“it–” the laugh comes with a wheezing delay, and he waves his hands. “wait, no - not like - ahh, it’s just when people disturb my sleep sometimes i get really… like, you know, when you’re tired, and it’s just…” okay, his explanation is going nowhere, and keyu has to pause and gain enough self-awareness to realize that he’s trying to justify biting people. his head hangs in slight shame, though he’s still laughing. “i promise i won’t bite you if you wake me up, though. probably… i mean,” he shakes his head, raising a finger, “not probably. definitely.”
anran is correct in all ways; he hums in agreement as he listens to them, feeling quite justified all of a sudden in his answers. “right,” he says. “food preferences are important.” and her ideas, save for the midnight stargazing, strike a comforting chord. keyu finds himself nodding. “yeah, walks are really nice… and museums…”
he’s watched movies in the theater with friends a scant couple of times in the past - sometimes with his parents. keyu is one who falls on the silent side, especially if the movie is good, even sometimes when the movie is really bad. the exception lies in the horror genre, but he tends to avoid that like the plague unless absolutely forced to, or if the plot is particularly interesting “i won’t make you watch movies with me, then. i don’t talk,” he laughs. “unless there are jump scares… do you like horror movies, anran?”
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ anran listens to his statement with interest, gripping onto each word in order to understand keyu’s perspective. but it’s quick for her to conclude, and she can tell from how he laughs he’s realizing too, how there’s no explanation that’d suffice. the conversation topic is odd after all - no way out of this rabbit hole he fell into. they can’t help the slight smug expression dancing on their face, the hilarity so clear throughout their body language.
they lean forward sufficiently so they can reach up and use their hand to ruffle the other’s hair. it’s fondness. a bit of amusement, then confirmation too with a firm nod. ❝ alright. if that ever happens, i’ll remind you every moment i can. ❞ they simper as they retract their hand. ❝ kidding! i know you don’t mean harm. ❞
aran doesn’t seek verification, but it’s nice to have their thoughts validated. sometimes they direct towrds the hopeless romantic route by mistake. with it their expectations end up in some weird corner. they can promise they’re never the sort of person who’d suggest for scenes to be acted out but, maybe they hold specific ideas in mind.
❝ i think you’ll get annoyed by me then. ❞ they chuckle. ❝ i’m not a sport commenter but! i ask questions occasionally. ❞ the question makes her tilt her head to the side in ponder. ❝ depends. not a big fan of ones that are like a lot of action without a narrative. but if there’s a storyline or a plot twist? count me in. little me learned enough from things like final destination. guessing we have to be careful for you if we ever watch horror movies? ❞

————— ˚。 ・゚゚ for a few minutes, anran doubts their own suggestion. she agrees aika brought up an excellent point. they’re still hovering in the afternoon. even if it’s the late afternoon, with the incoming spring and eventual crescendo into summer, the sun fades later. they’ll be lounging around for a while. but when she ponders it over, she’s confident with her choice, and she nods at the other girl.
❝ yea! i know we’ll have a magnificent view of the sky from here. for the sunset and for later at night. it’s the perfect place to set up camp and relax. ❞ she gives a convincing nod. ❝ but it’s not as if we’re stuck here. ❞ they reach forward for the other girl’s hand, pulling them close with comforting pats. ❝ we can still walk around the area for a bit. i just don’t think we should go too far in case we can’t come back in time! like before, we’re too tired. ❞
anran’s made that mistake one too many points for her to have any remote interest in making it again. sore legs and a lot of slapped salonpas seemed worth it the first few times, but the blisters afterwards always reminded her that was a lie. so they’re hoping that this convinces the other with no regret - but feel a sliver of guilt.

