I love making comics on paper and then painting on my phone. It's fun, not to mention that I feel freer to draw comics on paper and more exaggerated drawings on my phone.

What is the context of this scene?... I haven't really thought about whether this is something that will actually happen in Delta's story or not, I just did it for fun.

(Dreamswap) A Letter to No One

You guys wanted an explanation for Dream’s sun symbol charm…

… and now we’re here.

Nobody asks me why I wear this charm… people pass it off as aesthetics. I suppose that’s for the better, I have a very difficult time with this story…

But for record’s sake, it’s important that I tell it. I must get it out of my head or it will haunt my thoughts forever, or even suffer the fate of being completely forgotten.

Many, many years ago, when I had recently coordinated my work into an official organization, I was spending a certain day jumping from AU to AU on my own, looking for people in emotional need.

I sensed a particularly powerful source of darkness and utter misery, and I followed it, only to discover a young human standing on the roof of a hospital.

I knew what they were about to do. Before I could say a word, they noticed my presence and turned around.

As most people did… and frankly still do, they asked me if I was an angel.

With my lack of preparation, I simply told them yes, anything to get them away from the edge. I wouldn’t have been fast enough to catch them, had they jumped.

I told them that I was there to rescue them from whatever was hurting them.

And that’s precisely what I did… I took them back with me. I told them to rest, I told them that things would be okay now. They accepted me joyously, ecstatic to get away from whatever their former life was.

Over the course of time, I spent a lot of time around this human. They were an eighteen year-old named Ani with short black hair and blue eyes. They had a kind heart (quite literally, their soul was green) and they were always looking for ways to help the people around them.

I noticed that they were quite frail, unable to go long periods without rest. On one occasion, they momentarily fainted.

I wasn’t sure what was wrong with them. They told me it was okay, and that they’ve dealt with this their whole life.

Ani had an affinity for crafts, as I learned over time. The desk in their sleeping quarters was soon littered with all kinds of things, particularly beads, wires and even handmade charms. It wasn’t limited to that, however–they were building little things all the time: sewing dolls and stuffed animals, making figures and buildings out of cardboard or popsicle sticks, weaving occasionally, tying strings into knots to create bracelets…

They contributed a lot of their creations to the young children I was taking in, who were overjoyed in turn, and even taught them how to make some things.

Everyone would agree that Ani was a bright ray of sunshine in the castle. (The metaphorical kind, because I was the literal kind.) It was hard to believe that they were the miserable person that I had found on that hospital roof.

I would be lying if I said that I didn’t feel anything for them.

One day, they approached me with a small box. They said it was for me, addressing me as “Lord Dream” like everyone else as they frequently did, as much as I insisted that it was not necessary.

Inside it was a charm that they had made, attached to a chain from the back. It was golden, shaped like a sun and had a red gem in the center.

“Do you like it?”

I loved it.

They were grinning ear-to-ear as they put it on me, right under the collar of my shirt. I was just as happy as they were, and I couldn’t really understand why. It wasn’t the same as that joy I got from helping people, it was so much stronger.

I thought things would continue like this… but…

… soon, it all ended.

Ani had never told me what was wrong with them, and I was foolish to take their word for it when they said everything was fine.

They had a fatal disease associated with their blood, and it was slowly killing them. I discovered this only when they had fainted again and I had taken them to the hospital wing.

All the pieces came together. Why they were at a hospital in their world. Their death was inevitable, and they were always in pain. It must have been why they had been on that rooftop, or else they would have been confined in that human hospital until death…

Ani died the next day, and I was there when it happened, holding their hand.

I…

… I don’t think I’ve ever been the same.

Welp, I have absolutely no self control. Behold, the fabled Ani and Dream fusion that ended up being way more major of a point of contemplation than I anticipated.

Some context:

The new outcome is called JR’s Angel. It is an outcome where Dream sacrifices his soul to save Ani, and they end up fusing into two consciousnesses in one body–Ani’s. Ani gains all of Dream’s powers and ends up being the new leader of JR, although they technically lead it together since Dream is a part of them. Because Dream didn’t technically die, Nightmare is still alive.

Control is split between them, however Dream does not usually take full control because he was the one who decided to sacrifice himself.

Ani doesn’t know how Dream’s powers work, so he’s usually in charge of using them while Ani controls the ‘human’ part. Cue their wings randomly ‘hugging’ them.

They can communicate subconsciously. If Dream thinks something ‘loud enough’ for it to be something he would say out loud, Ani can hear it. His regular thoughts and memories are still separate from Ani’s, and vice versa.

Ani is trying to convince Dream to change JR’s outlook on criminals. He is growing more lenient with rehabilitating some of them rather than downright executing them, but in order for Ani to make further progress, they have to speak his language and slowly change his mind, eventually about Nightmare (and how he doesn’t actually have any real evidence that Nightmare is some kind of threat to the multiverse).

Dream has to teach Ani how to fly, but does not intend to teach them how to weaponize the powers they share.

When Dream sees a need to fight, he forcibly takes control and pretty much puts Ani to sleep so they don’t see what happens.

This all takes place decades before Cross, Error, Ink and Blue’s time, so they aren’t here… yet.
