals/furries/monsters is because of us basically being dehumanized our whole life and finding connection, comfort, and escapism through non human entities. it's kinda sad but also an awesome thing, it's reclamation at it's finest.
