Group Presentations

As the end of the semester approaches, one thing is always bound to happen and that’s group presentations. The time you show what you have been working on all semester long in about 20 minutes or less. Over my experience at Bloomsburg University I have idenfied 5 key factors to presenting group work.

1. Speak loudly. 2. Be calm. 3. Be prepared (note card). 4. Don’t read directly off slides. 5. Confidence and comfort from outfit.

NBA Playoffs

The NBA playoffs are here and upsets are already occurring. Can the 8 seeded Chicago bulls defeat the number one seeded Boston Celtics? Upsets are more likely to happen in college basketball. However, the likelihood it happens this year in the NBA is high because of veterans like Dwayne Wade. #nba #upsets

Job Interviews

Confidence and preparation is key when preparing for a job interview. Your confidence will shine through and show that you know you can be successful at that job. The abilities and experiences you have been through made you who you are today. Community outreach, extra skills and qualifications only add to your resume and can impress a potential employer.

Preparation is the necessary research done both on yourself and your potential employers. For instance, one time I was asked to recite a companys core values. Knowing what your employer is going to ask will give you the ability to think back to what you researched and answer competently. In conclusion, these elements can help you get the job from your potential employer.

National Championship

The two teams are in. North Carolina versus Gonzaga. One NCAA powerhouse and another team taking aim at winning it all. North Carolina is experienced in getting this deep into the tournament, however Gonzaga is known as the best college team in basketball right now.

Who will win it all? Tomorrow night is sure to be an exhilarating game as both sides are looking to add prestige to their University. Last year, Villanova’s Kris Jenkins solidified the national championship with a buzzer beater three to lift Nova to champions. NCAA tournament games never fail to amaze and i’m sure tomorrow will be no different.

Business Blogging

For this weeks blog post I took the time to read an article which provided me with useful information on business blogging. Sharing content while being clear and concise with your goals is important. As well as these tips, another one I found can help me with my writing is providing a useful angle that the audience can relate too.

What draws you in as a reader? When creating a post, I always try and think of ways to bring in my audience using knowledge on a topic and content that is interesting or relate-able. Writing a post, business related or not, should always begin with some simple inspiration. I try and use the world around me and look into subjects i’m interested in such as marketing, communications, sports and the media. Often times becoming inspired takes some time, however once you can harness that inspiration ideas will start to flow and the possibilities can be endless.

March Madness

It’s that time of year again, March madness. The month where college teams compete to see who will come out on top of the four divisions. This year, many upsets have occurred, including last years’ champion Villanova. My bracket this year hasn’t been as impressive as it has been in the past. 

This year, my pick is Kentucky to take the championship. Many teams will prove competitive including Kansas, North Carolina, and Duke have equal chances of going on a deep run.

Who do you have winning this year? Upsets make watching every game interesting and exciting. Anything can happen and I look forward to watching the excitement that is March madness.

Spring Break

Where are you going for spring break if anywhere? This week lots of young Americans are going to places like Mexico and Florida to enjoy some warm weather. Having no spring break experience I can say that I am not sure what the hype is surrounding other than the weather. 

As the second half of the semester is approaching, some goals and objectives need to be set. As stated in class these goals should be SMART, specific, measurable, realistic, and timely. To achieve these goals I need to put in the necessary work to end my four years at Bloomsburg University on a high note.

Some of my goals include:

1. Deans list for the second semester in a row.

2. Get accepted into three graduate programs.

3. Explore the job market.

To reach my goals I know I have a lot ahead of me. In such a short period of time I will be on my own and face many challenges. I look forward to persevering through whatever life throws at me.

Marketing Week

The end of this week caps off what was marketing week through the American Marketing Association better known as AMA. As I have recently picked up a minor in marketing, this subject has become something I am increasingly interested in. Advisers, school administrators, and perspective members are just a few of some of the types of people partaking in this week.

Speakers are even given the opportunity to showcase their most spectacular speakers. Bloomsburg University was one of the schools to participate with two key note speakers this week. Speeches can be about networking, branding yourself and even how to polish your elevator speech. 

Entering the professional world of communications and marketing these are valuable skills to learn about.

CPEC Career Fair

As graduation inches closer each day, developing a career plan is important. Taking steps such as visiting career fairs, professional development centers and registering on sites such as indeed are essential. As a senior Mass Communications major, I need to separate myself from the competition and focus on my skills. Finding my niche in the work place will take time however finding my strengths will be a good start.

This week I had the opportunity through Bloomsburg University to attend the CPEC career fair in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. I was able to speak to perspective employers such as Northwestern Mutual, Enterprise Financial, and Robert Half. 

Having this opportunity provided me with valuable experience talking about my professional experience, education, and internship. I was able to accumulate ten business cards of prospective employers to follow through with. This experience provided me with job interviews as well as a way to learn more about myself as a professional. I would recommend this to any college senior looking to enter the workplace after graduation.

NBA All Star 2017

Social media had it’s hands full this weekend with the annual NBA all star game. Players such as Kristaps Porzingis, Karl Towns, and Klay Thompson are sure to impress in their respective challenges. Social media has even played a huge role in this years event as viewers can vote for their MVP of the rising stars challenge. Jamal Murray finished his impressive outing with 39 points making him a clear choice to the public. 

Another social media technique was shown in the dunk contest as DJ Khaled took a “selfie” while Clippers center Deandre Jordan completed a dunk over him. It will be interesting to see in years to come how social media plays into these respective all star events. As new ways to communicate emerge, more people will be able to stay tuned to their favorite events in a number of different creative ways.

Wix Is a Useful Tool Today

Today, many young students such as myself are using Wix for a number of different site creations. Having my own experience using this website creator, I have found it to be extremely user friendly. As a Mass Communications major taking public relations classes, this site made it easy for me to create a full year public relations plan. I chose to create a plan on the Philadelphia Sixers during a year in which they were struggling mightily. Creating separate web pages and categories such as history, statistics, and team photography gave me some experience on the site. This will help to begin my semester using this familiar tool.

I have also begun creating a personal e-portfolio using Wix. I have found that this site is the easiest to navigate and edit to create a fully functional website. I have included separate pages such as my resume, internship experience, related coursework and more. This website will give my future employer a tangible look at some of the work I have done and have been a part of here at Bloomsburg University.

Wix has even stepped up in the marketing world with their new Super Bowl advertising campaign featuring Jason Stathom and Gal Gadot. I personally was surprised as this site doesn’t normally advertise on a large scale. I was happy to see what they came up with as a result of their marketing plan because it was creative and featured some of my favorite stars. 

I hope to see Wix in the future keep coming up with creative campaigns because this one was a hit among many. I look forward to working with the website this semester and am excited to see what’s in store.
