Day6 As: Artistic Movements

Hello everyone~ This is the first of (hopefully) many posts I hope to make on this account. I had this idea while thinking of how to kick off my writing, and I feel in immediate and passionate love with it. I hope you enjoy!

Romanticism

Romanticism was a movement that started in Europe toward the end of the 18th century, and took place across art, literature, music, and intellectual movements. It was characterized by its emphasis on individualism and emotion, glorification of nature and all the past, and preferring the medieval rather than the classical. It was partly a reaction to all components of modernity at the time (scientific rationalization of nature, Industrial Revolution, aristocratic social and political norms of the Age of Enlightenment, etc.), and had an impact on many fields outside of the arts, including politics.

I chose Romanticism for Sungjin because of its emphasis on emotion as a source of experience. Sungjin has the ability to express so many powerful emotions through the way he sings, and he pours everything he has into his music. He uses music as a catalyst for new emotional experiences, and seems to encourage sublimity through what he does and who he is. He’s sweet and expressive, and he seems to be the kind of person to experience anything and everything he can.

Impressionism

Impressionism is an art movement from the 19th-century, and one everyone is familiar with. It’s characterized by small, thin, yet visible brush strokes, as well as emphasis on accurate depiction of light and its changing qualities, open composition, unusual visual angles, etc etc. Point is, Impressionism has a lot of fine detail. It uses movement as a crucial element of human experience, and accentuates passage of time and its effects. The name of the movement comes from the title of a Claude Monet painting, titled Impression, soleil levant, which caused a critic by the name of Louis Leroy to coin the term in a (satirical) review published in a Parisian newspaper. So, why Jae?

While researching a bunch of art movements for this, I saw Impression, soleil levant and instantly thought of Jae. Impression, soleil levant means Impression, Sunrise (which is just a fun coincidence). Something about it just struck me as Jae. The whole Impressionist movement was characterized by tiny but visible brush strokes, and I think it suits Jae really well. Jae seems like the kind of person to project a certain image, but underneath it’s a whole mix of colour and shape and style. Every aspect of him comes together to create this perfect, beautiful image that I can’t help but love.

Fauvism

Fauvism is the style of les Fauves (“the wild beasts” in French), a group of modern artists from the early twentieth-century. The works of Fauvism favoured painterly qualities and strong, bright colours over the realistic values of its predecessor, Impressionism. The Fauvist movement didn’t last long (1905-1908), but it produced some pretty cool paintings (Henri Matisse, anyone?).

Young K reminds me of Fauvism because of his very bright, colourful personality. As a person, Young K seems to view everything through an artist’s eye. He’s grounded in reality, but when nothing’s holding him back he makes beautiful, colourful expressions of himself and the world around him.

WONPIL as…

Rococo

For Wonpil, I focused less on the architectural side of Rococo and more on the paintings, but the architecture definitely reminds me of him. Rococo painting originated in early 18th century Paris, and is characterized by curvy lines and soft colours, usually depicting scenes of love, nature, amorous encounters (fancy talk for sex), youth, and light-hearted entertainment. The word “rococo” comes from French rocaille, which means rubble or rock. Rocaille refers to the mixture of rock, seashells, and plasters used to decorate the gardens of grottoes and is used for the patterns seen in the decorative arts of the Rococo period.

The soft lines and soft colours of Rococo art are what really reminded me of Wonpil, as well as the common scenes of love and light-hearted entertainment. Wonpil, to me, is a very soft and loving person who’s just here to have a good time. It’s so easy to smile when you’re around him, and Rococo art gives me the same light, friendly feeling Wonpil does. It’s soft and subtle in all the right places, but also very elaborate and decorative. The Swing by Jean-Honoré Fragonard has a very distinct feeling to it, one I can only describe as beautiful and delicate and free, and oh so Wonpil.

DOWOON as…

Expressionism

Expressionism was a modernist movement that originated in Germany in the beginning of the 20th century. It presented the world from a solely subjective perspective, radically distorting it for an emotional effect to provoke moods or ideas. Artists expressed the meaning of emotional experience rather than a physical reality. It was developed as an avant-garde style before WWI, and remained popular in the Weimar Republic. The style of Expressionism spread to a wide variety or artistic mediums, including architecture, literature, painting, film, music, and dance, and is sometimes suggestive on angst.

Oh, where to begin for our dear Dowoon. Truthfully, it was really hard to find an artistic movement for Dowoon. I kept going back and forth and erasing and restarting before I finally settled on Expressionism. Why did I choose Expressionism? That’s…  hard to answer. I think, truthfully, it’s because Expressionist artists sought to express emotional experience, not emotional reality. Dowoon may not seem like it, but I feel that he’s always thinking of others. How are they feeling, what can I do for them? kind of thinking. He expresses himself in a particular way on the drums, and he’s so incredibly passionate about what he does. To be able to capture and express that love and passion the way he does, to put it into music and taking care of himself and the people around him… it’s one incredibly emotional experience indeed. And it’s something he evokes in me every day.

day6 as winter olympians

sungjin: biathlon. prefers mass start because while he’s a good skier he’s a great shooter. get to the range at the same time as him? you won’t be leaving at the same time. it takes seriously strong crosswinds to make him miss a single of his twenty shots on a bad day. has a little bear charm dangling from his rifle. but for all he uses a gun, he’s a big advocate for gun control, and takes to social media a lot to call attention to the disparity between america and other countries: he just cares a lot.

jae: downhill skiiing. a need for speed. trips over his skis while trying to leave the waiting area after his time is announced. how the hell does he manage to ski at high speeds down a steep hill with all these turns when he can’t walk twenty feet? who knows. pulls a chloe kim and tweets between his runs, constantly asking fans to buy him food. once was asked why he likes downhill and he said “gotta go fast” and dabbed and walked away. never sees an end to sonic memes after that.

youngk: hockey. hockey. i will never be over hockey captain brian. started skating young, considered figure skating for a while until he scored his first goal and never looked back. went to canada to train for a while, ended up playing a few years in the nhl, but went back to korea not too long after; he just likes his home country better. brian? with bruised knuckles and a cut on his cheek, sweaty and tired but cheering on his team? sign me the fuck up. runs training camps for underprivileged kids to get into skating sports like hockey, runs campaigns t raise money to get equipment for kids lacking the money to seriously pursue a sports career.

wonpil: figure skating. think shoma uno: tiny, but with the power to do quads and the beauty and grace of skating to carry even programs done to opera. cantilevers™. does aegyo in the kiss and cry, gets thrown stuffed alaskan malamutes because of one offhand comment. he keeps one stuffed animal from every competition and uses the rest as training incentives for kids at his rink or donates them to children’s hospitals. works at the same camps as brian but for figure skating. every single kid has a crush on him. every single everyone has or has had a crush on him if they know that figure skating is a thing that exists.

dowoon: skeleton. got into the sport a little late, but loves the freedom of throwing yourself headfirst down a steep icy track with nothing but your own skill to keep you from getting into a nasty crash. definitely has a superhero helmet or five. immediately becomes the nation’s heartthrob when he takes his helmet off and That face is what appears. constantly in some state of confusion, just wants to sleep. not really a fan of the whole talking-to-the-media part of being one of the best in the world, but wins even more hearts when he’s shy and awkward. helps out with training camps specifically centered around giving older kids a chance to start to learn a sport they don’t have any experience in with no judgment or embarrassment.
