It was supposed to be aspirational but from Niall’s new home in a dark and damp farmhouse on the outskirts of town, Niall couldn’t help but think it was futile. The clock ticks on.

could you recommend some of the books you enjoyed most this year? :) i'm looking for something new to read. have a lovely day!

Hi anon! I actually managed to read a good amount of books this year which is really good for me and mainly down to the fact that I got a kindle and now have a lunch break at work that is relatively undisturbed. So, here are the books I read over the course of 30 mins every day since March:

Starter for Ten by David Nicholls - really good and funny and based on University Challenge which I used to avidly watch as a teen with my mum, haha. Just a super good coming of age novel dealing with the class war in 80s Britain and literature and LOVE and stuff.

Saint Anything by Sarah Dessen - I’ve been a huge Dessen fan for approx 10 years now and was so excited for her new release this year, did not disappoint! All about being a teen and dealing with family issues that wind up excluding you, finding friendship and family in other people. Super gripping as well because there’s a CREEPY guy in it.

Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro - one that I’ve always meant to read and had heard next to nothing about, so it was all fresh ground for me. Technically a sci-fi novel but also about LOVE and FRIENDSHIP and FINDING FAMILY IN YOUR FRIENDS which is apparently my weak spot with books. Just the general … aesthetic the writing in this book conjures up really appealed and stuck with me.

Noggin by John Corey Whaley - he’s a relatively new author and this was only his second book (btw I fully FULLY recommend his first novel Where Things Come Back). This book is set in the not too distant future where medical science are able to freeze the head of Travis, the protagonist, to save his brain from the cancer infecting his body. 4 years later they re-attach his head to another body and revive him. It’s all about trying to reconnect with family and friends after they’ve moved on and he hasn’t because he is still the same age as when he “died”, and there’s a lot of Travis playing detective with himself and uncovering things that happened in those four years. (If I’m being honest, it lent itself a whole lot to the plot of my amnesia fic).

The Song of Achilles by Madeline Miller - GOD. If you are interested in Greek mythology then THIS IS THE BOOK FOR YOU but also even if you’re not, it’s just super interesting and HEART BREAKING. For me it was great to learn about a side of Greek mythology I knew very little about but it’s just a very moving telling of events that I’m still not over.

The Marriage Plot by Jeffrey Eugenides - I was given this in my final year of uni 2 years ago and never got around to progressing further than about 1/6th of the way through it due to uni commitments/essays/exams. Finally came back to it this summer determined to finish it. It’s set in the 80s and references Austen and Eliot a lot, basically about two boys and a girl stuck in a sort of love triangle just as they’re finishing college at Brown. All about Expectations and Desire and Finding Yourself and the meaning/validity of marriage as the end goal of male/female interaction.

Middlesex by Jeffrey Eugenides - think I was on a bit of a Eugenides hype and this one took me about 2 months to read as it is LONG but so amazing. It basically feels like 3 novels in one, and is about the protagonist Cal/Calliope discovering their intersexuality and tracing back through the family’s storyline and debating whether their actions and heritage are to blame for this. V interesting and Eye Opening.

The Raven Cycle by Maggie Stiefvater - I am currently 20% through the 3rd in the series but I got completely HOOKED on these books these last few months and it’s all because of @megalong and tumblr in general, lol. Teenagers! Boarding school! Hunting for Welsh kings! (Which itself has been really cool for me, as I’m Welsh and all these names and places keep cropping up and making me smile, haha). I love LOVE these books, fully recommend. You will shout and cry etc.

That’s about it for this year that I can remember! The next book I’m really excited to read is Carry On by Rainbow Rowell. Hope this has been helpful!

when did liam and louis get so close like I know they didn't like each other back during the x factor days but now they're clearly super close and best friends according to Liam so I was wondering what year they started to get really close???

This is actually a really interesting question, because from my perspective, I got into fandom in summer 2012 and basically anything from that point on I feel like you can argue is when liam and louis got really close? Because the thing about Liam and Louis is that they are constantly getting closer, like, ok, this was going to be a post about how every year can be the year where Liam and Louis started to get really close but then it got really, really long, SO: this is a thrown together post about Liam and Louis in 2012. First off, they went on SO MANY dates:

Sometimes their girlfriends come on those dates too, it’s casual. (god this was such a good ot4)

Liam and Louis have a reason for this:

Yeah, no, it’s a date. 2012 is  also when Liam got broken up with and Louis devoted all his time and energy to making Liam feel better and every day was pain

oh yeah and then they got tattooed together

2012 is also when Liam and Louis developed their very first early Things, which usually started as band jokes but then everyone else got bored with it BUT NOT LIAM AND LOUIS because they’ve never found a joke they didn’t want to drag out forever and ever

Also in between all of this Liam was saying deeply sincere and painful things about Louis and we were all dying all the time 

“Louis. I’m kind of like Louis’ sounding board now. If he’s ever gonna do anything random, he’ll ask me if he should do it. And I’m like ‘Yeah, go on’. So it’s often my choice or I’ll tell him to do things. So sometimes it’s me and people don’t even know.”

“If something bad happened to me tomorrow, Louis would be there for me 100 percent. People sometimes ask if I want to be a solo artist, but it just wouldn’t be any fun being on your own.”

Race Against The Sunset [Narry] 1/?

Summary: Niall has PTSD and Harry’s kid just wants to make him feel better. (Or another kid!fic that no one asked for.)

Niall’s hands are shaking. He’s sitting on a bench with his head tilted down so no one will notice that his eyes are squeezed shut, and his hands are shaking.

Niall was just heading through the park on an afternoon stroll, quickly stopped off for a coffee, and then someone had bumped into him. Hard, yes, and they didn’t apologize, and that shouldn’t be enough but it had sent Niall into a panic. It knocked the wind out of him, and it reminded him of that night, when the car first hit the water. The force of it was enough to give Niall whiplash.

Niall barely had enough time to set his coffee down and stumble over to a bench before he went into full panic mode and, now he’s still working through it, clenching his hands tight over his knees as he focuses on his breathing. 

It’s all he can do because he can’t struggle up enough nerve to pull out his phone and call someone for help, doesn’t want to look up in case someone is watching him.

For some reason, he keeps going back to his coffee, how it’s right there and it’s probably getting cold, or maybe someone’s knocked it over and now it’s spilling across the ground. It’s fucking coffee, but Niall can’t stop thinking about it.

“Are you okay?” That actually makes Niall open his eyes for the first time in ten minutes, and he looks up, because it’s the voice of a child, no more than seven now that Niall can actually see them. It’s a little girl, with soft brown hair and eyes too worried for such a little kid. She’s hovering by Niall’s arm, fingers reaching out like she want to touch Niall but she’s been told not to. “You don’t look okay, Mister.”
