jamie here! this was spurred by a really disgusting post i saw while browsing, so here we are! under the cut is a very long write-up of how the fandom specifically treats jimmy in regards to lobotomies, how it affects the victims of lobotomy, how people misunderstand what it does and how it affects the victim. I'm using 'victim' here because we're talking about people who were forced without their consent.

this is a recently prevalent thing going on in the fandom and i wanted to say i find that it reeks of absolutely unprecedented levels of sanism, but anyway...

lobotomies aren't 'cute' and make the people who get them all 'happy' and 'cutesy'. and they sure as hell don't make people docile sex toys or whatever the fuck you people are doing to jimmy. (<- yeah people are actually doing that one, it's fucking weird. block me if you do this by the way i don't want your stank ass near me).

Rosemary Kennedy was a victim of a forced lobotomy, and she was was "reduced to the mental capacity of a two year old child, no longer able to walk or speak intelligibly, and was incontinent".

they can make the victim incontinent, no longer able to control their bladder or bowel. they can cause the victim to go into uncontrollable fits, slamming their heads against things and writhing around on the floor screaming and sobbing because they can't control their bodies anymore.

they can reduce the victim to the mentality of an infant child because of how badly it destroys their brain. lobotomies can cause brain bleeds, meningitis, and dementia. they can blunt the emotions of the victim and reduce their motor function. many lobotomy victims experienced violent, convulsive seizures.

it can cause them to get stuck in behavior loops (one woman, as the wikipedia article elucidates, was often stuck pouring coffee from an empty pot). many victims need to be punished-rewarded like children because they no longer have the brain function of an adult. many lobotomy victims can no longer walk. some victims suffer from decorticate posturing, where their arms become drawn up to their chest due to brain damage / interrupted neural pathways; the same thing can happen with decerebrate posturing, where their arms are twisted out and backwards.

its not cutesy and doesnt make the victim "happy" and treating jimmy in this way (because as we know, he's mentally ill, most likely schizophrenic, an illness in which lobotomies were forced upon people for, after being rendered unconscious via electroshock "treatment") reeks of ableism towards schizophrenic people.

in this specific instance, i don't care that jimmy is a 'bad person' by moral and legal standards - it is still, frankly, horrifying to be so specifically ableist towards a violent schizophrenic man that you bring back a type of archaic mental torture that hasn't been performed in a recorded manner in only a little under half a century (this is excluding "at home" lobotomies and quack doctors; walter freeman's last lobotomy was in 1967, and it had as a procedure, already began to be abandoned by the 1950's).

I'm not usually a person who can feel distressed by any form of art, but all lobotomized Jimmy content is so disturbing in its nature I just can't stay silent. If you think that THIS is your perfect "good ending" for Mouthwashing, you're a hypocrite. Cause, hey. You "fixed him". He's peaceful now. Everyone's happy. The problem's gone. Congrats! Your problem solving skills are even WORSE than Jimmy's. Now pat yourselves on the head and make this shell of a human smile to Curly like its not the most disturbing thing you can do.

No person diserves to get ripped off the thing that makes us humans. Personality. Ability to think. Espessially no one deserves it done by a person you trust. Your friend. Your captain.

If this was an another story, I wouldn't say a thing. But it's Mouthwashing. A game which has taking responsibility as one of its themes. A game that shines with the depiction of characters' personalities. A game that makes you feel every thought of Jimmy as a central part of its experience.

And lobotomy?

Its not a "happy end". Not "fixing". Its cruelty. Not nessessary, deliberate cruelty that doesn't compare to Jimmy's impulsive cruel decisions in any way possible.

Might make a longer post abt it but one hill I will die on is that Curly was also abused by Jimmy- before the crash and after the crash. Because of our culture of toxic masculinity, Curly probably justified it to himself: Jimmy was just “messing around and having some fun with me, you know- just stuff that guys do.” In the game, Anya and Curly respond to his abuse in different ways. Anya has a fawn response and Curly has a freeze response. It can also be implied that Curly has a hard time setting boundaries and it’s why Jimmy has been able to manipulate him- to use Curly as his personal therapist and punching bag, hating him because he perceives Curly as perfect and unflawed. I think people saw pre crash Curly as this ultra “Chad” kinda guy- he’s attractive, strong, and seemingly confident, and our unconscious bias makes us believe/has us forget that anybody can be abused, even people like Curly- there is no one box that victims fit into.

I was thinking about it for so long... No crew's member deserves death (or anything that happened to them in original game). They all believed in the better side

I think MouthWashing has been a good example of how the media has jaded the common man. I see countless people say that Curly should have killed Jimmy or Anya should have killed Jimmy, hell that anyone should have killed Jimmy.

Do some of y'all actually forget that killing someone is one of the most traumatizing things for the regular fucking Joe to do?

Not to mention, Curly, who I am in the boat of believing Curly has been being abused by Jimmy for years, sees him as a friend and wouldn't even be able to do that.

Anya is a kind soul who wants to HELP people not hurt them. She quite literally keeps saying she doesn't want to believer a person's worst moment makes them a monster. She is looking Jimmy in the eyes and begging him to be better.

Swansea had no intrest in hurting him. I've wanted to rant about this but to everyone who keeps saying Anya should have told him so he could take care of Jimmy; she does tell him. And you know what he does? He gives Jimmy a fucking side eye. HE WOULDNT PROTECT HER.

Daisuke is a 20's something year old guy who knows no one here, he's being friendly to seem cool, he's not going to hurt Jimmy because he is pit into a position where he believes Jimmy can be trusted, let alone he's not gonna kill a man for a woman he's known for 100~ days.

And please do not comment "oh they could have just kept him locked in a room somewhere" because that is a whole other rant for me to go on because no Curly would not do that to a man he knows can be volatile and is mentally ill.

Kinda sad to realise that Jimmy have to go through long course of therapy just to keep existing normally; but Curly is always here for him, even its seems to Jimmy that his friend loses opportunities in his life communicating with such a complicated problematic person.

Around this time in the fall, I caught a hyperfixation of the movie "The boy". I still really love them (Greta and Brahms, of course). I really liked the story of both main characters, which is amazing, usually I have minor characters in my favorites who did not give up to anyone and are the first to be cut "to advance the plot" X'D
