Anyone struggling with college applications and finding scholarships?
If anyone is struggling with college applications and/or scholarships and/or anything to do with school or college like and/or reblog this! I was thinking there’s probably tons of people going through this so we can all help each other out or talk to one another about it since we’re all going through it or have been through this!

hey guys!! so i just had my ap psychology midterm today, so i thought i’d share some of the tips i use to study psychology ^_^
flashcards
flashcards can be super helpful since psych has so many new vocabulary terms associated with it! either make flashcards by hand, or use quizlet to make ones online
mindmaps
mindmaps are a step above flashcards, taking all of those important concepts & terms and illustrating how they’re related. take a broad term/unit and break down all of the key terms within it. it’s also really nice to use mindmaps to see how terms from other units are related/similar, as you may have to relate them on an frq
revising notes
it can be really helpful to return to your old class & reading notes and rewrite/revise them. in particular, summarizing the key concepts from a chapter and restating them in your own words is really helpful. pictures & mnemonic devices can also be really great!
old tests
look over any old tests you have and correct any mistakes you made before! going over information you previously struggled with and making sure you understand is particularly important when it comes to a big exam, like the ap test in may
scheduling
hey, remember the spacing effect you learned about? it really works! spread out your study time, instead of studying in big chunks. find time to study in small increments during the day- maybe a bit at breakfast, then some while on the bus, then a bit at lunch…

How to write an AP World DBQ
Each AP History class has slightly different DBQ rules. The average score for the DBQ is a 2 out of 9 which is bad for how easy the essay is. In my opinion, it’s the easiest essay. You have to know how to write it but you don’t need to know any actual history. Last year I didn’t even know the topic and I ended up doing well enough. Make it your strength. One good essay is key. This essay is a pain to write but it’s easy when you know what you’re doing.
During the reading time
Read the question and rewrite exactly what it’s asking. This sounds stupid but it really helps. It’s super easy to answer the wrong question. Make sure your essay talks about the question.
Take small notes about each document as you go, use easy words like positive, negative, social, political, economic, ect. You won’t know the groupings until you finish all the documents so it’s nice to have a few quick options.
After you read them for the first time, you probably have a better idea of your groups. Make sure you have three groupings. Make sure the groups answer the question. Go back and take note of what group each document is in.
Circle the author or the thing next to the author saying who they are. You’re going to need to notice this.
Underline a quote or a line. Just use that for your paper. Don’t try to reread the whole thing every single time.
Write your thesis. Write it. Seriously. It makes for an easier start.
Typically I like to have my groupings on the front of the paper, just a header with the numbers. It makes it quicker.
Writing it
Start by writing the document numbers on the front page of the documents. Cross each number out as you use that document. It’s the easiest way to keep track. You need to use all the documents or all but one. Make sure you don’t lose points on this.
Write a strong thesis. The thesis is worth one point. Make sure it’s good. You don’t even need an intro paragraph. Just write the thesis and move on. Three part thesis works best. It gives you structure.
Try to use every document. If there is one you don’t understand, ignore it. Otherwise, at least make an attempt. Use the word perhaps! Perhaps isn’t absolute so it can’t really be wrong.
You only need to identify bias for three sources but try to identify bias for all of them. It can be as simple as “they worked for the government thus they support it as they want power and a job.”
Don’t use the word document. Use the author’s name or the document’s title. Example: “Document two says that the French revolution was a total failure” is not a good sentence. Instead say something like “DeGaulle believed that France was dishonored in World War II(Doc 4).”
Do put (Doc 1) at the end of the sentence where you reference the document. Just do it. The graders want to see it. It’s also easy to look back and check that you used all the documents
I have always been told to not quote the documents. Paraphrase them. Use at most ten words. Analyze the words don’t just use them.
You have to include a sentence or two about a document that should be there and tell why. If the topic is imperialism or Europe generally taking over the world, just say the voice of a native because they are the other side of the story. BS this part. Pick a voice that should be heard on the topic. It’s just going to be BS. Make it simple. But make sure you have this! It’s one point, it’s important. Do it first thing or do it last thing. DON’T FORGET ABOUT IT. Basically, it’s a point of view thing. What other point of view should you have to completely understand the issue?
You’re going to get bored and lazy. You don’t need a conclusion or an intro. For an intro, just a thesis works. For a conclusion, just scribble more BS down or just restate your thesis.
Other helpful tips(with some help from my friends)
Don’t cry even though you will want to
Make inferences. Doesn’t have to be right, just sound right.
The essay is long and dull. Just treat it as a marathon(because honestly with the three essays, it is). Keep a steady pace. You have time but not too much time.
Honestly, take your time. Your other essays can write. You probably don’t know much about the other prompts. Make sure you have all the points for the DBQ before moving on to the harder essays.
Believe in yourself. Believe you can do it. Trust yourself to do it right and do it well
Make sure your handwriting is rather legible.
You have to write in black pen. Be comfortable with writing in pen.
Am I missing anything?

