Thinking about how incredible it is that Anthy got a happy ending. The entire world was telling her that she was evil. She wasn't the perfect archetypal victim, she was coerced into perpetuating further harm, even she believed she'd somehow brought the abuse upon herself. She got to be imperfect and the narrative still said she deserved happiness.
From the audience's perspective its obvious that she didn't deserve anything that was done to her, but from inside the narrative, from her perspective, that idea was revolutionary. The point of abuse is to make you believe you are broken and unlovable, whether that is because of the things done to you, or because of something you are. Recovering is difficult, but simple; it's believing you are worthy of healing. This show says you are.

I just noticed Akio does the same thing with his hair as Anthy. He only lets it down when he behaves like his actual self. He has his hair down in the car and when he fights with Utena et cetera, ties it up when he's around people at school. And he wants Anthy to do the same - only have her hair let down when she's herself. He tries to convince himself that Anthy's true self is only when she's assaulted. It's all for himself. So that he doesn't have any remorse.
And Utena always has her hair down...
