i watched: brick (2005)
before i say anything else, i want to say PLEASE WATCH THIS AND TALK ME ABOUT IT IF YOU DO!! i reallyyyyyy loved this one
the people involved are: rian johnson (director), joseph gordon-levitt, emilie de ravin, nora zehetner, lukas haas, noah fleiss, matt o’leary (stars)
it's about: after an ominous phone call from his ex-girlfriend emily, brendan frye finds her dead body. he launches his investigation into her death, bringing him into dark groups he’d avoided at his high school
my rating (out of 5): ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
i thought: oh man. y’all. i LOVED this movie. holyyyyy shit. the texture of it was so rich (this movie couldn’t be made today). the language was baffling at times, but intentionally so. it’s a love letter/homage to noirs. the character archetypes are executed so so well. it’s FUNNY. woo yeah would absolutely recommend. i need to watch more low budget directorial debuts NOW
this movie may be for you if: you like noirs, you like joseph gordon-levitt, you want to watch a bit of a head-scratcher and you can suspend your disbelief about them being high schoolers
my favorite quote was: “I've got all five senses and I slept last night, that puts me six up on the lot of you.” OR “I gave you Jerr to see him eaten, not to see you fed” or lowkey there are a loooooooot but those are two highlights.
i watched it because: rian johnson’s debut! not to be basic but i’m a huge knives out fan, and getting to see his debut was sooo cool. also listened to an interview with him on the podcast filmspotting about this movie, post-watch, an experience i highly highly recommend. he’s both insightful and hilarious.
spoiler-y thoughts below the cut!
i FUCKINH KNEW IT WAS HIS KID HAHAHAAAAA. i’m so smart.
what a gut punch though. you feel so bad for brendan, and yet? he is the one who pushed emily away. at the simplest form, that’s what happened. it’s all so melodramatic and so high school. “loving some girl like she’s all there is anywhere.” “You're the only thing I love!” the emphasis one who’s eating lunch with who. arghhhh
brendan is Not a perfect person or a perfect hero. rian johnson used the phrase “pushing forward like a fist” in that interview i mentioned which i thought was a great explanation of his behavior. i loved him taking off his glasses every time he was about to get beat up.
i loved the complexity of every character - tug is sympathetic and also emily’s killer. laura can never really be trusted, but it’s hard to get a read on how manipulative she is until the very end (she called him a DIRTY WORD😱). the pin’s mom just wants to make sure brendan has the appropriate beverage to go with his cornflakes.
i’m gonna be thinking about this one for a long time.

i watched: flow (2024)
the people involved are: Gints Zilbalodis (writer and director)
it's about: a cat who gets swept up in a biblical flood forms a ragtag group of animal friends aboard a boat. that's...basically it i think. there is no dialogue, only music and various animal sounds.
i thought: i actually watched this movie last saturday and i'm still not sure if i liked it or not. i had a friend over and we both ended the movie rather confused. i think it was good? i just felt very out of sorts while watching it. perhaps i was too bogged down in the "how" of this biblical flood and whatnot to appreciate the messages about change and learning to trust those around you. those were valuable, certainly. i was prepared for this to be one of my favorite movies of the year, and it didn't quite hit me the way i wanted it to. so maybe i just didn't *get* it? it was, however, visually stunning. not a bad movie!! i am sure it has legions of fans. just not my favorite.
this movie may be for you if: you like it when weird shit happens in studio ghibli movies, you want to see the single greatest use of microsoft blender of our generation, you want to have to think a bit while watching an animated movie
my favorite quote was: there is no dialogue in this movie. my favorite moment was when the capybara flopped over and fell asleep.
i watched it because: it's nominated for best animated movie at the oscars and has been getting a lot of buzz! i'm curious to see if it will win, or if the wild robot will.

i watched: dazed and confused (1993)
the people involved are: too many to name! short list: matthew mcconaughey, ben affleck, jason london, wiley wiggins, parker posey (stars, but genuinely there are so many people 😭 i just can't name all of them), richard linklater (writer and director)
it's about: the last day of school for a bunch of juniors and 8th graders in 1970s texas. not too much of a plot if we're being honest, it's a vibe movie.
i thought: such a vibe. SUCH a vibe. probably could raise an eyebrow at some things, but like. massively enjoyed it. i had a fun time imagining what kind of heart attack my parents would have had if i had done this the day i graduated middle school. it cured my writer's block just a bit (at least, i'm hoping it did. haven't had too much time but have been feeling better post-watching)
this movie may be for you if: you want before sunrise, but way less depth and way more beer, you just wanna hang out, you feel any form of nostalgia for the american high school experience
my favorite quote was: "it'd be a lot cooler if you did."
i watched it because: richard linklater!! yay for richard linklater!

i (re)watched: the oustiders (1983)
the people involved are: francis ford coppola (director) c. thomas howell, ralph macchio, matt dillon, diane lane (stars)
it's about: ponyboy curtis and his friends live in tulsa, oklahoma, where teenagers are split up into two main groups-the greasers, and the socs. over the course of a few days, the rivalry between the groups leads to trouble and tragedy on both sides of town. along the way, ponyboy finds himself questioning if they're all really so different after all.
i thought: oooof. this is one of my all-time favorites, as is the book. it gets me every time, but different things affect me during different watches. aside from the super quotable lines, i really do think it has a great message that's just as relevant today as it was in the 60s. also worth mentioning that the cast is absolutely STACKED with brat pack guys. in this rewatch, i would say matt dillon as dally winston is my favorite performance but it's a close call.
this movie may be for you if: you like tightly-knit groups of attractive young men, you think we all have more similarities than differences, you like sunrises and robert frost, you want to cry
my favorite quote was: "stay gold."
i watched it because: i am going to new york (!!!!) to see the musical on broadway (!!!!) and wanted it to be super fresh in my mind

i watched: threesome (1994)
the people involved are: andrew fleming (writer and director), josh charles, lara flynn boyle, stephen baldwin (stars)
it's about: two college guys, eddy and stuart, live together, and by mistake, a young woman named alex is assigned to room with them. they become friends after a rocky start, but very quickly, stuart gets the hots for alex, and alex for eddy, all while eddy is figuring out he's gay (and possibly into stuart). whatever will they do?
i thought: this movie was fun! it also does exactly what it says on the tin. was the gay rep unproblematic? no it was not. several moments made me cringe intensely. (characters in the movie would benefit from learning that no means no, and several slurs are used in one scene.) if josh charles was a worse actor and less hot i don't think it would have worked for me. thankfully, he is neither! all in all, a very attractive trio have a raunchy fun time in a movie which opens with a josh charles voiceover providing the latin roots of the word "deviant" and i wasn't mad about it.
this movie may be for you if: you like josh charles, you want to see him being gay, you are intrigued by the concept of a movie called threesome
my favorite quote was: "am not!" "are too!" "am not!" "are too!" "bitch." "HETEROSEXUAL!"
i watched it because: @charlie-why-do-they-swoon recommended it! thank you!! :D
