WEB-INSPIRATION.2 http://baugasm.com Loved the instagram account of this website as it’s really beautifully clean and graphic. I like how the icons of each post almost bounce as you scroll through and how they expand and the different scales of the image. Nice concept too, would be a really good to show development.

WEBSITE RESEARCH -
https://patternity.org Looking at the patternity website, I really love this website as its a really good resource for inspiration and looking at thing differently. I like how they on the archive page have made it black and white to tie all the black and white images together despite being lots of different patterns.

BUMPER INSPO | MOVING BRANDS Love this bumper from Apple for iPhone. The simplicity of the two colours and the overlaying type make for a simple but effective video. I like how the only thing moving is the chap and the background stays fairly consistent with the type appearing and disappearing.  I think it definitely appeals to a younger market, as when I showed my Mum she didn't quite understand without my explanation - they’ve used a young model which clarifies this. I think the subtle use of colour is good because it’s enough to make a point without being too obvious or overpowering.

INITIAL EXPERIMENT | V&A MOVING BRANDS Just wanted to experiment to see how the logo could be broken up overlaying an image from their website. I think it definitely needs to be abstracted more so its more of a feeling of coming together at the end. Image wise, its really not right as the colours together in my opinion look quite 1970s and not very fresh. The idea of having an image of the building behind is nice as it reflects the idea and the V&A ethos behind “separate fragments coming together as a whole” I think the image will be more abstracted too when we use more squares, it would be nice to have even a small part of the logo in each square for our final image.

SOUND | MOVING BRANDS
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xVlgn7vGJ0I - Some really nice sound effects that could be cut down and have subtly with the music. The sliding sounds don’t want to overtake or overpower the music as it doesn't want to sound cartoony in any way. Important at this stage to remember the classic and traditional element of the V&As branding. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0WNCBPdetG4 - Trois Gymnopedies Very calming and subtle - I can imagine the tiles of the image sliding nicely with the music, possibly needs to have a slightly happier mood to it but definitely a contender.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mI5CXRrvdUM - Francois Couperin, Les Baricades Misterieuses Faster in tempo with a more playful melodic feel to it this piece may have more potential in terms of a playing around with the tiles but it doesn't have a more regular beat which could potentially be easier in terms of animation.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wbT9DeULzU4 - Satie, Je te Veux More of a positive and optimistic feel in that Trois Gymnipedies, less contemplating. Faster in pace and opportunity for a fast moving sequence.

SCANNED TSHIRT GIF Finally got round to using my t-shirt images in a GIF format, I really like it as quite an abstract piece. It doesn't really link into my final work so much but it is good to refresh how to make a GIF and I am really pleased with the outcome. I may experiment with overlaying type and colour, but I quite like it as it is.  Photoshop - File  > Scripts > Load Files into Stack Window > Timeline > Create Frame Animation > Edit timing of each frame Exporting - File > Save for Web (GIF 128 Dithered) The file size was originally too huge so I had to use an online compressor -  I need to research how to save the file in photoshop so it’s smaller in the first place... probably by importing the images onto a smaller canvas size.  I am going to use this method to display pages/research on my blog as its so easy to do.

SERIES & SYSTEMS | RANDOM SCANNED IN EXPERIMENTS I wanted to experiment with scanning in the t-shirts we had for our projection as I had an idea about making a gif style animated poster with the textures/folds of the fabric changing colour in order with our initial grids... I never got around to making it but I visually really the images and love the technique. I am definitely going to make them into a moving GIF at some point as it is an idea that could lead to something else for another project.

FINAL PIN UP - SERIES & SYSTEMS Overall I was pleased with our final outcome for the series and systems brief. I feel as a group we overcame challenges and came out with an outcome that incorporated all of our ideas into a fairly resolved solution. What began as a solution to not being able to screen print our designs I actually visually really liked as I meant we could project all the colours we wanted to, which wouldn't have been possible with screen printing.  In terms of the designs we projected, I think we could have pushed it further, maybe going down a more abstract route, but this is something we would have done had we had more time. The feedback we had from the critique was very constructive and definitely pointed out some areas we would look to change if it were a longer project.  - We needed to encorporate the sense of time into the design more - this was more evident in our earlier grid system designs as the colours were shown in the order we saw them. - Again, we missed the idea of top, bottom and shoe combination in our final designs - these were more successful in our initial grids. - The projection technique was successful - could experiment with a more simplified design, then photographing, then overlaying type? - The scale of the building outlines is not quite right -  more consistency needed between them -  the scale of the buildings not reflected in the weight of the lines.

TUTORIAL WITH LAURA 6/10 We discussed out idea of incorporating image and type with the concept of a tile game style animation with Laura. She liked the idea as it incorporated lots of what the V&A museum stands for - coherence, collecting, inventive, imagination etc. We need to do more research for our progression to give ourselves a firm grounding on what we are working with.  What was the past branding/logo like? - Who designed it and why? What is the demographic of people? - Who are we reaching out to? - Celebration of creativity Channel 4 moving bumper Sound - keep the sliding sounds subtle to minimise risk of being cartoon like - classical music?

