WEEK 14 Reflection
Knowledge is always changing people's view of the world. After this semester's study, I have a new understanding and idea of the world and design. For the scale of design across, It's much more extensive than I thought. It is not only in product or custom, it even involve everything in our life. This reflection essay I would like to discuss the things I learned and talk about how these things resonated me with my new concept of design.
Throughout the semester, the most meaningful topics for me are “Design Sensibilities” and “Sustainable Design”. At the beginning of the semester, we just entered the design field, our concept of design was crude and superficial, Design Sensibilities tought me design is not only graphic and show on the surface, it is more like a huge system, from the management to selling, every step is necessary and complicated. Design Sensibilities let me learn that effective design thinking entail more than applying design methods to product the best outcomes.Designers need to consider problems from the perspective of consumers and their needs.And also a good design should be putted the inspiration, methods, emotion by the designers.For example, there is an music app that I like very much. It will recommand 30 songs to you every day, and all of them are through the data, according to your preferences recommended to you. And also the playlists and random songs are recommended based on personal preference, so when people are using this app, we will feel so comfortable and relaxed because everthing around is related to you. Every end of the year, it will summarize your experience during the year, the song you listen most and your favourite singer. In addition, people can online shopping on this app, everyday it will update some products that is musicical or related to life, it is so convinent for people that we can shop while listening to music.
For the sustainable design, we can know more about the current situation of environment in the world, and some sutainable ways or products that produced to solve these problems. I learned that the sustainable design is also not only on products or environment, it also involve the society and economy. Sutainable distribute in many fields and the major parts are social, economy and environment.And there are many kinds of ways to make sustainable design come true. It gage students an awareness that we have to protect the environment and start to use sustainable way to live and creat more sustainable design to improve our life quality.My favourite example of sustainable design is sharing bicycle that I had mentioned in my presentation.The sharing bicycle has become a global phenomenon because it is a good sustainable design. But different places have different ways to operate the sharing bicycle.After investigation, I found that Shared bikes in many countries are still too rigid and inconvenient. My favourite one is the sharing bicycle in China. I have experienced riding the sharing bicycle some times. There are many advantages of it. First of all, people are able to ride the bicycle by scanning the QR code and log in the software. Secondly, people will pay the fee online and also it gives people a lot of benefits, for the first 10 times people can ride the bicycle without paying, even though 10 times ran out,people just need to pay a very low price to ride the bicycle.Lastly, thereis not a fixed and mandatory place to park the bicycle, people can park the bicycle wherever they want, because there is someone else will ride it away, it is very convinent for people.So people are so glod to ride a bicycle instead of car, so that reduce the pollution, it is a very benefical sustainable design and protect our environment a lot.
The topics that we learned during this year are very powful and useful, but for me there is a least revelant topic, it is “What is life”, it gave me a feeling that i am have biological class, and also It's a very conceptual topic, and it's hard to get people's imaginations going.And it has less revelant to our future design.
All of these lessons combined made me see the world with a different preconception.Design sensibilities tought me designers need to put the emotion and communication with customers, in order to design a good product.The System thinking tought me we should maintain the harmony of all parts of our body.We have to think everything in a system order because everything is a system.In assignment one, we went to The Louvre and I learned a lot about the cultures and traditon of different countries. The seamlesss design told me different fields when they emerged it will create many creative design to benefit human.And the sustainable design told us need to protect the environment and think about some new ideas to create some design that make our life better.They realized me that as a future designer, we need to observe our world and find shortcoming and improve them with our intelligent, find something unknown and create something creative.
Among all the scales of design acrossing, the one that I want to operate as a designer is seamless design and sustainable design. Firstly, the seamless design let every kinds of design evolve and helps people and environment, I am interested in custom design, and nowadays the fashion market is existing a big waste problem, and also many company are still using animals hair, it waste resouce and Upset the ecological balance.So if I can be a designer that involve seamless design, I will research more recycle material to design the custom and design with protecting the environment principle.Designers always have the responsibility to influence people and spread the ideas to public.And then for the sustainable design,I will try to use all the recycle material to create my products, to make sure the resource is not be wasted. It reminds me that I made a friend during design week,he comes from Thailand, his project attract me to know about it. His project is different shapes of chairs that woven from discarded wires. The research of it is that all around the world, there are many country distoried by the discarded wires, it caused a lot of pollution and lead to many people lost their homeland. So he createde many kinds of chairs that we can use in the real life, and made by discarded wires. It actually solve the discarded wires waste because they are difficult to deal with.I love his concept because it is a very sustainable example.So as a designer that involve sustainable design, I will design everything with the principle that is protecting the environment and sustainable development.Both of this two scales are about envirinment protection, our earth situation is becoming worse and worse, the resouce is less and less, it is necessary for us to take action to do something to save and protect it.

