With more of a focus on information and opinions about the upcoming series. I'll try to avoid speculation as much as possible. This isn't for news, lot of the things I cover may be a day or two old so don't expect news updates and as always, just a random InuYasha fan.

Based on the new information. I'm going out on a limb and say that Kagome, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru definitely not dead. I would go so far onto that limb without any rope tied to the trunk AND with that limb already hanging by a limb.
I suspect this will be a case of the kids setting out to find their parents, finding their parents trapped or under a spell, released and then assisting their parents in taking down the new threat.
I would honestly be surprised if it's anything but that, having the kids be the ones to kill the Big Bad themselves would be an odd decision based on the fact that three of their parents are the most powerful people in that period of time.

"Based on everything I'm reading I don't think the new series is supposed to be a "direct sequel" that doesn’t have to connect to the original series, if that makes any sense."
Think that's the approach to it, a different name, largely run by the creative team that worked on the original with appearances from the characters from the original series. It's marketed as a sequel while at the same time being treated as it's own thing.
So for those that want to tie it into the original series can, and those that don't want to don't have to.
Realistically, I see this series doing it's own thing, but by the end of it everything will basically be back to where they were at the end of the original series. Everyone is together and life continues. Which works for me, and why I wasn't planning on covering it when I first heard about it.
Don't think this will effect the canon heavily, it'll be like one of the movies, or a filler episode in the original, lot of stuff happens, but nothing really changes otherwise. That's why this is something more to be enjoyed, it's not something I'm taking overly seriously for that reason.

"I'm not sure how I feel about the original characters being pushed back for these newers ones don't get me wrong I love the idea of the children themselves but it won't be the same for me."
My problem exactly. It's why I would prefer a prequel, or even a sequel that follows the characters that we know and love already. That's my issue with the concept, I actually do like the idea of Setsuna and Moroha by design, and I am willing to give them a chance as characters.
The problem being, it's never going to match up to the original series no matter how hard they try, but I'll always have that series and those adventures with Kagome and Inuyasha to go back to, we all do. They already had their adventure, so I can't say I mind them wanting to take things into a new direction, I can even get behind characters like Moroha because I like Inuyasha and Kagome... but it's not going to be the same.
And based on the how they seem to be going about it now, I really don't like the concept and approach, so that's not really helping things either. I'll be frank in saying I'm fully in it for the original characters, I'll be interested in seeing what the girls do, but the original characters are the main selling point, and the less they show up the less I'll be interested.
Admittedly, and this is my overall opinion on this series as a whole this doesn't feel like something for me, it's just an excuse to see the characters I like again, and maybe find myself liking the other characters. I'm not looking to love this series, I am hoping to like it though, at the same time I acknowledge I don't really need it and was fine with how the original series ended. So I get where you're coming from.

On an entirely different topic but still the same line.
How badly do you believe Inuyasha and Kagome are going to have their powers nerfed in the sequel?
I’m having a hard time believing that she got separated from her parents, one being one of the most powerful priestess’ of that time, and the other being a dog demon with a giant sword and the senses of a bloodhound?

“How much faith do you have in Sunrise to do this new anime justice on a scale of 1 to 10?”
As much faith as I have always given Sunrise: 1/2 a Jaken.

"A lot of speculation seems to be on the fact that Kagome doesn't appear on the promotional stuff, so many are assuming her fate based on that."
Yeah... there is a reason, not one that is going to make people very happy. Truth be told I would be shocked at Kagome or Sango playing heavy roles. You have 3 new female characters that are the primary focus, I am not sure on what is going to happen with other male characters, but Inuyasha and Sesshomaru will get a larger focus based on that fact alone. So I completely get her not being shown for that reason, there are new female leads and their the focus of the series, now if there are more male characters which there likely would be, that might push Inuyasha and Sesshomaru back a tiny bit, but I doubt it. Even then Inuyasha is on the stuff because this is a sequel to a series named InuYasha and he's incredibly recognizable and Sesshomaru because of his kids being involved.
I don't really expect Kagome, Sango and even Miroku doing a whole lot. BUT I could be wrong, but the reason for Kagome not being around on the promotion, might just be she isn't the primary lead female character anymore, just kind of how things go.

"The idea of characters dying is just weird since the plot seems to be focused around all the kids finding their parents what would be the point of the plot and we found out they were dead the idea is setup to have a happy ending."
You're right, based on that kind of doubt we'll find a situation where any of the other characters aren't well off. Part of why the concept is more to give the children breathing room to develop away from their parents to be their own person.
Feel it's more a way to turn the focus on the new characters and away from the older ones, before they bring them back. Think it's more the situation of the kids basically getting a similar backstory to what Inuyasha got and the fact that the kids were separated at all. I get the reasoning behind it completely, give the kids time to get acquainted with the audience, but at the same time don't like it for that reason because it has a lot of drawbacks.
I agree though, people wondering if characters are dead are going too far with this. My issue is more what the approach with these characters is than anything else.

Yashahime: My Opinion from the Start
I kind of don't care either way? I think it's awesome for a lot of people that want to see more, at the same time I don't think there will be a lot of focus on the original characters either, which lowers my interest.
I had the same issue with Naruto and Boruto (though frankly I wasn't that big a fan of Naruto, so it wasn't as jarring for me).
I don't think I'll care a whole lot with characters like Kagome, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru taking a backseat position, and the less they are around, the less I'll be interested. As those characters are the reason I fell in love with the series, it's pretty hard for my love to transfer over to another character even if it is their children. Which is often a big issue when it comes to sequels that focus on the children. Mind you we don't know all the details, but if this is the case of Kagome, Inuyasha and Sesshomaru barely around? I'm really not going to be interested.
But hey, that's the thing about sequels, the people that love them acknowledge them, like them and consider them a true sequel, the people that don't disavow them and never acknowledge them.
I think everyone should give it a chance, but my expectations aren't higher either, every instance of a follow up that starts off with the concept of "Here are the children of these characters you like, it's their turn to go on an adventure" has rarely worked out well from my standpoint.
