When You’re Fighting Depression …

3. Do one small thing as it will help you to get moving - and you’ll start feel more hopeful as you see yourself make some progress. Also, keeping yourself busy will interrupt your thinking, and will help stop your feelings from getting even worse.

4. Although it’s not usually helpful to isolate ourselves, be wise in the people that you choose to be around. If other people are too happy – or too harsh and critical – it will compound your feelings of negativity. Instead, try and spend time with people who are gentle and calm, and who help you feel accepted and more positive.

5. Remember that tomorrow could be a better day. You just need to find the energy to make it through today.

Why Homestuck means so much to me, aka the story I don’t tell.

I recall in August of 2010, before I read Homestuck, I was near Circle Centre Mall in Indianapolis. I was homeless at the time. I lived on the streets of downtown Indy. My own choice. But it was the month of GenCon, which meant a little bit of entertainment for me. I liked to walk around the convention center to see Doctor Who, Star Wars, and my other favourite fandoms.

But I would usually go around the mall during the afternoon. People tended to throw food out as they left the mall, and it was usually pretty good stuff. Sandwiches, pretzels, y'know. Food is food, and it’s precious when you can’t afford it for yourself.

The details of the afternoon are a bit lost to me, but I distinctly remember sitting on the street corner outside of the mall’s entrance. I never ever held out a cup or a cardboard sign. Honestly, I was just sitting there because I was too tired to walk back to the convention center.

And these three guys came out of the mall. They were wearing odd cosplays to me at the time. I’d never heard of Homestuck, so I wouldn’t have recognized John, Dave, and Bro. But they exited the mall and stood there near me, talking to each other about the events they were planning on attending that day. But the Dave cosplayer kept looking at me. I could tell, even from behind his shades. They began speaking in low tones, and then disappeared inside the mall again.

I didn’t really think anything of it. They were just cosplayers. There were hundreds of cosplayers around the city.

I was getting ready to leave about ten minutes later. The cops were walking around, and I didn’t want to be told to leave. But the three guys came back out right before I walked away. The Bro cosplayer walked over to me and handed me a white plastic bag and a styrofoam cup, which I could tell had soda in it. The bag had a to-go container in it, and I knew it had Chinese food in it.

I hadn’t eaten since the night before.

Truth be told, I had to stop myself from crying. And he gave me a hug. I told all of them thank you. And I told them that they were amazing people.

I didn’t see them again.

But over a year, after I had cleaned up my act, went home, gone to college, I discovered what Homestuck actually was. I recognized the symbols from John and Dave’s shirts from a random fanart I saw on Facebook.

On October 24th, 2011, I began reading Homestuck. And I’ve found the fandom to be just like those three heroes at GenCon 2010. You guys have become my family. You are all so amazing and wonderful. I feel at home with all of you. Even though the comic is finally ending, this fandom is never going to end, and you guys will remain close to my heart until the end of time.

Why is it so damn hard to come out as gay or bi? Why can't it be easy to tell it to your family when you're religious? I mean.. I've been struggling so damn hard to come out and tell my parents. I've told my mom once when I was highschool, but she freaked right the fuck out as if I murdered someone. I love my family so damn much that I'd rather push away my happiness to stay close with them. Even though it kills me when I see a beautiful girl that "might" be interested in me and I can't have her. I knew I was bi when I was in highschool, was bicurious at first but, I just came to loving the same sex. I am 24 now still trapped in the darkness of that lonely closet and is afraid to come out and say it. "I'm bisexual and I'm proud of it!" Then I start to think of all those stupid harsh thoughts where they reject me, push me away and just stop speaking to me completely. It breaks me down to the core to where I can't handle hiding this anymore. I love my family so damn much and I'm so close with them, but having to find my soul mate who might be the same gender who I'll never have? No matter what I do... I'm trapped in a lose, lose situation.
