“I guess… it’s part of becoming… older?” he mused, shaking his head “Whisp… It’s okay, really… This is just another test by the yokai world administration and I’ll pass it with flying colours, really!” he laughed, trying to calm his friend and father figure down.

“They told me… he was needed elsewhere… That it’d be okay…” he was trying hard to appear strong as he shook his head. “Thanks, Whisp… for holding me like this…” he added, closing his eyes.

“I really appreciate it, you know…?” he muttered, giving the other the best smile he could which was admittedly still fairly weak.

“I needed it.”

“needed elsewhere... without giving the yokai himself a say, i presume. i’ll have a word with the administration--” deceptively calm tone juxtaposes his grit teeth and wild eyes, but everything grinds to a halt when keita thanks him. he-- thanked him... a defeated sigh escapes his lips.

“i’ll do everything i can to help you get him back. ...in the meantime, i can substitute. not all the time, of course, but-- i can be there at least somewhat.” he pulls away, only to put his hands on the boy’s shoulders and look him in the eye.

“you deserve a good butler.” no matter how much he may struggle to be one.

Almost immediately his smile fell, his heart shattering that much more in his chest, no what heart? He’d swear it’d ceased to exist in full.

“There won’t be two Whisper running around in the same vicinity and I’d be glad to go on a trouble hunt with you.” a hint perhaps at how much greater the trouble for him had become in full.

he knew it.

“...oh... i-- i’m so sorry, my dear.” empathetic sorrow tints his voice, gentle baritone wavering with worry. the poor kid doesn’t deserve this-- to have all this work placed on him and lose a vital support. he knows keita’s own whisper is much more important to the boy than he himself was to katie, so whatever took the yokai away must have been trying to be cruel. and thus, SORROW turns to ANGER... and INTOLERANCE.

“who did that-- who did that to you?? i’ll make them pay.” last sentence is spat in the midst of a protective snarl, and his grip tightens. when the papa lion is awake, he’ll protect his cubs with his life.