@yhseojun said “you brought floaties?”
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ ❝ they’re adorable! ❞ anran is quick to defend her choice, holding the floaties close to her in a a strong hug. ❝ tell me, when have you ever. ever. ever! seen a sea otter floaties before? ❞ they pull the floaties away from them, using one hand to clutch them tight and the free hand to motion towards them in a circular motion.
she knows she’s right - or at least she believes with a lot of conviction she’s correct. they never used floaties even once in their life. they got tossed into the shallow end of the pool by their parents. then as their father and mother offered convincing words, anran tried to float. then the paddling turned into swimming. after a few lessons later on they became good at it, a flawless front crawl they are fond of showing. that’s where they stay even now.
but anran isn’t immune to cute stuff. not at all. when she saw the rare floaties, she knew she needed to have it. even if they didn’t need it. they carried it around more for a decoration than for anything practical. but they’re ready to bring up a random excuse to conceal that bit of knowledge. ❝ plus the waves are dangerous out here! maybe they’ll come in handy. ❞

@yhjuno said “you went into the forest alone?!”
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ ❝ yes. i know it wasn’t the smartest thing to do... i’m sorry. ❞ the apology is quick to slip off their lips. their face contorts in apology. folding her hand across her lap, she bends forward into a repentant bow. ❝ it was dangerous to go out in the dark. ❞ they admit. but then they stand up, stance form and expression determined. ❝ but i won’t apologize for being worried about those baby birds. ❞
earlier that day, the two of them had been wandering off-trail, feet trailing through unmowed grass that tickles the bottom half of their legs. together, they stumbled on a fallen nest knocked down by the wind the night before. the baby birds seemed unharmed on the surface and so they left them there. but anran worried when she sensed a gust of wind again overnight and had rushed over to build them a shelter. turned out the two chicks found shelter among the tree routes.
it’s good they’re safe. but now she had a scratch on her forehead as a souvenir. which juno noticed. even though anran tried their best to cover it with makeup and also to stay clear of his path. ❝ they were unharmed though. but i still haven’t seen mama and papa bird. ❞

@yhsan said “i wish we were allowed to feed the koi fish.”
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ anran takes a second to break her gaze from san, glancing down at the pond instead. she’s come around this area so often that she’s labeled some fishes with her own nicknames. they doubt there're names for the fish by any of the workers taking care of them, so they took the time and also took the time to figure out which one was more aggressive and which one was more friendly. but they haven’t been able to offer care towards the fishes, knowing it’s not allowed. but it’s tempting.
san echoes the temptation and she’s glad she’s not alone. a comforting confirmation - it makes them feel less guilty about having those thoughts each time they walk into the area. ❝ same. don’t they seem so hungry? ❞ she points at how they come to the surface, mouth gaping open and then close once more. they hover around the duo. ❝ they have gills, they don’t need to do that to breathe... i think. ❞ she’s only read it somewhere when she was little, the memories having faded. after looking at them for a few more minutes, she looks back at san.
❝ i have a question for you. do you have a favourite koi? ❞ it’s an out of the blue question, but also not one at the same time. inevitable for everyone to have favourites. she has one too when she glances over, but she’s never dropped the subject on anybody else. until now.

@yhseona said, “haven’t we passed that handmade candle place twice?”
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ ❝ did we? ❞ anran pauses in her tracks and frowns at the allegation. not because they disagree - things are always shuffling around in this area. one day a stall could be in a certain place, then another the next day. they could get lost trying to head to one place, now that it’s shuffled somewhere else. but they didn’t think they were going to get lost this quickly, and a frown appears on her face.
it only lasts a second. then she gives a sheepish laugh, running her hand through her long brown tresses. ❝ you know what i think? ❞ there’s a small mischievous smile dancing on her bright expression. ❝ it’s a sign. maybe we should get something from there. let’s go! ❞ they reach their hands forward to grab the other girl’s wrist and pull her over with a gentle tug.