College Admissions
Hi friends! I just finished 17 college applications and I’m fresh with advice for you all so here it is:
STANDARDIZED TESTING:
get this shit done ASAP; I started taking practice tests my freshman year and by the end of my sophomore year I had the score I wanted
it literally does not matter if you take the ACT or SAT, colleges don’t fucking care just pick one and do well on it
if you can, take 2 SAT subject tests; many colleges require them and so do special BA/MD programs so its best to have them prepared
“how do you get a good score??”: PRACTICE TESTS! literally take as many as you can and make sure you correct the mistakes you make on each of them so you’re actually learning
COMMON APPLICATION:
opens august 1; you do not have to submit anything then
you only get 10 slots for extracurricular activities so choose wisely; also you don’t necessarily need to fill all 10 slots; quality over quantity always
you can submit the common app to a school before you submit the writing supplement! get that shit submitted so you don’t have to worry about it later on
don’t type your essays on the common app; type them on a google doc and then transfer them later on so you can avoid it from crashing and not saving your work
COLLEGE LIST:
don’t fucking apply to all 8 Ivies
make sure you have safeties (easy to get into/affordable), matches (most likely will get in) along with your reaches (no fucking clue if you’ll get in)
be realistic about how many applications you can fill out
try to finalize by 1st semester senior year
COLLEGE ESSAYS:
genuinely spend time on these
don’t reuse your why X college essays
when answering the why X college prompt: DO YOUR RESEARCH! specifics are key; they want students that will actually matriculate
you can usually reuse your why X major essay so be sure to write a really good one
don’t be someone you’re not; just be natural and let your personality shine
they aren’t as bad as they seem I swear you just have to really work with
if you’re really having trouble with a prompt, google it and there’s bound to be admissions blogs that have written tips about answering it
GENERAL TIMELINE OF COLLEGE SHENANIGANS
freshman year:
don’t worry about harvard
literally just enjoy your only peaceful year of high school
join a few clubs
get good grades
you’re set
sophomore year:
start looking at schools and figure out what you want in a college
begin building your list
start taking APs (if your school allows you)
look for leadership opportunities
look for summer programs and other things to keep you busy in the summer
get ready for the hellstorm that is junior year
junior year:
get testing done by the end of this year
figure out who you’re asking for letters of rec
take AP classes
maintain your GPA
become a leader in your clubs
senior year:
lay on the floor and cry
like really let it out bc this year is hell
take a rigorous course load and get good grades
finish last minute testing if you still haven’t
register for common app
get letters of rec
send scores to colleges
start writing college essays
apply to scholarships
fill out FAFSA and CSS
good luck my lovelies xx my inbox is always open as always

