haena pushed her bottom lip out in a bit of a pout, wrapping her arms back around yein in turn. she was so proud of this kid. she’d been quite a bit older than yein when they debuted– seeing that little girl grow into the strong and powerful woman she was today was incredible to watch. yein was truly a sister to haena, and she was so proud of her. and all she’d accomplished. 

she took a deep breath as she rested against haena’s shoulder, wiggling her arm around in the hug so she could wipe her eyes before her makeup got ruined, pulling away only slightly so she could look haena in the eye. “i’m so happy you’re here. this means so much to me.”

“the styling was cute! i know matty is a little upset she didn’t get to actually dye her hair that mint color, though,” giselle laughed. “you get bragging rights? my love and attention? a shout out on my socials for your next comeback?”

“oh, god-- it would look cute for the first week, but i can’t imagine that colour would take to hair long term. she might be better off,” yein snorted. “you’d shout me out anyway, unnie. you love me. and my music. you just can’t help it.”

“i bet if you ask they’ll let you do it! this is a nice big reunion, after all! i think it’d be all the more special if you did the choreo,” jinjoo said.

“i think so too. and it would be such a departure from my first run with reign. i never got to choreograph for us in the old days, even though i wanted to so badly,” she commented.

“ahh, you know, that could be funny,” jinkyung giggled. “i bet production could set something fun up with that. i know you were joking, but it’s good tv.” she took yein’s hand and gave it a squeeze. “it will mean so much to goeun. of course, because it’s korea, we have to frame it as just a fan thing, but she’s been so enamored with you since the moment she heard a reign song.”

“well, min is a good sport-- i’m sure he’d be down,” yein giggled. she squeezed her senior’s hand back, face basically a recreation of the 🥺 emoji. “i’m honored. that’s seriously so flattering. i would love to help make her day.”

“i’ve heard stranger,” yein retorted with a tiny smile. “should i get minseok’s approval? what’s the plan here,” she joked before shrugging. “that sounds really fun. and cute. i’d be interested.”

“this is going to sound a little strange, but please hear me out,” jinkyung began, a little smile playing on her lips. “one of my kids has a crush on you. just a little one, very innocent– the crush of a fan. but the producers want to explore it as an angle on the show. would you be alright with us using footage of you? or even coming to meet the child in question for a special episode?” she was careful not to say which of her kids it was– if the answer was no, she didn’t want to embarrass them. “of course nothing will happen beyond that, but we thought it would be cute for one of the kids to meet one of their favorite celebrities. and you’d get publicity from it too.”

“i’m excited too! i wonder what the choreography will look like…” she mused

“i’ve been thinking about that a lot-- i wonder if higher has a choreographer already, or if that’s something i can take on myself,” she said, thinking aloud. “i had some ideas.”

"please-- i’m honored to be working with you. it’s no coincidence that reign blew up the moment you and jinjoo joined,” yein retorted, taking matty’s hand and giving it a squeeze. “i feel very comfortable, thank you. and excited. it’s been a long time since i’ve been onstage with others who aren’t dancers.”

“i just want to say, it is such an honor working with you,” matika said, adjusting her mint green wig while her mua went to go find an extra brush. “this is huge. and it’ll mean so much to all the fans too. i really hope you guys feel comfortable and welcome.” @haenarv @yeinrv​

she’d been active since leaving reign-- very active. but this hit different. the aura was different. and it wasn’t just because she was sharing the stage. she was back with people she’d been performing with since she was fifteen, and while she’d adapted well to solo work, she adored reign. being with them again meant so much. 

yein turned and smile, eyes getting watery too as she wrapped her arms around haena’s shoulders.

it was an emotional affair. and something that couldn’t have happened any sooner– haena was overwhelmed now, and she could only imagine how overwhelmed she’d’ve been had they done this reunion before. she hadn’t been ready. she wasn’t even sure if she was ready now, to be honest. but it felt just as great as it did painful.

she wasn’t sure where the younger girls were– maybe off doing a special mc spot. but as the original four members of reign began getting ready for their stage in the mirror, haena covered her mouth with her hand and cried. // @yeinrv​ @rvbyulah​

“what do i win for being right? we made a bet, right?” yein replied sarcastically, holding back a giggle. “well, however many of them there are, they sure are loud. i’m glad i looked good in the music video, though-- the styling was cute.”

“well, you were right about people being mad,” gigi giggled, putting her arm around yein’s shoulder as they lounged in the greenroom. “i think the people who are mad are in the minority, though. most just think you look hot.” @yeinrv​

“what, and leave jei all alone with terra? hardly,” yein retorted, rolling her eyes and looking down at her pieces with a smile. she didn’t call him out on soju yet-- technically that worked-- but some of his other words toed the line. “i always thought it was kind of ironic that i left radioactive, and in turn, higher, only for you and hyosang and yuji to sign right next to my original group...” biting her lip to hold back a laugh, she used his upside-down E to spell los3r. “it’s really strange, but it’s fun. group promotions have changed so much since i left reign. but i much prefer play too.... and i don’t regret tricking you for a second. i’d do it again in a heartbeat. it was the only way.”

“so are you gonna leave new age to come hang out with all of us at higher now?” minseok joked, glancing over at yein from across the coffee table in their living room they had spread a scrabble board across. the board game had been yein’s idea, and even though min agreed to make himself practice english words, he kept sneaking in korean ones and hoping she didn’t notice. “ice cream is great, it’s cool seeing you and haena doing stages with reign again,” min said as he tried to sneak using an upside-down E for l3thal, “i think i have to like play better though, even if you tricked me into being on it.”

jinjoo blushed. “well….i could never come close to the original, but i try my best,” they mumbled. “thanks, unnie. that means a lot coming from you.”

“you’re being modest, but i’ll accept the compliment,” yein laughed. “i really can’t wait to be on a song with you. i’m excited.”

“especially from me. i’m super influential, didn’t you know?”

“well, i certainly know now! and i know not to get on your bad side, of course.”

“we’ll get them off your case– i promise. them being upset when none of us are just seems ludicrous,” byul sighed

“it seems ludicrous, but to be fair, some of your fanbase is nuts, byul. you can’t deny that. some of them take things real far,” yein pointed out

“i get that, but when you get to the level we’re at now, you can never make anyone happy. all we can do is give a statement on why the decisions we made were made, and hope most will understand,” giselle retorted

“says the woman who won’t get all the hate,” yein teased back, rolling her eyes. “yeah, okay. i’m in. i guess. i feel bad and don’t like it, but i suppose i’m in.”

“you do my parts spectacularly, by the way,” yein said with a wry smile. “but i do like hearing you sing more. reign wouldn’t be whole without your voice in it.”

“you know, seeing more and more altos in kpop has been really refreshing the past few years,” jinjoo admitted. “in my first groups, they always made me rap because my voice was deeper, even though i’m not a great rapper. and even when we cover old reign songs, i usually do yein’s old parts, because they’re more rap-centric. i dunno– i guess it just means a lot that more and more companies are letting good altos sing, and not relegating them to less important roles just because their voices are a little deeper.”

“now i’m gonna hold you to that. i want an all-suit comeback, and if i don’t get one, i’m boycotting.”

“well, i wouldn’t want a boycott on my hands, would i...”

“because, it’s a feature. this isn’t a song for five people. it’s a song split between reign as an artist, and you as an artist. you’re naturally going to get more of a feature,” byulah answered. “jinjoo is fine. i think she’s just more excited to be on set with haena more than anything.”

“you know that, and i know that, and we understand the logic, but i’m still worried about what your fans will say. i can see them getting really upset on jinjoo’s behalf,” yein pointed out.
