Lejo of Wolt does not own a drafting table, but is beginning to think he should invest in one based on the sheer amounts of crap strewn across his workbench: books on Eastern woodworking tradition, notes from both his clients and most trusted advisors, and broad sheets of paper full of scribbled-out sketches. It's not a pretty sight, and he's been hunched over at this for so long he wonders if his back will ever recover.

The drawing stage is always the hardest, every design pulled from him like a tooth rather than flowing onto the page with all the ease one expects of an artist, but this one has proven especially troublesome. Babies aren't his forte, and for a few bells he was operating on the assumption that a crib was actually a cradle. Disabused of the notion after calling Skoen's pearl, at least he can say he has a rough structure in mind.

Either make it sturdy enough for generations or flimsy enough they can burn it the second the kid gets too big for it, had been her only helpful advice. When he'd called Rudi afterward, pinning his last hope on the insights of the only other parent he knows, he got told to make sure the rails are really high because Maja said that Refr tried to toss me out of our crib six times before we were a summer old!

It occurs to him that cribs seem to have a lot in common with cages; tiny prisons to stop babies from rolling away from their pile of cousins and siblings and into danger. It's enough to wrinkle his nose at, but if the Eryuts had been so imprisoned in Golmore then maybe he shouldn't be so dismissive. Especially when the comparison has made it easier to visualize the end product: measurements and ratios for something with a low floor, hip-high to an Au Ra, and square lacquered rails to make escape all the harder for an enterprising young kit determined to have an adventure.

Yeah, he can work with this. It'll take a little while, but then he's never been fond of rush jobs. And with how much time he's already spent on it this afternoon, and how his back's screaming at him for relief, maybe it's best to put that into practice. Tomorrow he'll finish up his drafts and get them ready to show his clients, but tonight, all he wants to do is unwind with a hot drink and some whittling in front of the fire.

Baatu and Zansei had said the kiddos could use more toys, right? May as well throw in one or two for free.

I love the concept of grave offerings. Like all the cultures across the world that have buried their dead with their own possessions, or things especially made for that. What an unique and universal human thing, to mourn the dead and think

"All I know of where you are going, is that I can't come with you now. But I think you would like to have this with you."

A long time ago, when the Eastern Gate still sat on the edge of the Wood, and before it had crumbled into ruin, there lived a Warder so old that there were none left alive who could add to his tapestry. It was said that he had the strength to wrestle a diresaur, the speed to run with coeurls, and the wit to foil a pack of hellhounds on the hunt. He could coax even the saddest of plants to life with but a whisper, call upon sprites of every element for aid, and pierce through the Mist with but a glance. All these gifts and more he used to protect Mother Golmore and her children, for all the untold centuries of his life, and his village knew nothing but peace.

Eventually, as happens to all who live so long, the Wood began to call to the old Warder, and he knew it was his time. He journeyed deep into the heart of the swamps, stripped bare of all belongings, and wandered alone under a starless sky until he could no longer remember the way home. Only then did he allow himself to rest on a small mound of earth in the middle of the marsh, for this was where the Wood had summoned him.

His sleep was long and peaceful, blanketed in a veil of Mist, and its power kept him safe from the beasts who might have taken him as prey. And as he lay there undisturbed, his body began to change. His claws sank into the earth and stretched toward the sky both, skin becoming twisted and gnarled as bark, covered in blankets of moss and vines that grew in place of his fur. He soaked up the lifeblood of the swamp through his roots until he towered above it, feeding upon it until he became the great tree we know today as Tepja, and it was in his boughs we were once foolish enough to make our home.
