Every argument that he had prepared fell out of his head the moment Andrew turned his head to look at him. The relief was immediate and overwhelming and if Neil hadn’t already been seated he would have collapsed under the weight of that relief.

Then Andrew blinked, furrowed his brows, “Josten?”

Suddenly none of Neil’s forgotten arguments mattered but Neil had still gathered every last drop of his ability to lie and lie convincingly. He hit the call button without a word as Andrew watched him do it before raising a brow and settling back.

Neil had left the room when the doctors all came in but listened in and when Andrew gave the year as 2006, a full four years off, he pulled up his phone and called Aaron. “Is Andrew awake?” Aaron asks, voice a touch desperate.

“He is.” Neil’s voice had sounded foreign to his own ears, “He thinks it is 2006, didn’t recognize me.”

“Good.” Aaron hung up.

Considering how quickly Neil had needed to put it together… he thinks he had done a pretty good job. He left Andrew to Aaron and purposefully ignored Wymack and Nicky trying to reason with him that Andrew would want to remember him. He removed himself from Andrew’s life as thoroughly as he could.

He went through Andrew’s phone and deleted their entire chat history and tried to tell himself it didn’t mean anything that his was by far the longest one that Andrew had since it seemed Andrew deleted his messages from everyone else at least once a month. It made deleting the conversations with everyone else that involved Neil relatively easy.
