Everyday Connections
In this rotation we had to create visual journeys, narratives etc using 5 photos that we had selected from a massive collection of photos that we had take over 3 weeks.
Over the course of 3 weeks, when I was matching and grouping photos up, I began to see a pattern on pairs and so I went along with the idea of romance. I used grouping methods such as colour, composition, objects etc.
The photos above were what I used in the final presentation and the the gif is a snippet of how I presented it.
I decided to present my photos on the stairs as perspective was a big part of it. I had cut my photos in half so that each element of the pair was split up. I stuck each side onto the floor on the steps so that the were not together. However, when looking from above at the right angle, the photo can be “come back together”.

An Unexpected Tail
His brows furrowed in frustration and a grumble of annoyance left his lips. The fisherman’s large hands paddled through the ocean water as he leaned over the back of the boat to squint out into the horizon. The open water was vast and wide, and he was fearful of it; its quiet and dangerous beauty emphasised his pang of desolation and starvation.
He slumped back onto his seat just as his stomach produced a rumble to rival thunder. Four days it had been since his last catch; four days since his last meal. By this point, he was wondering if he would begin hallucinating. Just as he was thinking this, he caught a particularly auspicious splash in the water out of the corner of his eye.
“Food?” he questioned aloud. The fisherman licking his lips and dove into action, grabbing the nearest rod he could find, and casting the line out to the ripples left by, what he hoped, was the biggest fish he had ever seen. The short battle that ensued proved his hopes wrong, telling him that it was hardly anything special, but it was still his only option. Harshly jerking his rod up to the sky, the prey was hooked on. He yanked once more on the rod, and a tiny, glittering black sea bass was pulled out of the water, flew through the air and landed right in his open palm, suspiciously already dead. The fish must have been so weak that the shock of being caught killed it, the fisherman mused to himself, and thought no more of it. As he stared at the tiny fish no bigger than the hand in which it sat, his feet led him to the kitchen at the front of his boat.
Working quickly, he descaled the dead fish, not giving a second of thought to the scales flying about and landing, glimmering, on his dull, washed-out skin. Haphazardly brushing off the few scales he could see on his arms, he set about filleting and chopping up the small fish, wiping his blood-stained hands on his shirt as he threw the fish’s head, body and bones into a pot of boiling water. He stood there, watching over his broth with unadulterated hunger and lust in his eyes, almost drooling in anticipation. Soon enough, he was ladling his meal into his bowl, and without waiting for a second longer, began to devour the soup.
After filling himself right up to the brim, he leaned back on his chair, resting his hands on his protruding stomach, humming in contentment. He gazed back into the pot to see that at least half of the broth was left for his to eat the next day. As he stared into its swirling depths and smiled at his own success, the fish’s head bobbed up to the surface, making him jump back in his chair, almost falling out of it. The fish’s beady black eye stared into his own, and he rapidly swiped it out of the pot and dropped it into the bin, never to be seen again.
He wiped his dirty hands on his chest once again, feeling satisfied with himself, but soon noticed the reappearing dryness of his mouth; despite having only just finished a meal made solely of water and fish, he felt even more dehydrated and hungry than before. The nausea spread through him, all the way down to his stomach. Coughing and spluttering, he rushed to the bathroom and held onto the edges of the sink as he retched without bringing anything up. He looked up at himself in the mirror and watched, astonished, as his lips dried out, splitting and bleeding, then the skin on his cheeks began to crack too. Fixated on his reflection and too scared to move, the fisherman noticed something glittering on the side of his neck, and went to pick it off. Gasping out and flinching away from the pain, he realised with the nausea returning, that the fish’s scale was attached to him. He turned to get a better look, but instead, his eyes landed on two bright red crescents beneath his ear, akin to a fish’s gills.
Before he could process what he was seeing, the boat lurched to one side, and, from behind him in the kitchen, he heard his pot and bowl fall to the floor and smash.
He ran outside to the deck of his boat to see what was happening, and saw the one thing that scared him enough to forget the scales and gills appearing on his neck: the eye of a big, dark storm heading his way. Already feeling the heavy sheets of rain on his back, the fisherman ran around the boat collecting his fishing gear as he went, with the aim of securing them below deck before the storm hit; but just as he reached out to grab his box of favourite flies, he slipped on the saturated wooden decking, slamming his head on the side of the boat as he fell to the ground. And there he lay, surrounded by his rods, his flies out of their box and strewn about, as his boat was thrown from side to side by the winds and waves, until the storm had passed.
Finally, the sunshine broke through the clouds, fighting off the last of the rain, shining its light onto the fisherman’s boat and belongings. Among the fishing supplies littered all over the deck was a pile of clothes, soaked in both water and blood, but no sign of the fisherman himself. Everything laid still, the world revelling in the calm after the storm; everything except the fisherman’s shirt, which had the appearance of covering a beating heart. The beating became increasingly frantic, when finally a small black sea bass escaped from between the buttoned-up fabric, flapping its way to the edge of the boat and jumping over the side.
As the black sea bass fell into the dark, welcoming depths of the ocean water, its only thought was, “I should not have eaten that fish!”

