Social Class & Inequality (Field Work 11)
Theorist & Theory: Max Weber’s (Social Stratification)
Article Link:http://www.shareyouressays.com/knowledge/max-webers-theory-of-social-stratification-explained/112552
Brief Summary: In summary, Max Weber’s theory of social stratification identifies the three types of classes. These types of classes in which he identifies are property class, acquisition class and social class. Despite the identification of three classes only two of the three classes are analysed further on the bias of ‘’privileged.’’ With that being said, there are a plethora of roles that privileged bias has played in our society today. For example, in today’s society we ‘’minorities’’  are often judged as a whole based on other’s past wrongdoings. As we all know not too long ago blacks and other minorities were being pulled over and often gun down by law enforcement. In reality, we knew our rights and often obeyed the law enforcement orders that were given to us.In contrast, not all victims listened and as videos showed they often ‘’resisted’’ arrest. Nevertheless, this began a crazy chain reaction and began to make people realize that they had to give their kids ‘’the talk’’  where they explain how not to get beaten or shot by police when they inevitably get pulled over or “stopped and frisked.” In comparison, in our society when you are considered ‘’privileged’’ you often don’t have to worry about giving your kids ‘’that talk.’’
Theorist & Theory: Pierre Bourdieu (Cultural Capital)
Article Link:https://www.sciencedirect.com/topics/computer-science/pierre-bourdieu
Brief Summary: In summary Pierre Bourdieu’s theory of cultural capital distinguishes between the three forms of cultural capital:embodied, objectified, and institutionalized. With that being said, the theory that stood out to me was embodied cultural capital. Reason being, is because embodied cultural capital refers to one's tastes, ways of speaking and carrying oneself, and general knowledge of the culture valued by the dominant classes. In my honest opinion, I believe people’s value and self respect for themselves has decreased in today’s society. For example, mortality has drastically disappeared from our society. Nevertheless, people only gave more respect to honest and/or educated people but now only the powerful get the respect. Not only is it that money was important but how it was earned was equally important. People with dubious wealth never got any respect in public life. A blind race to earn money by any means has now started and it has led to increased corruption in the society. Everyone is busy making money; doctors, educationists, schools, hospitals, politicians, bureaucrats and even common man. Schools and hospitals have become money-spinning machines. Food adulteration is rampant and to save some money, industries have taken short cuts for waste disposals. This is an impact of urbanization. Urban society doesn’t make you feel that you are part of a system; you are just one of thousands of people living in that township and that leaves increased isolation and hatred.
Theorist & Theory: Karl Marx (Social Hierarchy)
Article Link: https://www.hierarchystructure.com/marxist-social-hierarchy/
Brief Summary: In summary Karl Marx’s theory of social hierarchy describes the social hierarchy that exists between different classes of people and also helps one understand how a person’s social class has an obvious influence on the life chances and experiences.Karl Marx also went onto say that one’s social class had an impact on his social life. With that being said, I believe that people who come from a lower-class background have to depend more on other people. For example, being an immigrant coming to America my siblings and I had to realize if you don’t have resources and education, you really adapt to the environment. In today’s society we are worried about the wrong things such as how much money you have. It’s also the clothes you wear, the music you like, the school you go to. All of this has a strong influence on how you interact with your peers. Social class is way more than that though in my opinion and People from lower classes have fundamentally different ways of thinking about the world than people in upper classes. In contrast, Wealthier people don’t have to rely on each other as much. This causes differences that show up in the social classes. In conclusion, the ability to rise in class is the great promise of the American Dream and is also every lower and middle class people goal.