so I received an ask (ages ago, i’m SO SORRY I JUST GOT TO IT) asking me to do a more in-depth post of that voice recording study method I mentioned in this post.
again, this isn’t catered to auditory learners! it’s always best to try it to see if it works for you, because i know for a fact that i’m not an auditory learner but this method does so much for me!
what you can use it for
content heavy subjects such as history, social studies, etc!
what you need before doing this
your textbook, a voice recording app, some prior knowledge optional: whatever notes you’ve written, a guidebook, etc
so how do i start?
most chapters have different sections with their respective headings, so it’s best you do one recording for one heading.
when you’re recording yourself, try to have this mindset: “i’m a teacher and my students are going to learn from the information i give them in this recording”. it may seem a little strange at first but i honestly think the recording bit is purely psychological (so you think you’re actually doing something useful) but if you don’t want to record, you can just talk to yourself and it’d work just fine!
DO NOT keep your textbook open in front of you and repeat everything you see on the page. Look at the heading, push your book away and recall everything you’ve already studied for this. Refer if necessary, but do not rely!
you can listen to the recordings after you’ve done them but i’ve honestly never listened to my recordings before, which is why i think the “recording” bit of this entire thing is psychological lmao you don’t even need to listen to them. the information you’ve spoken about naturally stays in your memory.
Tumblr media
this method is EXTREMELY USEFUL (i really can’t stress this enough) for all you guys who feel like you can’t memorise much from writing notes and you really don’t want to rewrite them.
that picture above just shows the recordings i currently have on my phone when i was trying to study for my history exam lmao. they’re rather short because those were made the day before the exam. usually my full chapter recordings add up to more than an hour!
different types of recordings
these recordings can be made multiple times, i usually break them into “just for class knowledge” and “actual memory retention”.
“just for class knowledge” recordings are made any time in the semester, just so you keep up with everything in class and you know all the content well.
“actual memory retention” recordings are made the day before the exam, because you’re guaranteed to remember everything, trust me. they’re usually shorter because at this point you’re expected to have everything already stored in your head and it’s just a matter of memorising.
using guidebooks while recording
check the publisher for your textbook to see whether they’ve published a guidebook as well! the publisher for my history textbooks always have a guidebook that’s directly related to the textbook so the information is generally the same, but more vague.
most people may not agree with this, but i really appreciate the vagueness of guidebooks. when i’m recording, i look at the heading and the relevant information in the guidebook, and then i branch out with my own info (that i’ve read from the textbook). this helps you remember the whole chunk of info a lot better!
i really recommend getting a guidebook, but if there aren’t any available, then your own notes will work just as well. i don’t think anyone’s notes are MORE detailed than the textbook, right?
please please don’t hesitate to ask if you guys have any questions regarding this because i know for a fact i suck at explaining things omg but this method has really helped me this year and i hope it works well for you guys too!!

i thought i was good at math until i put myself into hl math and it all went to shit down the drain. i have never had to study particularly hard for math as i have for other courses so starting over as a rookie feels strange but liberating. my math mark has improved greatly and so here is my guide on how to study math!
resources:
questionbank (if you have mac download winebottler to open) [will straight up save your life if you’re in ib hl math]
khan academy [bit annoying in that the videos are unnecessarily long because of mistakes, but useful for learning specific concepts]
wolfram alpha [helpful for double-checking annoying calculations]
google calculator [sometimes i forget my graphing calculator at school and i hate this calculator but i like it better than my phone]
your textbook [a bunch of practice questions with answers is a gift from heaven]
your friends [probably nice and want to help out]
your teacher [probably nice and want to help out, but if not, then ask another math teacher at your school]
math masterposts:
abs-studies
organisaticns
moisturbate
enfpfocustudyblr
doitforthea
notebooks-n-naps
general tips:
solve as many practice questions as you can - practice really makes perfect
do your homework. a lot of classes have homework questions on the test, just with different numbers
do your homework right, and by that i mean check your answers. math textbooks usually have answers, but if there aren’t any, compare with a friend. you need to know if you’re doing it right or not
write your notes using graph paper or buy a graph notebook because once you get into functions there’s no going back
math is all about pattern recognition, especially with word problems
word problems have key vocabulary that let you figure out what kind of math you need to use
if you have to draw a diagram, try to draw it somewhat to scale. you can sort of check if your answer makes sense that way
skipping steps is useful because speed is important but if it’s a step you feel uncomfortable skipping, then don’t do it; it will screw you over
a lot of people don’t get math because it’s hard! if you feel you understand what’s happening, try and help someone. it’ll benefit them and you, because that’s how you know if you really understand
learn how to use your graphing calculator. you can really use it to your advantage
memorize the math terminology and symbols. it may not feel necessary, but it’s useful and you could get screwed over on a test because you didn’t know summation notation or the symbol for integers
make sure your handwriting is as legible as possible. sometimes your answer is wrong simply because you couldn’t read your handwriting during the process and calculated the wrong numbers
asking for help is important because you always build your knowledge and even if you memorize and get away with it now, you will get screwed later. if your teacher scares you, ask a friend or get a tutor
specific tips for ib maths:
questionbank is the best resource you have. use it, love it, become best friends with it - especially if you’re in hl. ib hl questions are hard to come up with, so most teachers will take test questions from questionbank. even if they don’t, however, it’s good practice. hl is hard simply because they combine the topics you learn in ways you wouldn’t think of. practice, and you will be fine.
remember how to do basic math calculations. paper 1 of sl and hl don’t allow any calculators, so you really want to remember how to do 2 by 2 digit multiplication and division etc.
having a formula booklet on a test or exam is great only if you know what to do with the formulas you’re given
get to know your formula booklet because it could save you some brain space not memorizing formulas
masterposts:
math!
+ more
math ain’t got nothing on you babes good luck x dev