23-11-18  Storytelling (session 2)
-Stories are used to connect to people -Stories do not have to end neatly
In today’s class, we discussed some stories that we had read for homework. I chose to read Bullet in the Brain by Tobias Wolff and The Yellow Wallpaper by Charlotte Perkins Gilman. Bullet in the Brain was an interesting depiction of man who I thought was so bitter it became psychotic. He spoke and thought of things that were crude, provoking feelings of sourness. It was fascinating to discuss with the class, how Anders last thought as he died was of himself when he was younger and not his wife or child or his parents. It made me dislike the character more as it touched on narcissistic qualities which mirrored his arrogant behaviour in the bank where he was drawing attention to himself and other people putting them at risk. Some other students differed and thought that the author presented the character in a raw and truthful way. They explained how they liked the fact that Tobias Wolff didn’t sugarcoat the death. Wolff could have easily had Anders think of his “loved ones”, something that we would expect from somebody who was about to die. However, it was the opposite, which was a nice twist that made you rethink and evaluate Anders’ character. The character Anders was incredibly complex and I almost found the story frustrating to read however the author manages to captivate you and the strong emotions I felt towards the character caused me to want to read further. I enjoyed it very much.
The story The Yellow Wallpaper is a compelling story where the author tells us about the position of women and the culture behind marriage in the 1890s through the the main characters traumatic psychological journey. While reading, I found that the character had very obsessive traits. She had an attention to detail; not with an artistic eye but in a very straight forward way as she explains what she sees. She keeps on coming back to the yellow wallpaper and how she dislike it and as we progress further into the story, it is a subject that slowly takes over her mind. Through discussions in class we agreed that John is using her illness to control her and keep her locked away, almost taking care of her like a baby. The constraints put on the main character (the narrator) I think is what slowly drives her insane and by the end of the story we come to realise the author uses the wallpaper to mimic her and emphasise her insanity. The topic in which the author covered was interesting however this particular story did not give me “body tingles”. It may be because it was written in first person which made it difficult for me to have an overview on the whole story and situation. I’m not sure. It was interesting to discuss in class however.

What is it about a story that draws you in?
-Tone -Pace -Energy -Dynamic -Connection
We were asked to write a super short story with these aspects:
character - someone ordinary, a nobody Setting - a dull boring town Action - something has just happened. Something very big and it is going to or it has changed the life of the character.
It was unusual for me to wake up to a silent house. I pulled back my covers to find a dark figure in the room. The coldness of the gun pressed against my back ran shivers down my spine. I could hear my heartbeat in my ears.
A story writing exercise where we give an inanimate thing life/feeling: - I decided to choose the cut out eyes stuck around studio 1.
We see everything. Lights on or off. We are watching. People come and go but we are so still, we go unnoticed. We see your true self, at every angle. No matter how hard you try to hide.

