god i fucking hate all the like. casual nationalism in wrestling. it tends to get less attention than overt racism which is understandable but it’s still a problem & the fact that so often i see criticism of it dismissed even by people who are cricital of (overt) racism is infuriating. especially when it’s “subtle“. of course it isn’t actually that subtle, but it gets treated like it is & too many people only look for it in ways that seem bigger. but the fact is that smaller, less obviously egregious are no less dangerous. if anything i would argue that it’s *more* dangerous because people are more willing to accept it. boiling a frog, essentially. nationalist rhetoric in an imperialist* nation is always harmful no matter how small & insignificant it might seem.

*nationalism in colonized countries is a whole other thing with completely different dynamics & consequences so that’s not what i’m talking about here. i’m talking about countries like the us/uk/japan.

kota is an absolute brilliant storyteller, he can convey so much depth in only a few moves, and it constantly infuriates me how much people erase that because they don't like the story he chose to tell, they actually think he's stupid, or both

since i've seen people say kota's frustration with tanahashi seems sudden since they've just lost the tag belts + a few midcard preview tag matches, here's them arm wrestling months ago for njpw together.

it's not sudden. kota's been aware for months that he's carrying golden ace & been trying to push tanahashi to do better, but he hasn't. it's been months, tanahashi is still lagging far behind. kota is, understandably, frustrated & tired of tanahashi not pulling his weight, or even close to it. 

and tanahashi’s weakness isn’t the only thing kota is frustrated with here. at least not based on kota’s character as it’s been established over the course of his career, no idea how much njpw will choose to actually make explicit. 

this is a guy who has tried to change kota to fit his mold, his way of doing things, and kota's been trying to go along with it this past year but clearly isn't happy about it (his original g1 briefcase is painful to look at). this is also the guy who tried to undermine kota's relationship for his own gain, which happened just before kota signed his exclusive contract, a move that is much more in line with the tanahashi way of doing things than the ibushi way. 

of course kota wouldn't be happy having someone who has tried again and again to change him into someone he's not as his tag partner. kota hates being controlled so much he was happy to get a severe neck injury. add in the mismatched skill levels & it was always a disaster waiting to happen.
