1) Who is Ivan Susanin and what is he known for?

At the beginning of the seventeenth century, during the Time of Troubles, there was a Polish-Swedish intervention. Ivan Susanin is a hero, a peasant from the village of Domnino (now in the Susaninsky district of the Kostroma region), famous for saving Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich from the Polish-Lithuanian detachment during the Russian-Polish war. According to the royal charter of 1619, in the late winter of 1613, Tsar Mikhail Romanov, already named by the Zemsky Sobor, and his mother, nun Marfa, "were in Kostroma." Knowing this, the Polish-Lithuanian detachment tried to find a way to the village in order to capture the young Romanov. Not far from Domnin, they met the patrimonial headman Ivan Susanin and "tortured from him" the whereabouts of Tsar Mikhail Fedorovich. Susanin was tortured, but did not give away the place of refuge of the tsar and was tortured to death by Poles and Lithuanians.

2)The memory of the feat is perpetuated and not forgotten. In 1835, by decree Nicholas I Central square Kostroma was renamed from Yekaterinoslavskaya to Susaninskaya. Ivan Susanin is depicted in the same way on The monument "1000th anniversary of Russia" in Veliky Novgorod (1862).