An Encounter on a Lonely Road
Peter and Edna frantically collected the money they had hid in-between the ages of their books. They had been collecting for years for emergencies just like this one. Louise and Rose had been bundled up and made ready by Edna. They both knew that this was not any old trip. They were on the run and they had to keep the twins hidden. Peter and Edna had already lost their daughter. She had been ordered to be killed by the Higher Circle. An organisation that has taken over the Government to prevent overpopulation. A rule was placed that there could only be one new born baby in one household. Louise and Rose were twins and were born secretly, but the word soon spread and now the Higher Circle were after them.
Peter had previously worked in the military and knew of deserted road that could get Edna, the twins and himself out of town. He knew that Higher Circle would find out but the road would buy them some time. It was a long and dangerous journey but it wasn’t a choice if they wanted to save the twins and themselves.
Both Peter and Edna were carrying a twin. They had been walking for days and the road seemed never ending. Peter had lung cancer, that was why he was asked to leave the Army. It was terminal and he was no longer able to serve. The cancer had managed to spread to his throat and Edna could tell he was struggling to keep up. It had been three days and they had not moved much further. The twins were hungry and cold and Edna could feel the Higher Circle catching up to them. They had to rest that night, so they set up camp by the side of the road.
Peter and the twins were fast asleep. Edna could hear the struggling gurgles coming from Peter’s throat. She knew that this journey was going to be too much of a strain on his health. A tear rolled down Edna’s cheek as she kissed Peter’s head and put the gun to his temple.

On a full moon, when the clock strikes eleven, Enter the well, using a rope of exactly six metres, With your lover’s teardrop your eyelash, and a spoon, Slowly but surely enter the tomb. It will be dark, it will be scary,  but do it right and it will be over soon. Pour the teardrop into the spoon’s dip, and balance the eyelash on your bottom lip. The next step is to take a small sip and let the feeling of warmth run down to your fingertips. Now that this part has been done, all your lover’s feelings should be gone. You are now as free as bird, you can say that you have won. Go and find someone else,  someone that you can truly love.

Emotion: Drained
Taste - like a mouthful of dry sand. Drained is the taste of grit and dullness. Soggy cardboard.
Sight - Only seeing a black vacuum, an abyss. There is no end or beginning.
Sound - White noise. Or the high pitched noise that’s in your ears after a loud concert.
Touch - like gloop. Wading knee deep through think warm black tar. Or a dull pulsing pain throughout the whole body. Or the feeling of numbness you get on your hands when you rub your palms on carpet for too long.
Smell - chlorine. something that lingers. sour. it catches in your throat

The Leaf (a short story) by Moi
Now, you may think that this was just a normal leaf, but let me tell you Leafy was different, in ways more than one. Growing up, Leafy was from a big family tree. They never separated from each other. They stood tall and proud, green and never changing whatever the weather. Come rain, snow or wind, the leaves  all stayed together by mother nature’s bond. Held tall by an anchor deeply rooted in the ground. All leaves were content and could not imagine being apart from one another as they could not be able to survive on their own. However, Leafy wanted to know what life would be like away from everybody else. He had heard whispers and tales from the foxes that passed by. They spoke of a wondrous world that Leafy desperately wanted to explore.

Trace - great ideas coming in w/ the use of animation clips they used that were traced from footage
The group looked into: Moving Image Workshop -  they used Dragon Frame, Photograph stop motion sets w/ camera set ups, light tables, green screens for CGI etc.
Letter Press Workshop - Printmaking, etching, screen printing, risograph, lithography, etc.
Reverse - used footage from different workshops and to go back and forth through the process. The group looked into the Dark Rooms and Letter Pressing.
Turn - The group focussed on transformation and change when exploring this word. “Turning something into something else”. They looked into the pottery workshops with ceramics and worked on the spinning wheel where it turned, to create something. I really enjoyed the concept behind their research.
Echo - The group that explored this word worked in the Audio workshop at Kingston Hill Studio, played around and made a short piece of audio for the presentation. It was interesting to have them look into sound because it was different to the other presentations and I don’t think it was something that many people had considered.

