the other day i was thinking about. okay i know it's been two years and people have been arguing about this forever but i was thinking about the black knife assassins trying to kill ranni at the end of her quest

and like. so like. tbh given the timing i feel like it's in response to stealing the fingerslayer blade but like. specifically bc they realised ranni's goals didn't actually align with their own. like they wanted to bring about a lord of night (implied to probably be a perfected mimic tear??) at ranni's side but they realised too late that ranni didn't in fact want to become god-queen of the world and wanted to destroy the entire system and thus remove all possibility of their attaining their revenge on the erdtree and the only reason they realised that was bc ranni stole one of their relics (which, if they were aligned in goals, she could have probably asked for) and moved to complete her plans before they had their perfect mimic tear ready

like. otherwise there's no good explanation for why it took so long. alecto is a red herring and most of the evergaols are ghosts anyway so literally don't even worry about that. it's all bc they realised they were getting conned and moved to get her ass asap but too little too late. i'm sure other people already argue this constantly i was just thinking about it.