WEEK 13 Presentation
This week we had the rest students’ presentation, and the topic of them are biomimicry design and also sustainable design.
The first group is sustainable design , I like their speech very much because they talked about the sustainable design from the history to the present. They interspersed many examples in the PPT, as well as many reference books, such as the sustainable design of clothing design, and the cooperation between the team members was also very good, but the beauty was that their examples were too single, and they did not think about this topic from multiple fields and angles
The second group is biomimicry design, This is an interesting speech, because two students use funny words to attract everyone's attention in their speech, so that everyone won't feel bored, and they also do a good job in the content, from history to the future, many fields have to be explained, there are also good references for everyone to watch, the most important thing is that they also have a good debate topic for everyone to actively participate in and And think about the topic carefully. It's a good activity. After people think about it and express their opinions, summarize themselves feelings.
And the last one is our groups presentation, I actually dont like it because the teammates are not united hardworking enough , but I would like to share my opinion and some examples that happening in my country to eveyone.
I think it is very helpful to have a presentation, because when you are preparing the presentation, you will go deeper and learn more, understand the topic completely.

WEEK 12 Sustainable Design
What is sustainable design?
Sustainable design is the design that can improve the people’s life quality and at the same time, the designers use the sustainable concept and material.
They helped life to be sustainable.Sustainable design essentially seeks to reduce the negative impacts that occur in our environment. Designers used the improved way or innovative way to maintain our environment and increase our life quality.
Why is sustainable design important?
Sustainable design is important for multiple reasons. It reduces negative impacts to our environment, such as our dependence on our non-renewable energy sources. (coal, petroleum,etc.)Sustainability will reduce waste, consumption of non-renewable energy, and have a safe environment.
Three main fields that sustainable design involved are: economy,social and environment. Three fields sustainable design all provided people better way to live.There are some advantages of them.
For economy,if every company use sustainable design products or sustainable way to operate his company, the company will save a lot of energy, material and also money.At the same time, it provides some new opportunity for people to get a job , reduced the unemployeement rate.
For social, it makes people life more convinient, and also make people live in an environmental protection atmosphere.For example, the sharing bicycle, it helps people go out more convinent and also encourge people use a envirnomental protection way to go out.
For environment, it helps to decrease the use of natural resources and fuels.
In the future, as the development of science and people’s concept of sustainable design,there are a lot more intellgant design to make our life more sustainable..

WEEK 11 DESIGN WEEK
This week we had the design week, I was completely enjoyed this week.
The first few days, I was working on my unfinished project, and in the end it was displayed on the third day.During the time that I joined the Herman Miller chair competition, I have gained a lot during this period. From the beginning, the original purpose to join is to make friends and in the end my chair project was be displayed, I am so happy that myself overcame a lot of problems and also hold on to the end. I explored my mind and stimulated the inspiration.Also got lots of skills about software and producing product process. Preliminary understanding of the product design and production process.
This week also there are a lot of creative designers came to design district from global. I made some friends during this time .
The first friend came from Thailand. His project is the chairs that compiled by the abandoned wires, the abandoned wires coursed some environmental issue, it produced a lot of pollution, it made some parts of country’s people leave their homeland because of the pollution and also it is very harmful for people’ health. So he used these wires to make some chairs instead of throw them away to exacerbate pollution.I think this is a vey good idea of sustainable design, it helps to protect our environment.
Another friend is a boy from London, his fashion design project is also made me admired. The inspiration and details of custom are so amazing.
There are a lot of great artwork that displayed duringf this week, my favourite one is the textile that stitched . They are seprarated and when the wind blow they look so great. When combine them together, they are actually tell a story. In India, animals are swimming to the unique insland when it is raining, I feel so sacred when I was watching the details of it.

