Assessment 2
700 word Statement
Q: The word glitch refers to an unpredictable irregularity in a system—digital and analogue alike. Explore the creative possibilities of glitch.
In the last assessment I explored human error to represent glitch in a creative way. My final project is a follow up from assessment 1 of physical human glitch but, this time I explored mental glitch. Mental glitches or mind glitches refer to a “temporary spacing out, or lapse in judgement where one makes error in thought or analysis”, and I wanted to creatively explore this through combining the digital and analogue mind. This meant that before starting the final project, I already new that I wanted to utilise a video format to do with glitch, in order to represent the human mind going though a temporary malfunction and irregularity.
My final project was mainly influenced by a psychology study, Brewer and Treyens (1981) that I had previous knowledge about. This study was conducted to see if whether a stereotypical schema of an office would affect memory recall. To me, this was an interesting concept of mental glitch and it built my idea for my final project, to create a sequence of someone recalling an object that they have misplaced. I was really interested to explore this idea, as someone who loses things very often my self, such as last week when I left my wallet at a cafe. The aim of this project was to create a sequence of our mental thought process when we tend to forget things. For example, one of the first things people do whey they misplace an object, is they try to retrace the places they have been to and attempt to recall where they put it last. This is an interesting concept of mind glitch, where we picture a sequence of places we have been to in our head. Hence, I thought it would be interesting and creative to express this visually using a technological digital glitch method to represent a malfunction in the human mind. Although this type of mental glitch is common to picture in our head, this is definitely not something we see visually which makes my project unique and interesting to explore.
In order to create a project that was relatable to everyone, I asked my friends and family what things they constantly tend to forget or misplace in their daily life, and incorporated these in my work. The most common things people listed were, phones, car keys, opal card, what day it is and a wallet. In order to construct this project creatively I combined the office like setting from the study Brewer and Treyens (1981) with the list of objects misplaced in daily life that I created. My initial idea was to take photos of the misplaced objects in common places I tend lose and find, then glitch the object. However, because the settings were all different it made the project look a bit messy and did not portray the idea of memory recall clearly. Upon further research, I came across a photographer Sabato Visconti who had a series of photographs under a similar topic to mine, remembering machines. In his work, he used the method of cropping the same photo into different sizes and rearranging them to give a glitch effect. The method behind Visconti’s work was simple, but clear and so I thought instead of using different settings for my project I should have one main setting. This ended up being my desk, which acted as the background for the objects being glitch to be placed on top of. Having on simple background, made the concept behind my project much clearer.
I made the videos of objects going through glitches in Adobe After Effects, using the old television effects and presets provided. At first, I struggled to create this moving glitch effect, but as I kept experimenting my skills became quite advanced and eventually was even able to add colours red, green and blue that really represented digital glitch. Overall, my project is important in creatively demonstrating the process of mental glitch related to memory recall in a visual aspect. I believe that I have created a project that challenges the common concept of glitch art which is commonly related to error in technology.

Assessment 2
Experiment 1
For my final work I want to create something to do with video glitch, so here I am just experimenting on what I can create through Adobe After Effects. At this stage I haven’t finalised my idea for what I want to explore in my final work, but I’m hoping to come up with things as I keep experimenting.

Assessment 2
Brainstorming Ideas
Towards finishing assessment 1, I was interested in the idea of physical human glitch. So in this second assessment I wanted to create a work to do with mental glitch. Furthermore, since the first assessment was quite restricted in terms of having to make a A2 poster that could be pinned up, I want to create something to do with a video.
Mental glitch ideas:
Forgetting things
Memory loss
Memory loss due to PTSD
Deja Vu
Dream sequence
Memory recall

Statement
Q: The word glitch refers to an unpredictable irregularity in a system—digital and analogue alike. Explore the creative possibilities of glitch.
When I first encountered this question, the first thing that came to my mind was the glitches that often occurred in old televisions(CRT Television) as a symbol of disconnection. I thought that I could perhaps, explore the creative possibilities of glitch using different methods other than just digitally. Hence, experimented with human error such as, distraction, lack of awareness and fatigue. I thought human error kind of reflected concepts of a digital glitch.
In the first few experiments I wanted to explore how I could show glitch through photoshop. I considered the primary concept of glitch, temporary malfunction that causes distortion and experimented on expressing this idea. Thus, I carried out a series of experiments where I either blurred or pixelated photographs to make the original image unclear. The results from these experiments reflected the concept of glitch well, but I thought it lacked in creativity as I was purposely representing this. Therefore, I wanted to explore the sudden effects of glitch and through further research I came across the works of Sabato Visconti, who largely influenced me to develop my final poster. Visconti’s works gave me the idea to creatively explore glitch through a series of errors that will make me produce unpredictable works.
With the start of this idea, I carried out experiments that were going to give me unpredictable results. I began this by experimenting with physical human glitch, in other words I utilised the concept of human error such a distraction and lack of awareness to create error in my works as seen in experiment 4 when I was trying to trace a photograph whilst someone was bumping me. Furthermore, I combined concepts of digital and human glitch in one of my last experiments where I drastically moved a photograph inside the scanner to show glitch.
Therefore, for the final poster I wanted to produce a work with an unpredictable end result so I overlaid all the experiments to produce glitch in a new creative way. My poster incorporates  concepts of both digital and physical/analogue glitch, but just by looking at it you can’t tell what is happening  which represents the concept of glitch well. The irregular method utilised throughout developing this poster was my method of creatively exploring glitch.

FINAL A2 POSTER
Tumblr media
This is the final poster I produced. As I was carrying out different experiments I found that the underlying theme was that I wasn’t ever going to be aware of the end result. Hence, for the final poster I overlay all the experiments to make this poster. The poster includes various creative methods of editing from, digital - Photoshop to using the human hand.

Experiment 6: Developing final poster
Tumblr media
So far I think experiments 2 and 5 were most successful, but I realised I hadn’t played with much colour so did one more experiment.
Personally I was most satisfied with the result of this experiment, as I thought it represented glitch very well.

Experiment 5 - Digital glitch
Tumblr media Tumblr media
In experiments 3 & 4 I thought the final results lacked in creativity, but I wanted to continue exploring the idea of lack of awareness and physical movement that causes unpredictable glitches. Therefore, in experiment 3 I drastically moved the photograph around whilst it was being scanned to produce a creative work. The results from this experiment turned out extremely cool, and the irregularity in the two trials showed interesting results.
Overall, I think this method will be something to consider for the final poster. I want to explore the creative possibilities of glitch through overlaying different results of a glitch to produce a work where I won’t be aware of the end results in the beginning. (basically develop a work that isn’t exactly planned)

Experiment 4: Physical glitch
Tumblr media
Again I experimented with physical glitch, this time by trying to trace the outlines of the image whilst someone bumped me. This glitch was happening by human common error when having lack of awareness.

Experiment 3: Physical glitch (human error/glitch)
Tumblr media
In this first image I experimented with physical glitch by making someone move my arms around whilst I was holding the printed photograph tightly. I attempted to scrunch the paper up, but because I had no control as the person manipulating me tried to separate my arms apart the paper ended up tearing in some of the folded parts.
