it's natural materials o'clock again & i made a stone golem.

a while ago, my partner's mother was moving and getting rid of some things, including a collection of rocks. i love a good rock, and when presented with a large wooden box of them, wanted to make a creature. i flirted with the idea of making something a little less stoney and a little more posable, but ended up deciding on this non-articulated sculpture. it has a metal wire skeleton, some tinfoil padding, and then just A Ton Of Rocks glued onto the frame. the face is a lake rock i found and painted some years ago, but didn't end up doing anything with until now.

Of note, it's also verifiably making users stupider. (Note: paper is not yet peer-reviewed, but the author goes out of their way to state they wanted to go public with preliminary findings due to how catastrophic the implications are.)

At the same time do NOT let this distract you from the enormous proposed cuts to funding scientific research, teams, projects, pedagogy, and more. Do NOT let it distract from a travel ban that just went into effect the same day of the cat fight and other moves earlier this year making the global exchange of scientific learning and research a danger for many.

If anything, this should reveal to everyone WHY the call for privatization of NSF-funded projects could go very wrong ("well I will take my Dragon spacecrafts and leave then, HMF!" - yeah do you want that possibility for everything from cancer research to asteroid tracking? probably not!). Do NOT think I don't see the timing of this little fight between one of the main people calling for privatization of government funded research endeavors such as NASA. He would LOVE these NSF budget cuts to happen so he can swoop in and funnel everything to his and his tech bros' companies.

Here's an easy to digest article about NSF (particularly NASA) proposed cuts. It covers a good amount of what may be lost (places that are STILL IN COMMISSION and doing research! Remember gravitational waves being discovered? YEAH THE PLACE THAT HAPPENED IS ON THE CUT LIST. And many others!). Something it doesn't encapsulate is if this passes it is likely Z E R O projects and research gets funded in FY 2026. Z E R O. Like just take every scientist out back and shoot them at that point, it's over. (Also just a tiny reminder all NSF funding amounts to about ~0.1% of the federal budget expenditure in FY2025, but hey, GOTTA SCRIMP AND SAVE!)

Here's a few links to action YOU can take. Hopefully this doesn't come to pass. I am not joking when I say science will take a massive hit and come to a stand-still at least in the USA. Look back in time to how Germany was pre-1930s, the center of quantum research and discoveries, the PLACE to go and learn about the latest in physics. And then we all know what happened.