upon hearing the question, inna pondered over it for a couple of minutes. the temptation of going home strong but, at the same time, she realised she hasn’t even had the chance to see the flowers and, despite the exhaustion, she didn’t want to miss it either.
“sure” inna responds, glancing at the servers that were still cleaning up. “i’m sure they can handle the rest themselves… and, if they don’t, well.” the woman made sure to say this loud enough for them to hear, and the glance they sent each other almost made her cackle devilishly. “can we get some food and drinks, too? i’m getting tired of only drinking tea these days.”
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ since the moment she entered the teahouse, saw the bustling customers, and the rushing workers all cramped into the area - she only had one idea in mind. in an instant, anran runs to the closest familiar face and asks how they can help. the aid, which was supposed to last only a short while soon stretched into hours. they entered the afternoon when the sun was still high in the sky and now looking outside, what greets them is a sky of fire instead of gold. the early evening arrived at the same time as freedom.
❝ they can handle themselves. ❞ anran assures, reaching her hand over with a fond pat on the back of the woman’s hand. confidence clear in her voice, she believes what she’s saying. they know the workers decently, nothing like spending a few hours in shared sufferings. but jokes aside, it’s because they also know many from beyond work and they know they’re good people at heart. ❝ it’s time for the hardest worker out of all of us to take a break. ❞
anran spent the day running around, taking orders. but they’re not the big person. the leader keeping everything together. if the pressure on her was big - it must be infinite for inna. ❝ yea! i think it’s time to replace your tea filled blood with proper nutrition. ❞ they joke with small laughter, standing up to leave the table. as if on cue, their stomach lets out a small grow and they laugh once again.
❝ seems my stomach agrees! ❞ she chirps, grabbing her bag and slinging it around her shoulder. they put on their sweater as they make their way towards the entrance, ready to greet the cooler outside world. ❝ did you have anything you really want? galbi? bulgogi? pajeon? i think i can eat anything and everything at this point. ❞

“should we take this to the police station? they’ll know what to do.”
“let’s make some cookies for the fire department!”

“i don’t think fishing is going to work on the beach…”
“you brought floaties?”
“i don’t know how to swim.”
“haven’t you see jaws?!”
“why are you drinking something warm on the beach…”
“the beach is closed… let’s go anyway.”
“the beach is closed… now what?”

❝ well, i do like myself a good drink to energize my soul! ❞ anran tries to make the situation better by cracking a small joke. it's not seojun’s fault the vendor conned him. or conned might not be correct - he missed the between the line memo. regardless, he didn’t know; the vendor knew, and it took a good sip from them to learn what the mixture included. ❝ just i wasn’t expecting to start so early. ❞
at his offer, she tilts her head to the side for a good second to think. ❝ that... isn’t necessary... but! it’s a good idea! i think we should take something to wash down the liquor. what do you think? ❞ there’s that whole saying of never drinking on an empty stomach, so in reverse maybe if they filled themselves up then they won’t even feel slightly tipsy. after all, they don’t know how much alcohol’s in their drink. ❝ what do you think about some chicken with our fake tea? ❞

fortunately, aeran did not sleep through her second alarm and managed to leave her house just in time. with a bit of speed walking, she was soon to pass through the stalls and farms, and she was not even surprised to see some of them were already open for business. especially, elders of the town seemed to have the habit of starting their days early both for locals and tourists. some of them even recognised her as the daughter of beekeeper han and attempted to make her take something for breakfast. ⎯ hence, by the time aeran arrived at the bus stop, she had a bag in her hand, where the friend of her mother left some sandwiches.
⎯ “ a very and happy good morning to you, ” she greeted anran as soon as she saw her friend. aeran was supposed to apologise to them for making the other wait but instead, she placed a sandwich on their hand without even asking if they want one and questioned in a breezy tone, ⎯ “ why did you come so early? ”
( @yhanran )
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ today, anran’s rises earlier than normal - which says a lot because she’s always waking up at the cusp of dawn. but they’re excited. today is a special day. they’re not a stranger to visiting busan, trips often taken whether by their own car or with the bus. she likes the city for events like movies or when she’s craving a variation of her home country food. it’s convenient to have a spot one hour away when they’re missing objects or a city only experience.
but it’s nice to have the quiet of the town to return to after a long day out. it’s the harmony she’s been seeking her entire life away from all the pandemonium. but life can’t be all about peace, there has to be a bit of fun. they relish in it with their newfound friend. a girl who has ties to the town, but was away during the years anran lived here. but now they’ve met, connected and they find it absolutely fascinating their names are even alike - it makes them giggle thinking about it.
today the two of them are out on a journey to the city to head to a raccoon cafe. it sounds redundant - they live in the countryside where wild animals are abundant. but the ones crawling around in the forest, fun to see, aren’t friendly. she wants to pet a racoon and aeran’s joining her on the journey. they sit waiting at the bus stop when the woman arrives.
❝ an excellent morning to you! ❞ anran chirps back in response as they receive the sandwich. ❝ excitement? or maybe i was trying to nab a seat at the stop for us before someone else took it. ❞ they joke around, tilting their head to the side in a chuckle. ❝ looks like you already had a lively morning, though. sandwiches? ❞