Kinship & Family Fieldwork 10
To begin with, I would like to think that my immediate family is larger than others. As illustrated above I have three brothers and two sisters. I know it sounds like a ton for a man to have with one lady. Although, it could be true but that wasn’t the case for my siblings and I. You can say growing up in Africa was interesting for my father. Some may say he was a ‘’lady’s man.’’ With that being said, my older siblings and I all have different moms. My younger brother is the only sibling of mine to have shared the same mom and dad with me. So this is where the story gets very interesting, my dad’s father had 36 kids. As for my mom, her father did not have that many kids. Unfortunately, I never got the chance of meeting neither of my grandfathers. Reason being, is because my dad father passed away before I was born and my mom’s father left her life when she was really young. Being born and raised in another country and coming to America is very difficult transition. For example, being from Africa both my parents family left them at very early stages of their lives and they were left to raise themselves. I could only imagine how hard and stressful it was for them having to be on their own to feed and take care of themselves. They both eventually overcame it all and decided to come to America after having me in 1998. During my birth it was a really crazy and traumatic war going on in Liberia. For that reason, I was born in Accra, Ghana which was the neighboring country to Liberia in West Africa. My father was the first one to come to America in 1999 and one year later he had brought my mom and I to America in 2000. Before my dad could even come to America most of his family was already in the U.S. We had all lived in a really huge house in Trenton, NJ but that drastically started to change as my dad and his siblings started to not get along. This lead to his family becoming very dysfunctional and people moving out to different states. Some family members ended up moving to states such as; Georgia, Ohio, Nevada, California, Virginia and the list goes on. Nevertheless, you can say I have family all over the country. When my cousins and I were younger we always wondered why the family was so dysfunctional but as we got older we started to realize that a lot of it had to do with jealously, wealth and power. The older I had gotten the more questions I had for my dad because it was hard not being able to see my cousins. Keep in mind that most of my cousins from my dad side was in the same age range as me. Every time I would ask him, he would tell me ‘’ my family don’t like me and they envy me.’’ I would always think so ‘’why wouldn’t he want to fix stuff with his siblings?’’ Admittedly, that my dad could be selfish himself may have also been a reason on why he didn’t want to fix stuff with them. When my dad went back to college to get his masters degree and not any of his siblings congratulated but yet asked ‘’why would he want to even go back to school’’, what is he trying to prove?’’ That’s when I realize my dad was right about his sibling envying/jealous of him and only caring about themselves. It’s hard knowing that I wouldn’t of been able to see my cousins unless we get older and decide to see each other on our own time and also that that it never be a family reunion or barbecue.  Whenever we would try to plan a family reunion someone will always mess it up or have a crazy theory about why we shouldn’t have it. In conclusion, jealously and hatred is a very evil thing especially towards your own family and it keeps the ones that love each other away from each other.

Sex, Gender, and Sexuality
Fieldwork Assignment - Chapter 8
As a parent have you ever been concern about the commercials and ads that are shown on your child or children Saturday morning cartoons? Well, you should have a little concern if you don’t and if you do then you should look more into why it may not be so appropriate. To begin with, after watching Saturday morning cartoons and looking at the different commercials and ads; I was a little surprise at the messages they were portraying. Cartoons advertisements tend to usually effect children the ages of 5-11 years of age. Reason being, is because children between only have a partial understanding of selling intent. It is not until at least the age of 11 that a child is able to fully understand the selling intent of televised advertisements. Barbie doll commercials was aimed for girls. These commercials was taught cultural expectations to girls. The Barbie advertisers message to their audience is that barbies are (and is) thin, “beautiful,” sociable, affluent, and heterosexual, reflecting conventional American notions of femininity. With this being said, the commercials invite girl viewers to think of themselves as Barbie. In reality, very few children in real life look much like Barbie.Commercials that was targeted for boy audiences was video game commercials. For example, I came across a very old Nintendo Game Boy commercial. It didn’t take me long to realize that this commercial was mainly targeted for boys. The difference between male and female targeted audiences is that male-targeted advertisements contain more elements emphasizing action, competition, destruction, and control over others. Whereas female-targeted ads contain limited activity, expression of feelings, and nurturing behaviors. The advertisers are trying to express that men denote power, control, and dominance. Women are left to be lacking intelligence, and helpless. For every one female character shown as an authority figure, there are male authority figures. This significant difference shows the extent to which gender stereotypes are perpetuated in children’s media. Male and female characters are also associated with different types of products. Bold colored toys, action figures, and vehicles are typical “boys only” toys whereas pastel colored toys, dolls, jewelry, and domestic-oriented toys were typified as “girls only”. In conclusion, the presence of advertising to children isn’t the problem. The problem is the absence of competing messages about gender behavior and values concerning sex roles. Stereotypes can lead to oversimplified conceptions and incorrect evaluations of gender behavior. These perceptions can restrict life opportunities, particularly for women, as well as reduce dignity, create body dissatisfaction, and impede social interactions. It is important to note, however, that advertising does not reflect the significant advancement of the gender equality movement in our society. To counteract, stereotyped representations of gender roles in advertising. The responsibility to promote equality between boys and girls falls on the shoulders of parents.

