Kyler Murray #1?
With the 2019 NFL draft approaching, rumors and speculation start to become more intensified with the decision the Arizona Cardinals have to make with the number one overall pick in this years selection. But is it really as intense as new head coach Kliff Kingsbury has indicated? I don’t think so. Here’s why:
Last year, Arizona sent the No. 15 pick, a 3rd-round pick (No. 79) and a fifth-round selection (No. 152) to the Oakland Raiders for the 10th overall pick and would go on to choose Josh Rosen, the young studded QB from UCLA, just months after losing Bruce Arians and Carson Palmer to retirement. Let me reiterate that, they traded UP to select the former Bruin to be their franchise leader. General manager Steve Keim even told Rosen in the war room “ the future is all about you my man” and followed it up by agreeing with Rosen when he said “ I promise, I swear to god we’re gonna go win some Super Bowls”
Now fast forward about 8 months, and quite a lot much changed. The cardinals front office decided to move on from head coach Steve Wilks and brought in highly touted head coach from Texas Tech, Kliff Kingsbury. Kingsbury, previously before he was under consideration for any NFL jobs, stated in an interview his appeal to the current Texas A&M Quarterback, Kyler Murray. Kingsbury went on to say “if I had the number one overall pick, I would draft Kyler Murray.” Funny how things change. Now, he has his chance to select his draft rights, but now the question remains, will he? We won’t find out until draft night, technically. Maybe though, just maybe we need to remind ourselves not to overthink this.
When you not only select a first round QB, but you trade UP to select said QB, that usually means you have a lot of faith in that player to take your franchise by storm and lead it to the promise land. It’s hard to imagine that after just one season in Arizona, Rosen’s time is coming to an end. Let’s be fair, you put Tom Brady in Arizona for that 2018 season, and I’m sure he would do a little better than Rosen, but he still doesn’t take them to the playoffs. The 2018 Arizona Cardinals.. well they weren’t good at scoring more points in a football game than the other team they were playing. And it happened a lot. So much that it lead them to the first overall pick in the coming 2019 NFL draft.
The Kyler Murray to Arizona rumors are just that.. rumors! Nick Bosa is most likely the name you will hear after Rodger Goodell takes his first stroll to the podium come draft night. The Ohio State defensive edge rusher can become the next JJ Watt as long as he can stay healthy. Arizona has a big decision to make before April 25th. I mean, seriously, what should Kliff Kingsbury do? Tell everyone exactly who he’s taking? Of course he’s trying to throw a wrench into everyone’s draft plans. It happens every year, and with Nick Bosa the unanimous first overall selection for any NFL team, things couldn’t have worked out any better for the smoke screen created by head coach Kliff Kingsbury.
