"you can't expect people to like you" i respect & understand that. but for some of us artists, it is lonely. when we try to connect with other artists, we are left by the wayside. it might be because we are trying to be too friendly, or we are (most often) seen as 'trying to get a piece of their pie'. and there are so many people that say this is not a competition. then why is everyone making it so? art as a community is built on connections, but no established artist will connect with "lessers"

It’s not about respect here.You can expect to get along with the people that you want. Want some example ? I admire lots of people from afar, and sometimes I try to start a conversation and they’re just not interested.

Is it sad ? No. Because it’s a two way relationship, and you shouldn’t try to be friend with artist just because you like their art and find them talented. Get to talk with them as acquaintance. Go to their stream, chat with them if they allow it, get to know them better, because other else all you see is what it’s on the surface.

There’s lots of people, like me, who got idolized… other supposed that because we were ‘friend’ they could ask me to draw whatever they wanted and that I would say yes all the time “Because we’re friend, right ?” Artist want them to be seen as simple person, no senpai, no “you’re so better then me” and other kind of things that make us into some kind of really uncomfortable pedestal.

Some artist got thrust issue, others prefer being left alone, others just are content with their friends in general.

Artist don’t expect you to be overly nice, they was you to act like yourself.

I’m starting to ramble on the first point, but when you say “there are so many people that say this is not a competition. then why is everyone making it so? art as a community is built on connections, but no established artist will connect with “lessers”. “ You are actually wrong. Most of us just want friends we can trust and count on. Those who seek greatness and famous people as friend just for the point of having friend who’re popular are in the wrong, they’re actually missing the point of what friendship truly is.

I’m not saying you’re that kind of person, neither do I put everyone in the same basket. But we artists are on our guard mostly because of those people who lack maturity. 

Friendship can bloom from EVERYWHERE, I got friends I got to see get more talented everyday. Heck, even my girlfriend, who just started to draw about a year ago is starting to bloom and develop her own style and I’m so proud of her. 

I’m gonna repeat myself once more. You can’t force someone to like you, neither can others force YOU to like THEM.