Tumblr media
1) Unjustified Discrimination
My media illustrates the concept of unjustified discrimination. Reason being, is because it illustrates the discrimination that shapes the LGBTQ community. For example, some people in the LGBTQ community may find it harder with being fired from a job. Even though that may be the case, they may find that sometimes they are passed over when it comes to certain opportunities.
Tumblr media
2) Individual Racism
My media illustrates the concept of individual racism. Individual racism from my perspective is when a person says, “I’m not racist,” what he or she usually means is that they do not consciously believe or think that whites are superior. In fact, she may take great pains to prevent such thoughts. While avoiding racist thoughts is a good start, this approach assumes that racism only occurs in the conscious mind. In reality, racism can be conscious or unconscious.
Tumblr media
3) Institutional Racism
My media illustrates the concept of institutional racism. Institutional racism from my perspective is when a institution making choices that intentionally single out or harm people of color. For example, many churches has been subjected to have institutional discrimination. With that being said, many church have not only apologized for alienating minority groups such as blacks but have also attempted to make their churches more diverse and appoint people of color in key roles.
Tumblr media
4) Cultural Racism
My media illustrates the concept of cultural racism. Cultural racism from my perspective is when an authority creates and defines the culture in a society. For example, in America; the standards of art, beauty, and other forms of culture have historically been decided by straight, white, Christian men. As a result, the dominant American culture often reflects the needs of that group while excluding or devaluing the contributions of people of color. Therefore,  the holidays we celebrate, the statues in our parks, the stories in our history books and other markers of culture generally honor white men to the exclusion of other groups.
Tumblr media
5) Structural Racism
My media illustrates the concept of structural racism. Structural racism from my perspective is a type of racism that codifies individual, cultural, and other types of racism in perpetual systems. For example, many organizations establish an early career pipeline programs to new recruits and diverse professionals. Despite this commitment to diversity, some program’s requirements may limit the number of diverse applicants. With that being said, a program may require a college degree and letters of recommendation from faculty members. Even though, a college education may seem like a standard qualification, requiring a college degree for non-specialized positions inadvertently disadvantages people of color.  Institutional practices such as school segregation prevented people of color from attending college for years.
Tumblr media
6) Apologetic Racism or Apologetic Racist
My media illustrates the concept of apologetic racism. Apologetic racism or racist from my perspective is a type of racism or racist that are blatantly racist and will blatantly do something like use the n-word or discriminate against employees for instance, and think that a simple “I’m sorry” will make it all better. Much like the Not All White People Racist, Apologetic Racists love to guilt trip and gaslight. They think it’s the responsibility of people of color to educate them and forgive them every time they make a misstep, rather than taking the initiative to do better on their own.

Flexible accumulation;
This is an example of flexible accumulation because it’s showing how us as people mess up the earth by always throwing waste around and populating the earth. For example, we often tend to liter and not realize that we are messing up the earth.
