Being overstimulated is such a weird thing to explain to people. Like "hey sorry, I'm not mad at you and this is nobody's fault and I'm not blaming anyone for it happening, I am aware this is a part of regular everyday life but I am mentally crumbling because There Have Been Things Happening nonstop for 5 hours straight back to back with no breaks, and I really need to sit down in complete silence for like 15-25 minutes, after which I will be completely fine and can proceed as normal. But if I'm not allowed to have that, I will resort to violence."

I took my little brother (autistic, mostly non verbal) out and he was using his voice keyboard to tell me something, and this little boy (maybe 4 or 5?) heard him and asked me "Is he a robot??" I tried to explain to him that no, he isn't a robot, he just communicates differently, but my darling brother was in the background max volume "I am robot I am robot I am robot I am robot"

I think pre banishment Xie Lian always considered himself, FX and MC to be friends. Yes servants ‘technically’ but his friends. Xie Lian doesn’t seem to have had any other friends, so he has no other companion point.
During his first banishment there is the amazing scene where he sees a servant beating their master for being cruel/terrible, and immediately relates the situation to himself and MC but also himself and FX. However I don’t think he fully internalises what that fully means.
So does that mean at point during his second banishment he had the realisation that due to his station and his own behaviour that FX and MC were never actually his friends?
That one night he was alone and cold and realised that maybe he’s *never* had any friends at all. That it doesn’t matter how much he loves them, how much he treasured them, because he never stopped treating them like servants. That they would both be well within their rights to hate him for it and never want to see him again.
Some readers give Xie Lian shit for his treatment of FX and MC in the current time. I get that it seems strange sometimes before you have their whole backstories, but do not get where they are coming from if they’ve finished the series.
Xie Lian seems to stand by two principles when interacting with them:
1) To never initiate.
2) To treat them as he would any other heavenly official.
That can seem cold, but there is a simple reason for each.
For the first Xie Lian doesn’t want to bring up unpleasant memories or force himself on people who want nothing to do with him. He lets them set the terms of their contact whenever he can.
For the second most of their interactions in the first few books take place in the public communication array, or in front of a crowd. Xie Lian is aware that everyone is watching to see how he treats the two officals who used to be his servants, and that neither of them seem to fully be able to shake the label of ‘servant’ even after 800 years. Therefore he treats them with the upmost respect.
As for why Xie Lian never reveals their disguises I think that is also pretty simple. Once again he is allowing them to set the terms of their interactions, if they feel like they have to appear in disguise he doesn’t want to embarrass them by outing the disguise. But perhaps more than that, Xie Lian did see them as friends, did love them, has missed them for 800 years. If pretending he can’t see through their disguises means he gets to spend time with them, then he’s happy to do so.
Xie Lian is a character whose narrative purpose is to show that perfection does not exist. His love Feng Xin and Mu Qing is not perfect, he has hurt them, he has mistreated them, he has pushed them away, but none of that means that he doesn’t love them deeply.

“Back in the eighties dungeons were becoming a thing in New York. Guys would pay a lot of money to come there and have some dominatrix tell them what to do. I was making leather pencil skirts for a lot of the doms, with holes in the back so that guys could kiss their ass. One day I was fitting a dom named Asia, and I told her: ‘I bet I could make more money than you without wearing stuff like this.’ She bet me I couldn’t. It was all a big goof. But then I started really thinking about it. Asia was making $150 a session, and that was real money. So I did the same thing I always do when I get an idea. I just ran an ad in the back of the Village Voice. Most of these girls were advertising how young they were. So I used the word ‘mature.’ And I figured out how to write ‘Jewish Guys Welcome’ in Yiddish, and I put that at the bottom. It was some of the easiest money I ever made. I never let them touch me. All I had to do was be a bossy black woman. And I could do that easy because my mother had been such a bitch. I’d pretend to be a school teacher, or a nanny. It was the dumbest shit. I just kept inventing crazy scenarios. And the crazier the scenario, the more money I made. One time I heard about a dom on the Upper East Side who charged $3,000 a week to kidnap a guy and lock him in her basement. I didn’t have a basement, but I knew a limo driver named Dean who liked to hustle like me. So every time I got a call from a new client, I’d say: ‘You want to be kidnapped, don’t you?’ And he’d start stuttering like: ‘Duh, duh, duh, duh.’ And I’d say: ‘Listen to me closely. Stand on the corner of 5th and 18th tomorrow at 3 pm. Don’t be late.’ Then I’d call Dean and tell him the plan. It was always easy to spot the guy. He’d be the one checking his watch and looking scared as shit. So we’d roll up in the limo, grab him by the collar, and pull him inside. Then I’d lock the doors and start telling him what to do. Everything went down in the back of the limo. Dean just rolled up the partition and kept his eyes on the road. At the end I’d give him $100, because I was getting $250 for that.”