————— ˚。 ・゚゚ ❝ ah. i’ll take your word for it. but that’s unfortunate. ❞ they know little about the western zodiac, much more about the eastern one, so they can only take his words to be the truth. but the way the boy attempts to conceal the doldrums with a joke makes her realize there’s a notion eating away at his thoughts. their empathetic side rises in an instant, feeling sympathy for the poor boy.
anran isn’t curious, never a nosy person nor the individual to even look at what people thought about her on online forums. she waits for people to come to her, and if they never do, then she doesn’t poke for an answer either. they hear what they’re meant to hear. nothing more and nothing less. so she hums along at first to what he says, so that he knows she’s listening, but she’s waiting until he finishes speaking.
a familiar name drops with a recollection that anran doesn’t know much about. but it’s a tale that often pops up in all the novels and media, she consumes. she lowers her camera, reaching her free hand over to pat him on the back. ❝ it’s okay to not be fine. ❞ they say to soothe him. ❝ that sounds like a lot. ❞
it might not be her place to say it, but she tilts her head to look at him and inquires. ❝ did you... did you directly talk to him about all of this? i don’t know all the details so i don’t think i can offer you much but. i think you should just be honest and ask him what’s on his mind? not in an accusing way of why are you ignoring me. but more like... so you can understand him better. ❞

❝ you want me to choose? ❞ she points at herself to confirm. ❝ well. alright! can do that. you go find a seat. ❞ there’s a slight added pressure from having to carry another person’s tastebuds on her shoulder. but they think they have it. they walk up to the counter. ❝ can i have one of each kind of cupcake please? ❞
yumi never wished to be rich for any other reason than the exact one facing her. too many choices of treats and far too little money in her wallet. she made almost nothing as a busser. she had enough to live, of couse, but that was about it. she whispered to herself. “if i had all the money in the world… i would spend it all right here.” she stared at the menu as if it were a grand train station. anran came screeching through to snap her out of it. “uh,” yumi said, only having half heard anran’s words. cupcakes? something about cake? “yeah, totally.” she nodded confidently. her stomach was leading her eyes despite her ears scrambling for the reigns. yumi licked her lips. she swallowed. the smell of bread that filled her nose. the taste of all the frosting just kissed the tip of her tongue. “you know what,” she spoke slowly at first, as if coming out of a trance, “i-i really don’t know. i’m so hungry i could eat anything. just, let’s- you can just order whatever you want and i’ll eat it? yeah?”

"and now you want to get sweets instead of making up for it?" and the thing is that seojun doesn't sound angry, barely sounds disappointed and his question is clearly a rhetoric one like a parent trying to see if their kids would have the guts to tell him the "wrong answer" or give him yet another excuse. "give me a good reason why we should do that." even if he knows there's none; even if he thinks he knows that anran knows that too or maybe she'll just charm him into getting her way— seojun is easy like that, he's not going to lie.
————— ˚。 ・゚゚ they feel so apologetic. a firm stickler to schedules and an active figure, there’s also the added on weight of being the person pulling seojun out for a morning jog. but anran’s missed it. not because she sleeps in, she’s the person who wakes up one minute before her alarm each day to the point it only exists as a reminder. it was more the fact she saw a stray cat on her balcony, stuck hanging from a potted plant. not a friendly kitten either - they’d ended up juggling between dodging a boxing paw and trying to unravel the vines.
they’d lost track of time because of it and only realized after the grumpy feline vanished home that they’ve missed the entire jog. the sun had even risen a good height up the sky while she was working. it’s why they’ve rushed out the door immediately, thinking up a way to make up for the situation. his disappointment is reasonable, anran would be too if she ended up in the same situation.
❝ i do have a good reason it's just...a long reason. but that’s not the point. reason or not i could have messaged you and i didn’t. i’m sorry! ❞ she bows her head down in apology. ❝ the sweet is me making up to you, okay? ❞ they plead with him, glancing up again, eyes wide and her hands clasped. ❝ but it’s just a suggestion! we can do anything you want. just let me make it up to you for making you not only wake up early, but leave you hanging. ❞