- Our word was 'Join'. We focussed on the idea to unite, to bind and to come together. We looked into this physically with materials but also us as people coming together. We are from different backgrounds, living different lives. So we used this as our driving force. We wanted our own personal input by collecting pieces of paper e.g reciepts used in shops or wrappers and packages that are the forgotten parts of our everyday life giving these objects a sense of purpose. This is also just one of the many examples of how you can approach bookbinding and the ideas that it can explore.
- The sketchbook above is what we made in book binding using different materials that we collected as a group. We went through what we collected and selected what we thought would work best in the sketchbook.

Word given: Join
-to unite, to bond and come together
what to use: Book binding 3D materials workshop Moving Image workshop Photography workshop Printmaking Studio
Thinking about using mixed media? Look into sequences? e.g. animations are made up of images joining one after another.
-What is book binding? -Where is book binding? - Do you need to have an induction? - Are there people who can help you? - When are the opening times? - Are materials provided? -Are the workshops drop-ins/ walk-ins? - What other workshops are available? -What could we use book binding for?

20-09-18  Summer Project Review
Lucius - Lucius’ blog was created on tumblr and it was called “Ramblings of an Alien”. The character was a South Asian 19 yr old girl. The blog was “a day in the life” of a teenage alien living on Earth. There were visual elements on the blog where Lucius had created visual art of the character and her girlfriend. It was interesting to scroll through as it was a very good way to present a character. The fact that it was an actual blog added very relatable elements to it. Plus, being a south asian myself it was nice to see some representation in Lucius’ character.
George - George’s summer project didn’t have a blog but he focused on the narrative side of it and had a bunch of digital drawings to support the story of his character. It was incredibly entertaining as his character was not something that I was expecting. George’s story was about a bike, which had one wheel that was bigger than the other and it was the last bike left on the bike rack (suggesting that it was the one that nobody wanted). George portrayed the emotions of this bike incredibly well as he did not add any facial features to the bike at all. All emotions were portrayed through the piece of writing that he read and the detail plus compositional elements in his digital drawings. e.g the weather told us a lot about how the bike felt in situations etc.
Joe - Joe’s character was called Bradley and was a character that had life with mythical creatures like fairies. In Joe’s tumblr blog, he had adopted this collage style when posting photos. He had incorporated and stitched together photos of himself, landscapes and drawings. The mix of media added to the mythical aspect I think which I personally enjoyed. Joe played around with composition and scale which kept things interesting and playful.
Rina - Rina had developed a character called Agnes. An Ex-Colonel who had fought in the dark war. Rina had beautifully developed character who had a full backstory which was incredibly interesting. Agnes’ parents were actors and her sister was a dancer. She was 34 years old and had a girlfriend who was a werewolf. There were many many elements that were included in her story. It was incredibly detailed and busy which was interesting, however it caused me to not connect with her character. Magical powers was also a running theme in her characters blog. What I liked was the fact that Rina had different blog entries for different characters so that we could get another persons perspective. An interesting thing I picked up out the way that Rina worked was that she draws the characters first and develops a story from the outfit that they’re wearing.
[Gotta ask her for her name] - This character was called Mr Salty. The character design was the best! I did a quick little sketch of it. It was a fish business man living a human life. Kinda like Bojak Horseman, the character had a human body but the head was a fish head. Mr Salty had a family to support, a wife and a new born baby (that was fully human). The element of the fish head is what makes the  blog stories so interesting and entertaining, especially the fact that nobody questions the fact that Mr Salty is part fish.
Eliott - The character that Eliott created was a 17 yr old living in Japan. The blog that they created was very aesthetically pleasing which was also reflected in the lifestyle that the character had. Everybody in the village had apparently fled and so this 17 yr old was all on their own and was surviving by eating the veg from the gardens of other people. It was a blog of the characters life on their own. Elliott portrayed the characters life as peaceful and tranquil and not lonely at all. It was almost as if they enjoyed being alone. The blog had drawings of food that the character cooked and songs that the character was listening to. It was very mellow and sweet.
Brennan - The character that Brennan created was a time traveller from 2190. His character had a purpose behind his life which was attention grabbing. His character had come back to the past in order to buy music on the black market because in 2190, music was banned. It was a great story and I feel like elements of the character were inspired from himself, which was cool.
