HE XUAN DIDN'T CARE ABOUT business or making money. He cared about one thing only, the very same thing that rooted into his very marrow, his whole being ; what kept him strong and stubborn to be here having this conversation with the only other being having been left with a single feeling keeping him together. He didn't know what Hua Cheng's was, didn't care either. His, was anger, hatred. The one thing he cared about : revenge.
Tumblr media
So, if he could strike a deal with the King of wicked riches, in which he would take care of all and any expenses, He Xuan would pay him back with information. Win - win. They had shook on it centuries ago, and would form time to time meet up to exchange everything and anything learnt in the Heavens.
He liked having this relationship with the Red Calamity. They respected each other, their deal, their interests, their territory. Neither of them cared about ruling over the other, and thus they had kept an unlikely balance and peace. With time, they had even learnt to relax around the other, and He Xuan felt comfortable enough to indulge in the food and drink and games laid before him during their meetings. He reached for another skewer and went for a bite, but stopped in midair with his mouth open as he felt a sudden, odd, murderous intent thicken the air. He eyed the calm looking Crimson Rain Sought Flower, narrowed his eyes suspiciously, and proceeded to take his bite and lean back in his seat.
❝ Any man mad enough to go into the mountain. It just surprised me to think anyone would think about devotion, of all things, during the trials,❞ he said, eyeing the other ghost much more attentively, chewing his food slowly.
❝ So… When you were in Mt. Tonglu… Did you ever come across a cave with hundreds of statues of a god ? I always found it bizarre, wonder if it was a weird mental trap. So out of place, though, didn’t feel like it belonged there. It always stuck to me just for how… eerie it was. And that’s big for the Kiln. ❞ | ( HE XUAN &. HUA CHENG | @yinmxngx
Tumblr media
Cards, chips, dice, and much too expensive wine covered the table. These little rendezvous between him and Black Water came out of necessity. A mutually beneficial peace weighed down by Hua Cheng's running debt on the man.
Someday he'll learn how to monetize that waterlogged palace.
Red smoke curled from his lips as he listened to the question. It covered his face in a haze as his eye widened, lips curled, and E-ming on his hip shook. An attendant whose job was to go unnoticed left with barely a swish of heavy curtain. Smart. That's why he hired him.
" The cave of a thousand gods. " He airly said. " Legends say it was born out of a man's devotion. " The words dripped off his tongue as sweet as the wine he chased it with. " Wonder who would be mad enough to do that. "

╰┈➤ feels like i'm talking to myself half the time. ( WWX @ JC )
Tumblr media Tumblr media
❝ IT'S CALLED PUNISHMENT FOR A reason, ❞ Jiang Cheng said, swinging his feet idly in the water, sat at one of the piers in Caiyi Town with his trouser legs rolled up and shoes by his side. They had just been given the notice that Lan Qiren had gone and classes were suspended for the time being, so he and Wei Ying didn't waste any time rolling into town. Now that the sun was setting and its reflection painted Biling Lake swirling shades of gold and red, they wound down from the day with a basket of loquats that matched the lowering sun in the sky.
While Wei Ying had gotten himself in that pickle all on his own, Jiang Cheng couldn't help feel a little bad. Lan Wangji was, in fact, a walking wall. Saying he felt like that only half the time was some type of weird kindness on his part. ❝ You should try not talking, that'll save you from feeling like that, ❞ he said, mirthfully flat. ❝ I guess at least there's Huaisang to go talk to. ❞ And me, always, left unsaid. ❝ He seems like the only other normal person in there. Or those guys we trained with yesterday. Stop dwelling on the Lan Jade, just ignore him and he'll ignore you, and you can stop wallowing and saving me these conversations. ❞

THE 'EARTH MASTER' CLOSED HER eyes as droplets of rain splattered on her face from the Wind Master's fanning. Her robes caught the wind and she sighed when Shi Qingxuan's wet robe slapped against her. She looked out to a side, seeming a tad uninterested even though she was listening carefully. Crimson Rain Sought Flower once again catching strays... Oh, well. Who even cared ? He would've been blamed anyway, so it's just as well they both were quick to think to use Ming Yi's call for aid and subsequent death to their advantage. Hua Cheng was just as frivolous as herself.
Tumblr media
She was just about to tell poor babbling Wind Master that she, a god, was not going to get sick from getting a little rain on her, when suddenly the conversation took a turn down Memory Lane and Shi Qingxuan mentioned their brother. He Xuan's eyes moved to glance at them, attention piqued. It was so, so easy to get information on the Water Tyrant from his sibling themselves, given Shi Qingxuan was a trusting, open book. So naïve. She had made the right decision to befriend them to get close and clear her suspicions, but who would've thought the Wind Master was going to be, in fact, a genuinely benevolent god ? Well, as much as being a selfish bastard living lives of heavenly luxury at the cost of miserable souls looking for solace could be 'benevolent'. What a farce, what a bunch of hypocrites.