VISUAL RESEARCH | V&A BUMPER
Once Abi and I had decided on the concept of our V&A bumper we decided to research into how we could differently move our image tiles... We found this example from the burger company Shake Shack. Although this is an interactive example of how it could be done they concept is similar, with all the parts coming together to make a whole. I love the idea of this and we could definitely visualise this as a different idea for our outcome.

MOVING BRANDS | IDENT RESEARCH
https://vimeo.com/10412754  - Printed - Cinematic Ident DRAMATIC - FOCUS - SCALE - SIMPLICITY - ILLUSION I like in this ident how the dropping effect plays with the illusion of the eye and how it creates the illusion of scale within something so small. The sound makes it seem very dramatic for such a small thing and has both a digital/mechanical sound as well as a natural water drop sound.    https://vimeo.com/116255168 - Lyskultur
PERSPECTIVE - LIGHT - DIGITAL In this ident the “camera” pans around the letters from various angles which gives something quite small scale and makes the viewer appreciate the form. I think the downfall of this ident is the digitalisation of the type at the end. Personally I think it would be better if as soon as it reached the birds eye view of the ‘Lyskultur’ it would be best if the type digitalised in white before the screen going black, rather than all the image disappearing, then reappearing in yellow.  https://vimeo.com/119056994 - NUVO COLOUR - DIGITAL - PLAYFUL - SATISFYING This ident for design company Nuvo is very different to the two above examples of idents. It uses lots of flat shapes and colour to create quite a two-dimensional ident with lots of moving elements. I like the simplicity of it and I feel it fits its purpose and audience well.  https://vimeo.com/74333993 - Make SOUND - STREAMLINED - SIMPLICITY Really simple ident for Make,  simple block colour and shape to spell out MAKE but perfectly timed to gentle music, very peaceful and flows nicely. Particularly like the subtle texture which I feel lacks in some idents as they can look too flat and digital. This is something to consider when making our own ident.
https://vimeo.com/106757103 - Glug
PLAYFUL - COLOUR - SIMPLICITY I like in this ident how one letter leads on to the next, and how each of them is differently creatively displayed. Simple, and satisfying to watch, I like how it begins and ends with the empty screen and starts from the centre, expanding out.

V&A MARKETING RESEARCH
http://www.vam.ac.uk/__data/assets/pdf_file/0003/259914/Marketing.pdf - A really useful resource as it gave me a firm understanding of what the V&A stands for and the history behind its branding. Lots of key words and principles to consider when designing our video bumper. The V&A blueprint particularly gave a strong grounding for the 4 main elements of the brand. IMAGINATION - GENEROSITY - COHERENCE - RIGOUR It was particularly interesting to see how the iconic V&A logo has stood the test of time, despite being designed in 1989 it still looks very current and like it was designed today. This shows the strength of using something strong and simple of a logo. The stylised version of the logo with the missing leg of the A shows that something traditional but elegant is timeless. http://archive.wolffolins.com/work/va?ghost=1 2002 Wolff Olins refresh  - V&A logo retained, it’s decided to keep the logo but to use it in a more confident way, incorporating colour and dismissing black. This is an important element to remember in our bumper designing process in order to inkeep with the brand. DIRECT, ELEGANT & PERSUASIVE http://www.vam.ac.uk/content/articles/v/v-and-a-podcast-branding-the-museum/ Interesting podcast with lots of useful information on what the branding behind the V&A stands for. Definitely an emphasis on the V&A being a world leader in terms of museums. Mentioned a few times is the idea that there are many separate fragments in the V&A museum, with lots of different departments but the branding brings it together as a whole - this idea really compliments our idea for all the different sections of the image coming together to create one clean logo at the end.

Infographic Research | JOSE DUARTE I was really drawn to Duartes’ work when I was researching, I think the contrast between the natural organic backgrounds and the clean lines of the balloons work well. This aesthetic compliments the content of what the infographic is communicating; how the number of internet users as increased over time. I like the simplicity of the small scale type, which looks like its almost from a textbook, with the bold type and italic beneath. All the information is there without it losing the simple contemporary style of the images.

AFTER EFFECTS REFRESH Definitely was good to refresh on the AE basics as I had definitely got a bit rusty - especially on things like file type and importing/exporting compositions. Learnt lots about making the most of effects and how to make them look realistic - particularly the ripple water effect. It can’t be seen in the video above but when the composition is on black a line is drawn above the buildings, this is a feature I will definitely use for future projects (import as a shape layer from illustrator) Despite my AE crashing and loosing my animation it was to useful to learn how to make an object scale with the waveform of sound in the background... its a really simple but effective tool to remember and could also be used subtly instead of being the main feature of an animation.

As out posters didn't necessarily need to be printed my group have decided to take the opportunity to project our infographics onto t-shirts for our final presentation. I think this will give the posters a more contextual background in terms of our research being on colour and location whilst uniting our three posters. Too push this idea further, with more time we could take the t-shirt to the location and project/print the stripes onto the t-shirts in their location.
