my favorite paintings (as an art history newbie) part 2
The Two Crowns by Frank Dicksee (1900)

The Two Crowns is a painting by English artist Frank Dicksee.
It depicts a young king as he parades through the streets, showered in gifts and flower petals by his subjects, celebrating his glory. But the young king isn't focused on that. He cannot celebrate. On his left, he sees the shadow of his savior, Jesus Christ, nailed to the cross. The young king wears a crown of gold, while Jesus wears a crown of thorns. The two crowns.
This young king is realizing his own invalidity as king. Why should he be celebrated and worshipped instead of his savior?
The painting is 91 in x 72 in, painted with oil on canvas. It is currently held at the Tate Gallery in London, England.

Yeah, it's definitely a complicated thing
I call her "El" because that's the first time she had a name outside of the lab that wasn't associated with violence. "Eleven" feels wrong. "Jane" feels wrong. Both of those feel empty somehow.
A name is such a powerful thing. I wonder how she feels about each name she has. I know from experience that people who go through trauma as a child may change their name to something they choose.
My adoptive cousin is a survivor of CSA by her previous adoptive family. She changed her name recently because she doesn't want to be associated with a name that was given to her by her perpetrator.
I wonder what El will go by for the rest of her life.
Why do so many Milevens call El "Jane". I've only heard people call her that in the Mileven part of the fandom. It feels so off what's up with that?

my favorite paintings (as an art history newbie) part 1
Clytemnestra by John Collier (1882)

Clytemnestra (also called Clytemnestra After The Murder) is a work by English painter John Collier.
The painting depicts the Greek mythological figure Clytemnestra, the sister of Helen of Troy, after she has murdered her husband, Agamemnon, in revenge for him sacrificing their youngest daughter, Iphigenia, to secure success in the siege of Troy. Agamemnon returns home with the captured princess Cassandra, but an enraged Clytemnestra murders them both. This is the version that Collier chose to paint, coming from Aeschylus' play, Agamemnon, and depicted in plays by Sophocles and Euripides.
However, the other/original version paints Clytemnestra in a less favorable light. Originally, Clytemnestra takes a lover while her husband is away at war, a man named Aegisthus. Upon Agamemnon's return, the lovers murder him together.
In the previous iteration, some cite both Iphigenia's death AND Clytemnestra's affair as joint reasons for the killing. I think the original was pretty misogynistic, though.
What I love about this painting is her facial expression. Collier's talent is incredibly clear here, as her face communicates many different emotions, even though she is still. Betrayal, rage, guilt, grief, sadness, I can see all of those in her face.
Collier's work stands out as it depicts her as rather androgynous, intimidating, and menacing, traits not often associated with women during the Victorian era. Some believe that Collier's inspiration came from when he saw a performance of Aeschylus' play at Oxford University in 1880, where a male student played Clytemnestra. It is also interesting to note that Collier was very interested in archeological accuracy, so it is very likely that the clothing, weaponry, and architecture is historically accurate to the time period.
The painting is 94 in x 69 in and was painted with oil on canvas. It is currently displayed at the Guildhall Art Gallery in London, England, where it has remained since 1893.

Y'all I had a weird dream the other night that different celebrities were endorsing either M&Ms or Skittles and it was as controversial as politics. Like Taylor Swift endorsed Skittles, Pedro Pascal endorsed Skittles, etc. All my faves endorsed Skittles. Then, I kid you not, my fellow Swifties,... Joe Alwyn endorsed M&Ms.
And the funniest part is.. I don't like Skittles.

Damn. I like this movie more now.
anyways i just love the way kpop demon hunters stayed true to its roots in korean/asian culture, especially around the core theme of community vs individualism
the fact that it's not a single chosen one but a group of three
the fact that the honmoon is not powered by the hunters themselves but by the energy and love of the fans
the fact that gwi-ma turns people into demons by promising that he is the only one who can help them when he is in fact reliant on his army of demons to collect souls for him
the fact that "your idol" is about surrendering yourself to a single higher power while "golden" is about soaring to new heights together
the fact that gwi-ma preys on people's individual insecurities and shame to get inside their heads while rumi, mira, and zoey set them free in the end by encouraging them to embrace their differences and reminding them that they're not alone
the fact that you can see the audience cheering individually and even pushing into each other to get closer to the stage during "your idol"
while they're linking arms and cheering together and hugging during "what it feels like"
i have not seen the live action lilo and stitch but it feels like that movie sits on the opposite end of the spectrum from kpop demon hunters as a case study for how to tell a story in way that is culturally authentic and still resonates with a broader audience
and i think given that the core theme of the movie is all about community over individualism, the ending, particularly as it relates to rumi and jinu's budding romance, is really the perfect culmination of that broader theme
rumi and jinu's connection has all the hallmarks of that all-encompassing, all-consuming, borderline co-dependent first love where you keep your relationship a secret and sneak out of the house to meet up and feel like the other person is the ONLY person who really gets you
i'm the only one who can understand you, i'm the only one who will love you is the kind of thing that sounds romantic when you're 16 until you get older and realize how toxic it actually is and i love that the movie counters that in "what it sounds like" with rumi realizing that she had that love and support all along from her girls, and later, from the fans who continue to cheer them on through their comeback
it's about connection and sisterhood and love and sharing your fears and lifting each other up and becoming stronger and better together
and as compelling as i found rumi/jinu and as much as i would like to see their relationship explored more in a sequel/series, i just really love that this movie, which is clearly targeted at young women, ends on the message that romantic love is not the end all be all, that friendship is just as important if not more so than a romantic partner, that single women can lead successful, fulfilling lives, that true happiness and freedom start from within
it's crazy that this message still seems revolutionary in 2025 but given the current state of the world, it feels more necessary than ever

I just watched K-Pop Demon Hunters, not realizing I had heard someone sing Golden on YouTube shorts awhile ago, but I had misheard the lyrics as "Now I'm shining like I'm Barnaby!"
And I went "who tf is Barnaby?"