Her eyes swept Shi Qingxuan down and up again. If there was someone that didn't fit into that demographic, that'd be them. Never mind they were a part of it, they just didn't meet the terrible traits. He Xuan narrowed her eyes. ❝ So I have to take care of myself so you don't get sick off me and I don't have to take care of you, even though I got sick first ? How does that make any sense ? ❞ She asked, eyebrow twitching with benign annoyance.
Her robes were much simpler than the Wind Master's, lighter, too, without all of that extra weight from the beads and ornaments and all the bling. Besides, she was the Supreme Ship-Sinking Black Water ; if there was something she was familiar with, it was being wet and cold. So, no, she didn't take her outer robe off. ❝ I'm not taking care of you. You can ask your 'ge'. You know, when you talk about him, he sounds like a completely different man. Are you sure you're not mistaking him for someone else ? ❞ She was fishing for information, prodding at Shi Qingxuan to tell her more about him. That arrogant tumor truly was difficult to imagine being caring of anyone else, although if the only exception was Shi Qingxuan, she supposed it made sense.
Ahhh— What bad luck !
Tumblr media
A blast of wind at their sleeve did nothing but make the wet slap of it against their wrist, and poor Ming-Yi's side, even colder. Their outer robes were already on the heavier side from the intricate coral and teal beading the designer had done for them but now it felt like a million pounds. They fluttered their fan open and closed sending out little bursts of air, again at poor Ming-Yi, while staring out at the storm. No array meant no skip to Heaven or somewhere drier. Two gods stuck in the rain, how awful.
" Sorry Mi-xiong— I usually can feel the bend in the wind but I was distracted. " It was a bad habit of theirs and ge had been pushing them to be more self aware. They tapped their forehead with the tip of their fan, oh how silly.
They looked around in the tight space to strip off their robes tired of the weight and the chill. Worse, Ming-Yi was already so pale and soaked to the bone ! " You look freezing. And right after you recovered from what that awful Crimson Rain Sought Flower had done to you. What if you get sick ? And then I'll get sick and I'm awful at being sick. " They were still talking, or rather babbling, hating the sensation of wet clothes getting pulled off their skin. They didn't even want to think about the state of their hair or makeup...
" Ge used to take care of me when I was little— I refused to leave bed or eat and drink anything medicinal. I still don't like it...so you should take off your robes before you catch something unless you want to force feed me bitter herbal teas. "
Finally it was off. The robe was laid [ tossed ] over the altar with a rather pathetic slop and a whole line of beading ripped on the granite. They bit their tongue but accepted it as a casualty of the storm. What had they done to their Lord Rain Master to cause such a torrent ?! Maybe they should write her an apology note...or some rare plant. She liked her plants.

Feng Xin kept his gaze fixed on the prince, once again down on his knees next to his bed, watching as he drank the water in one desperate gulp. His brows pinched when he noticed the light tremble in his hand, and quickly he reached to take the glass from him and help him put it down.
He couldn't help but wonder what exactly the prince had been dreaming about to get him in such a state, though looking at how things were... —
Feng Xin tore his gaze from the prince for a short moment to look at the window.
— It wasn't too hard to guess, was it ?
The prince's guard turned to him again, making a double take at his request. His bewilderment was evident in the way his deep, brown eyes widened, and he opened his mouth to speak but immediately closed it again.
Tumblr media
The fact that Xie Lian asked if he could, like a friend making a request rather than a prince giving a command, made Feng Xin much more compelled to fulfil it. He was always happy to do as His Highness the Crown Prince commanded anyway , not just because it was his job but out of his own volition, so a request like this made Feng Xin burn with determination. He'd do anything for his prince.
But... While he wasn't wearing his plates, he was still wearing a few layers of leather wrapped around his arms and waist which were definitely pretty dirty, and even at Xie Lian's request, he felt too lowly to even dare sit on the prince's bed. Was he even allowed to, even though the prince himself asked him to ?
Feng Xin didn't want to disrespect him ! But he didn't want to go against his wishes ! As he hesitated, fumbled, trapped in this dilemma, his brows furrowed deeper.
❝ Is it... really okay for this servant to do as His Highness... petitions ? ❞ He asked, uncharacteristically way too formal. As soon as the words left his mouth, he felt embarrassed and a rush of blood heated his face up.
────୨🌼ৎ──── ❛ A few hours. ❜ Xie Lian's voice trembled, muffled by fatigue, despite his efforts to mask it. It felt as if he had been trapped in an endless nightmare for weeks, darkness stretching before him like a deep abyss. Then, he felt Feng Xin's fingers weaving through his own—warmth and reassurance flooding back into him. In that moment, Xie Lian's heart began to settle, knowing he was awake and safe with his most trusted guard and dearest friend by his side.
Desperately, he tried to push down the haunting memories of the land of tenderness that lingered in the recesses of his mind. Instead, he focused on the intimate connection of their hands, the way Feng Xin's thumb gently caressed his knuckles with tender precision. The feel of Feng Xin's hands brought him comfort; they were not soft and delicate but rugged and calloused, evidence of countless hours spent honing his skills with the bow and arrows. The subtle tickle of his rough skin against Xie Lian's was a grounding sensation, warming him from the inside. Having him close felt like a lifeline, slowly easing the grip of fear that had ensnared him, bringing him back down from the edge of his frightful thoughts.
