Imogen Cunningham

Cunningham, Imogen. Martha Graham 2. 1931. Imogen! : Imogen Cunningham Photographs, 1910-73. 61. Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1976.
I read the album of American photographer Imogen Cunningham. In a photo named Martha Graham 2 he took in 1931, two overlapping figures appear in one picture. It's like there are phantoms that exist in different spaces. At first, I thought Imogen was projecting the figure through something like glass, but the text below the photo told me it was a double exposure.
What is double exposure?
Double exposure photography is a technique that layers two different exposures on a single image, combining two photographs into one. Double exposure creates a surreal feeling for your photos and the two photographs can work together to convey deep meaning or symbolism. A similar technique, called a “multiple exposure,” is when you combine more than two exposures in a single image.

Cunningham, Imogen. Jane and Alice and Imogen. 1940. Imogen! : Imogen Cunningham Photographs, 1910-73. 55. Seattle: University of Washington Press, 1976.
Another photo from Imogen that caught my eye was "Jane and Alice and Imogen". The composition of this photo is interesting, at first glance, a lady (Jane) is painting her self portrait in front of the mirror, however, the photographer (Imogen) 's reflection also appeared in the mirror, and a portrait of Alice was hidden in the lower-left corner of the photo. Every "person" is appearing in this photo in a different way.

Cecil Beaton
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Beaton, Cecil. Gertrude Lawrence. 1930. Beaton Portraits. London: National Portrait Gallery, 1968.
The demeanor and expressions of the characters photographed by Cecil Beaton are vivid and natural. In a portrait of Gertrude Lawrence, he uses a mirror to make the composition of the picture symmetrical, which makes the photo look like two people are looking at and touching each other.

Week 10
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like to photograph the interior of the house through the window, the reflections from the window create an interesting texture and have the feeling of shooting people in quarantine, which is in line with the theme of the epidemic.

Week 9
I used Natural Light in all my photography because natural lighting can illuminate the whole scene very well, and I want to portray the daily life of a person, which requires interaction between the person and the background.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I like this photo very much. I tried to take a photo of the cat with the mask, but she was very difficult to control, so it was not easy to take a good photo, but luckily cats are good at rejecting people, so I thought of taking advantage of this and took this sad photo of being rejected by a cat.

Week 8
Research
During the 30-day challenge, I was hard to decide on a clear topic, so I tried different photography styles and content. I hope to find my purpose in the process of trying. In the end I chose a photo that I most wanted to continue developing.
Tumblr media
The advice I received in class gave me some ideas and I decided to take photos related to face masks and the COVID-19 pandemic. I looked at some photography works on similar themes.
There have been acts of wearing masks on statues all over the world. This kind of funny caring is very humorous, but there are some that also seems a little depressing. If I want to avoid this feeling in my photos, I should take care that the shooting environment is well lit, and reduce the upward view, because the upward view can sometimes create a condescending feeling.

I especially like the kind of photos that record the daily life of ordinary people during the epidemic. They look very realistic and easily resonate with readers.

Since it is difficult for me to visit all my friends and ask them to be my models, to save time, I will only take photos of one of my friends, so to prevent the photo book from being too boring, I will try to make the content of the photos interesting.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I started developing unusual uses for masks, like sleep eyes mask, or exam cheat sheets, or adding emojis to the mask to express the model's emotions.
