Really happy with this one…so, those that know me know I had been lusting after a Mosrite-style guitar for some time. I mean, just look at the thing! Anyway, once again friend @_dominicbenedict on Instagram had the worst interests of my wallet at heart and let me know of one up for sale.
Long story short, I played it, it was awesome and I had to have it. Apparently it had been pieced together by a local luthier…the missing bigsby style trem was replaced by a two piece Gibson style hardtail bridge, a new pickguard was fashioned, and electronics were re-soldered.
As I played it, the wiring revealed itself to be a bit inadequate as the connections to the three way switch eventually cut out for good. As sometimes happens right after buying a guitar, I unfortunately had to delay my enjoyment of playing it in order to fix it - however this ended up being good practice and didn't end up being at all difficult.
The leads from the pickups looked to be short, and were wrapped in the old-school style metal weave. I figured in order to have the length I needed and clean ends to connect to the switch, I should clip the frayed ends of the existing leads, add my own wire, solder it to the leads, and protect it with heatshrink and tape.
After doing that process for the wire coming from the pots, the neck and bridge pickup, I soldered it to a new cheap import Gibson style 3 way switch, tested it and it worked. The reason for the cutting signal in the first place was some exposed wire near the switch, and looking at the pots I had no reason to suspect (yet) that there was anything wrong with the soldering around the pots. They turned out to be fine and my job is done for now. This guitar sounds awesome.