The absence of warmth was palpable the moment Feng Xin stepped away, his lingering presence almost a reluctant embrace that Xie Lian wished would not end. As Feng Xin moved slowly, every inch away felt like an eternity. Xie Lian's gaze followed him, a silent plea tethered to him like a whisper in the air, as Feng Xin returned with a glass of cool, clear water. The prince hadn’t realized how parched he felt until that moment, the sight of the glass igniting a desperate thirst within him. He grasped it with trembling hands, lifting it to his lips and gulping down the refreshing liquid in one eager draught.
Tumblr media
As he set the empty glass on the bedside table with a soft clink, he caught Feng Xin watching him, a quiet concern etched on his face. Sleep... the very thought sent a shiver down Xie Lian’s spine. It was the last thing he wanted to surrender to, primarily because he feared the terrifying visions that would crowd his mind the moment he closed his eyes. Stealing a glance back at Feng Xin, his heart raced, and he felt a daring request hovering just beyond his lips, his fingers nervously twisting the silky sheets beneath him.
❛ I don’t want to sleep, ❜ he finally murmured, his voice barely above a breath. ❛ Can you... can you stay here with me? Just lie down beside me, at least until I drift off. I feel so much better when you're near. ❜

All of the different smells wafting through the air from the countless stalls and boisterous vendors shoving brochettes on his face made He Xuan feel nauseous — while sometimes food provided him a great pleasure, others it was the complete opposite. This was one of those other times.
It was like his body remembered starving, stomach coiling in on itself painfully. Even though his body now was healthy, strong, immortal, the memories were stubborn and rooted into his very guts. Oftentimes he felt an insatiable hunger ; others, the unending torture of his body consuming itself from the inside out.
The smell of food made him feel truly sick, like the steam alone was filling his stomach and it was unable to hold any of it. Getting impatient, He Xuan with his lips pursed and tugged down in disgust, absentmindedly began walking faster, attempting to get out of there as soon as possible.
Tumblr media
It was only after a little kid bumped into him and made him look back that he realised him companion was long gone. He stopped and blinked, confused, turning around and scanning the crowd for the Wind Master.
❝ Shi— ❞ he began to say, but just after the first syllable of his name left his lips did he hear a most familiar bubbling laughter coming from further down, deep into the crowd. He Xuan sighed deeply and ventured back into the sea of people, pushing through, mumbling apologies here and there. He also stopped breathing - he had forgotten he didn't need to ! What a wonderful thing to suddenly remember and save himself some torture.
He heard Shi Qingxuan again before they saw them, and turning around in the direction of their gentle voice, the first thing he saw was some old woman’s bony fingers carding through long, lustrous hair. So many people huddled up around them, foreign to such raw beauty, offering their goods to get a coin from them, touching their robes in hopes to rub on some of their great fortune. Poor soul, too good to pull away, too generous, always.
He Xuan squeezed in, placed a gentle hand on the small of their back, sliding it across to hook it carefully around their waist and coax them out of the crowd gathering around them.
As Shi Qingxuan rambled on about the bracelet, He Xuan inspected it with a raised brow. ❝ You already have so many of them… ❞ He said, as if already owning was an impediment to one of the richest gods, as if they weren't spoilt rotten and got whatever they wanted. Besides, gold or silver, blue or red, black or white, anything looked good on them.
Unable to help solve his friend’s predicament and wanting to save both of them time, Ming Yi turned around and took the golden bracelet from the old lady. He dug into his pocket, dropped more than enough coins for both bands, and dragged Shi Qingxuan away.
❝ We need to get going. ❞
[ GUIDE ]: in the process of guiding the receiver through a crowded place, the sender’s hand protectively grazes against the small of their back. | SHI QINGXUAN & MING-YI |@yinmxng
Tumblr media
Being back in a bustling market always made Shi Qingxuan nostalgic for another life long since gone. Being the child of an infamous merchant meant a lot of time in boring drafty storerooms so when they were free to go to the market proper, it always felt like a treat. Made sweeter by the stall owners who spoiled them rotten hoping to gain favor through the merchant's beloved children.
[ If it actually did anything, Shi Qingxuan had no idea as they were more than happy to luxuriate over pleasures than over trade deals. Not much had changed. ]
Merchants pulled them out of the crowd and tutted at their jewelry, hair pieces, and robes always finding something they could improve. Shi Qingxuan let them dote adoring the attention and happy to spread some of their wealth. A granny appeared at their side and jammed a bracelet onto their wrist. They twisted their hand right and left showing off the gleam of the inlet gemstones around the thin silver band.
It really was a beauty...
" Mi-xiong— " Shi Qingxuan called as they felt a familiar hand on their back. Good, they were getting worried they had been taken off for an easy mark. They loved to play tough but they were really a softy under the right conditions ! " What do you think ? Is it me ? Or maybe the gold one would be better ? You have to decide for me I can't choose ! " They added the begging lilt to their voice as they held their wrist up for inspection.