WEEK 10 Biomimicry Design
What is biomimicry design?
Designers imitate the discipline of nature, and design and manufacturing processes to produce something that is helpful and benefical to people and get a healthier, sustainable planet.
Biomimicry (from bios, meaning life, and mimesis, meaning to imitate)is a new science that studies nature's best ideas and then imitates these designs and processes to solve human problems.
There are some ascepts that biomimicry design mimic :
To mimic the shape of tools that nature uses. For example , many vehicles, tall buildings with streamlined edges, have been found to have the shape of a fish with the least resistance, thus being widely used in the world
To mimic the surface of organisms. For example , I have been Singapore and saw this amazing building, the concept of the responsive facade is biomimetic too. It stems from the concept of spiky or fibrous husks that protect the fruit or the seeds inside. The facade of Esplanade Theatre, for example, mimics the semi-rigid skin of the durian plant which is covered in thorns to protect its inner content. The building’s exterior adjusts throughout the day to allow sunlight in without overheating the space.

To mimic the structure of ecosystems in nature. For example , also in Singapore, Supertrees at Gardens by the bay. The tree-like structures are fitted with environmental technologies that mimic the ecological function of trees.
I think these concept is very good for people to live and also for emvironment to develop, hope in the future there are more and more useful biomimicry creative design !

WEEK 09 Seamless Design 02
The second week of seamless design, we learned about the invisible technologles and visible screens.
First of all, we talked about the revolution about writing, nowadays, writing is so common and normal that people will not think it is a kind of technology. From many years ago, people were still writing by hand or using very hard way to print words on paper, but currently writing is a very easy way in our life, we can write by many kinds of pens, computers or touchable screens and so on.It is a revolution of writing on seamless design.
And also the digital screens are also evolving. From the blurry, bulky digital screens of television computers to the lightweight, high-definition electronic screens of laptops, mobile phones and even watches, digital screens are also experiencing seamless design.
In current world, many designers created various helpful and intellgent design that are seamless design, they are actually help our life reach a new and better level. Foe example, we mentioned on the class, google home, its intellgence reminds me there is a new technology in China, it called Xiaomi intellegent home. I experienced it last summer holiday when I backed to China. I went to a private cinema and when you are in the room, you just need to speak “ open the curtain”, then the curtain will open automatically, people can also command the intellegent managerment, just speak out “ turn on the light in living room” or “ turn off the light on the wall”. It will follow your command and satisfy people’s requirement. This kind of intellgence helps people’s life more convienent and improve people’s life quality. It shows that seamless design is improving and becoming better in a fast speed nowadays.
In the future, designers are coming out more creative ideas to make our life better, for example, the smart lighting and eye lock and so on that we mentioned in the class, we are looking forward to seeing these!

WEEK 08 SEAMLESS DESIGN
What is seamless design?
As I think, seamless design is some intellgent design that beyond the limitations, to achieve the perfect integration of two or more fields, for the benefit of mankind.
Seamless design is “Happening without any sudden changes, interruption, or difficulty.”
It provides users with an experience that is not limited to a specific hardware, setting or context.It is able to integrate with other technologies enough to share information that may be contextually relevant.It reduces the level of active involvement need to perform tasks or find information, and it can input criteria contextually.
Seamless design connect all energy: intellgency, material and capacity. It also involve all fields: human social, natural environment, technology, architecture and economy. Seamless design helps them to be connected and combined,to help the life better.
In fashion field, designer used very minimal cutting and sewing to make “Seam Free” and “Stitch Free” make true.In architecture field, designers blurring the boundaries between different aspects, to make architecture and nature joined.

WEEK 07 Synegistic Design 02
This week we learned about systems thinking, models and ways of representation.
What is model?
“Everything we think we know about the world is a model” Donella Meadows <Thinking in Systems>
Model is what we see, what we think and what we know in the world, It could be a language, a picture, a system and so on.
What is system thinking ?
A mental model is an explanation of a person's thought process for how something works in the real world. It is a representation of the world around us, the relationship between the parts, the intuitive perception of one's own actions and their consequences.
What is representation?
Representation is a description or portrayal of someone or something in a particular way.
My favourite sentence in this lesson is “Everything that is “designed” requires some kind of “modelling”. It is a very good summary of model and it shows that everything is model.
For example, In design, we give specific names to different types of models. Give the models name, this is a kind of model .In the most generic sense, models range from simple sketches to computer programs with millions of lines of code. Millions of code is another kind of model. In all models, some elements of the actual 'thing' are abstracted or mapped into the model.
