Vincent van Gogh, Self Portrait dedicated to Paul Gauguin
“Now I’ve just received Gauguin’s portrait done by himself and Bernard’s portrait by Bernard… My portrait that I’m sending to Gauguin in exchange stands up beside it, I’m sure… I had conceived this portrait as being that of a bonze… I’m very pleased to have these two portraits, which faithfully depict for us the pals at this time — they won’t stay like that, they’ll return to the more serene life. And I have the clear sense that the duty has been imposed on me of doing all I can to reduce our poverty.” Letter to Theo (October 1888)

Love is the best and most noble thing in the human heart, especially when it has been tried and tested in life like gold in the fire, happy is he and strong in himself who has loved much and, even if he has wavered and doubted, has kept that divine fire and has returned to that which was in the beginning and shall never die.
Letter #143. Vincent van Gogh to Theo van Gogh. Amsterdam, Wednesday, 3 April 1878.
