Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino is a bold and brilliant album reflecting Turner’s ever more comprehensive creative vision. It’s like he’s directing a noir film about a moon colony resort where the nightclub house band is the Arctic Monkeys; he’s pictured every detail, even if he’s only willing to give away a few evocative hints. “It’s got more chords. And space shit,” is how Turner puts it.

When I turned 18, I felt I was grown up. Then when I was 21, I reflected, “Boy, I was just a kid then; now I’m grown up.” The same thing happened when I was 27. It wasn’t until I was in my early 30s that I realized it was a futile goal to have. You’re never grown up. We’re all still dealing with the same hopes, same fears, same dreams that we had as children.

Arctic Monkeys Track by Track album interviews
With each album release Arctic Monkeys have done an hour long album playback with a thorough track-by-track interview done by John Kennedy from Radio XFM.
These interviews provide valuable insights to the band's writing process, lyrics, song meanings and general info about the band at the time. The band talk about how they were feeling at the time they wrote the album and generally what was going on with the band at the time of recording.
They also provide hours upon hours of fun content! Yay!
I thought I would compile these interviews, the ones I could locate at least, as I figured others might find them interesting.
Enjoy!
Whatever People Say I Am That's What I'm Not - not available
They did an interview with John in early 2006, but it is sadly not available anywhere.
The station did do a 'making of documentary' about the album to celebrate the station's 10 year birthday, and showcased important albums during that decade, this one being the first. The documentary provides a sort of timeline of the band's early days and features interview snippets from the original interview the band did in 2006.
The documentary also features other musicians/journalists/radio personalities talking about the importance of the album. Including James Ford and Jim Abbiss, who produced the album.

Suck It And See - not available
They did record an interview with John, which was broadcast on the 31st of May in 2011 but it's sadly not available anywhere.
Radio XFM wrote an article about the interview, which featured a few quotes:
"The phrase Suck It And See is causing a stir in the United States especially. "They think it is rude, disrespectful they're putting a sticker over it in America in certain stores, big ones," Alex told Radio X's John Kennedy. The pair were talking through the outrage-inspiringly-titled new release track by track on X-Posure. They told John that they wanted to master how they would play the songs live before putting them down in the studio, and reckon it means more of a return to their debut, 'Whatever People Say I Am, That's What I'm Not'. "The first one obviously was done pretty much like that 'cause we'd been playing it around before we recorded it. That was something we wanted to try and do" Matt and Alex explained. "Most of the production side was done in London before we went and that allowed then sessions to be about getting the best recording, getting the sounds right." Suck It And See was produced with the help of producer James Ford, who also worked on Favourite Worst Nightmare and Humbug." [x]

arctic monkeys muses: alexa chung
Tumblr media
timeline: alexa & alex dated from 2007-2011.
alexa chung is an english writer, television presenter, model, & fashion designer. she has written two books & currently co-hosts the show next in fashion with queer eye’s tan france.
songs about her:
fire and thud: fire & thud is one of the first songs believed to be written about alexa. “if its true you’re gonna run away/tell me where, i’ll meet you there” refers to when alexa landed her own show on mtv & was relocating to New York. alex ended up moving as well in order to be with her.
suck it and see (the album): the entirety of sias is believed to be about alex’s relationship with alexa, so im just going to pick the most notable songs.
she’s thunderstorms: it was reported that this song was written during a “mad thunderstorm” in alex’s New York apartment that he shared with alexa. “here’s your host/sounds as if she’s pretty close” is almost definitely referring to alexa, who at the time was hosting her mtv show it’s on with alexa chung.
all my own stunts: yet another song written about alexa, the song is about alex moving to New York with alexa for her career, but he ended up being left alone in their flat & wasting a lot of time there while she was gone.
am (album): if suck it and see is the album for alexa & alex’s relationship, then am is the breakup album.
do i wanna know: after alexa & alex split in 2011, there were a few instances of them being spotted together in the years leading up to the release of am. the two were reported as still being friends, & alex spent a period of time on his own before he started dating arielle vandenberg later that year. “too busy being yours to fall for somebody new” & “crawling back to you” could potentially be about how they still got together for a little bit after the breakup & how alex was truly upset by it.
knee socks: another ode to a girlfriend past, this song is almost definitely about alexa because one of her wardrobe staples during their time together were her knee socks. “you & me could’ve been a team” shows that this was written about an ex, & “you cured my january blues” fits the timeline of alex’s breakup with johanna & how he met alexa a few months later in april. when he says “i got a feeling i might’ve lit the very fuse” he is referring to the show alexa co-hosted from mid-2012 to the end of 2013 ‘fuse news’. additionally, in alex’s infamous valentines day poem to alexa it is revealed that they didn’t get together immediately after they met, which fits the line, “you were a stranger in my phonebook i was acting like i knew”.
fireside: another song written post-breakup, this one is more subtle in its references to chung. “in my heart there’s that hotel suite/& you lived there so long/it’s kind of strange now you’re gone” refers to the fact that up until this point, alexa had been alex’s longest relationship, four years together, he had written songs about her, their relationship had inspired a full album, he had even moved to the us for her, so now that it’s over he’s not used to the void where alexa once was. additionally, the lyric “& your fuse is fireside” is another allusion to alexa’s show ‘fuse news’.

Stephen Graham. Are you friends with that guy? Because he’s been in a couple of your videos now, hasn’t he? He’s playing Al Capone on ‘Boardwalk Empire.’ Not too bad, innit? He’s got the American accent going…-He’s really good at accents.
